I'm due for an upgrade soon and am thinking of either the Omnia or a blackberry. Now it appears that the blackberry is suppose to be good with email and all that, but I never used one before. Anyone here who use one or perhaps an alternative to blackberry but still do that same thing? Thanks.

It's great for email, crap as a web browser.

^^^^

I just got one for work, another bloody thing to carry around.

Useful for email though yeah... which is the main point of it :p

I have the 8800 works really well and is easy to type emails. I find the web browser more than adequate I have to say. GPRS works well too surprisingly quick.

Another BlackBerry user here, all paid for by the orifice :D

I'm highly impressed with it. Great for email as others have said. The battery life leaves any other device I've ever used for dead, if you use the email/SMS features but don't voice call much I am sure you could go 6 or 7 days without needing to recharge. Always seems to get good signal. Agreed that the browser leaves something to be desired though. SatNav is very good, used it in London the other day.

Dunno which carrier you are with, but you will probably need to pay an extra charge if you go the route of a BlackBerry, i.e. a normal phone tariff plus a data bundle.

I should add that I also use an HTC TyTNII as my own personal mobile. Email also good on that, though the BlackBerry is better. Syncs to Outlook easily. Battery life is terrible. The touch screen and interface is slightly laggy compared to the iPhone IMO. In fact, I am generally uninspired by WM6, which is a great shame as the TyTNII is a nifty bit of kit.

Mine is only for email and as you say I can go for a good week without charging it. The sat nav isn't brill IMO, but useful to get you to a street you don't know in town for example, all it does is download the maps in real time.

Precisely Will, wouldn't want the SatNav if I was lost in the Sierra Nevada, but it got me round Putney without too much bother :p

Oh thank you guys. I just want one as my love for gadget is slightly unhealthy! I very much doubt it will be used for work, but mainly for checking my mails every now and then.

Didnt you buy an ultra-portable eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeePC in order to have access to email on the move?

Much better off with something like a Touch Dual for that I would say.

Yes, BlackBerry is overkill if you aren't a heavy e-mail user.

I do and still have the Asus 1000h, however changes in work environment, requires me to have a phone that can allow me access to internet and mail while working. [Lab environment]

If you need email access while working then surely your employer should provide it to you?

I have learnt to keep work email and my email apart you see. Yes there are computer rooms I can use, but it will be better for several reasons imo to have something on my phone I can use solely for mine;)

Im sure that if your work is getting in the way of your social life then your employer would be happy to arrange for you to have more free time....

This post contradicts your last statement, work does not require you to have a phone that allows you internet access whilst working at all - you've just said you have computer access.

you shouldn't really have personal things in a lab environment that you'll just use in an out of the labs anyways.

And I agree with ChumpyChops that unless you're given the freedom (which obviously by wanting a separate device you aren't) to check your personal emails at work then you shouldn't be doing it.

I know for sure that in my labs we're not allowed to take/use any personal things within the labs unless we're going to alcohol clean them when taking them out or leave them in the labs, but I guess we're more concerned about contamination than the NHS ;)

Okay Sidewinderinc:rolleyes:. Here let me make things clear, my work situation is changing and I will no longer have access to emails and forums etc during my working periods, expect at break times. Hence why I said I am not allowed my notebook with me in the lab, however a few people do use mobile phones and do check things every now and then, which so far do not appear to be an issue.

This is a thread about me wanting a blackberry or a similar device and hearing what people have to say about it, especially those who have used it, own it or have experience of it. It is not a thread for people to tell me what I can have and what I cannot have you see. In other words, thank you for nothing really.

Agree with visage chumpychops all you want, it wont stop me to get it when the time for my upgrade comes. :)

Holy Potatoes, you'll actually have to work whilst at work?! Who'da thunk it?!

iPhone or HTC Touch thingy.

Holy Jebus, another useless post from Sidewinder. Gosh dude, you are a child and need to grow up. Explaining things to you is pointless. Do you not have spelling mistakes to pick on, or names to call and insult to throw....oh wait, this ain't >>that<< forum. Here, I will be the bigger man and wont bother with your drivel any more. :)

Dude, lighten up, and if you don't mind I'd like you to edit that post - I wasn't trying to wind you up and I think you've over reacted there slightly.

I did also suggest the iPhone, or the HTC Touch as I've had a fiddle with the internet on both of those and it works fantastically, moreso on the iPhone IMHO.

My sister has just got a blackberry and it seemed useless, cluttered and completely OTT for what she needed, and the browser was diabolical.

;D I stop buying fake things now you see. I buy cheap one instead, or the ones I can get for free. Speaking of Blackberry, they just launched a new all touch device that the media is touting already as the "iphone killer".

Looks good I think.

It will be available free on 18months contract.:(

Honestly I think the latest HTC devices are idea for your needs, full qwerty kbd good Outlook integration, good as a phone and for email and surfing and can be customised and have 100s of software applications added :)

Same as MB. HTC edges it over the iPhone for email for me (especially the HTC models with a real keyboard), and the Blackberry really is primarily a business tool.

Calling anything an 'iphone killer' is the sort of thing El Reg does for sport. It has no meaning in reality - all phones have their good and bad - just some have a lot more of one or the other.

Feek
08-10-2008, 18:34
Yeah, a few devices have been called "iPhone killers" already and none of them fit the description.

Personally I think a Blackberry is overkill for home email. As a business tool it's essential for me and I'd not be without my 8310 but for my home mail, no thanks. I'd rather use my iPhone which is also great for many other things.

I said in my first post in this thread that the Blackberry has a crap browser, that's been repeated by others in here and I don't know anyone at work who has a BB who would describe it as any good.

In the end, it's your call.

Thanks guys, I am actually taking on board what most have said about the browser. The HTC touch - the one mat is talking about - can be had for free with t-mobile so yeah it is an option for me.

If you are getting a windows mobile device, the first thing I'd suggest if you want to do browsing is forget about pocket IE and get yourself a copy of opera mobile (not mini), especially play with the current 9.5 beta, best browser on a mobile device, seriously.

Mark
08-10-2008, 19:08
Very impressed with the 9.5 beta - it's light years ahead of the previous attempt, but you needn't worry about that with the HTC devices (at least not some of them) - which come with Opera as standard.
