After watching the lastest developer diary I've decided to start a thread where we can talk about it. I'll add links to the videos as I find them :)

Every Gun Has A Story (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/40092.html)

Delta Blues (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/40401.html)

Enter the Horde
(http://www.gametrailers.com/player/40653.html)
Never Fight Alone (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41131.html)

Top 5 Deadliest Locusts (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/40848.html)

From the looks of it the MP has been improved alot which is great. Sadly there is no more rolling shotgun killing (Colin you can rejoice ;D) but there is some great maps on the way. If you watch the Never Fight Alone video you'll see a map called avalanche which looks to have an excellent game mechanic where you guessed it an avalanche blasts through the town killing anyone not in a building or in the back of a truck ;)

One of the biggies for me with the game as a whole is the fact the kill achievements have been changed so you don't have to play just the ranked MP matches to get them the are spread across the campaign, etc.

NokkonWud

Being able to get the kills in Co-Op, local and ranked MP is a massive plus for me.

Being able to get the kills in Co-Op, local and ranked MP is a massive plus for me.

Definitely.

I saw my local gamestation is still advertising the pre-order deal with the model and cog tag, so think i'll have to enquire there another day :) Need to check who my pre-order is with currently and if the price difference is much.

leowyatt
09-10-2008, 19:23
That is the deal I have Jen :)

Haly
09-10-2008, 19:26
Seems it's only £3 more than my current pre-order with game so think I'll get that sorted when I'm there next :) I like getting pre-order stuff :D

Siaus22
09-10-2008, 21:12
Hmmm, may have to go in tomorrow and pre-order with that deal. Have already made sure I have most of that day free to be able to enjoy the game in its finest.

Since learning of the horde mode (aka TK Frenzy \0/) I shall be picking this up. No decent highstreet stores near me though :(

Probably get it from work (-10% :p)

Daz

I really want some cogs. Is the gamestation preorder an exclusive thing, in-store?

leowyatt

I think so matey yes it is only instore as I couldn't find it online.

leowyatt
10-10-2008, 11:13
  Just rang and confirmed my pre-order and I should be getting splatter head and cog tags but they want 50 quid for it  Didn't realise I was buying the fricking special edition ;D

Haly
10-10-2008, 11:18
Do you have to put a deposit down for it? Been years since I pre-ordered at a shop so don't know :o

leowyatt
10-10-2008, 11:20
I didn't have to put a deposit down no :) You need to make sure they have allocation as Bootle where I'm getting mine from don't have any more heads and stuff left, but the guy said I should be fine for my bits and bobs :)

Haly
10-10-2008, 11:23
Cool :)
My local one never sells out of anything usually so fingers crossed they're fine. When I bought Gears 1, everywhere in Swansea had sold out (which is quite rare anyhow!) but this place in Llanelli had loads of new copies and even pre-owned copies ;D
I'll have to pop in Sunday I think :)

leowyatt
10-10-2008, 11:25
cool, well it'll be good for you to get the stuff :D this will be the first time I've pre-ordered something and got goodies ;D

EDIT: Just spoke to them and seems I've pre-ordered the special edition, only wanted the game ;D

Davey_Pitch
10-10-2008, 12:59
I'm not pre-ordering this :( Simply can't afford it if I want to get Fable 2 when it comes out (which I do). It's only 3 weeks after this that it's my birthday so I'll hopefully pick it up then along with Fallout 3.

NokkonWud
10-10-2008, 13:27
Oh, ShopTo.net have knocked some money off the Fallout 3 Collectors Edition. £6 to be precise, now making it £49 as opposed to the £55 it was.

Don't worry, we'll still be playing it then :D

Any chance you could swing it on a rental?? Might be worth a pop ;)

Davey_Pitch

Daz
10-10-2008, 15:00
Really looking forward to getting a Horde team together and then pairing off to nail the campaign :) Though I may well end up doing what I did last time - do normal on my tod and pair up to go through insane... we'll see :)

This will probably be the first thing to really give my speakers a workout too

NokkonWud
10-10-2008, 15:02
Well I'll 100% definitely be getting it.

leowyatt
10-10-2008, 15:06
Horde is going to be intense :)

You never know Davey you might get it the day it's out, I struck gold with Bioshock the other year from Swap Game :)

Haly
10-10-2008, 15:07
I've never played through Gears 1 by myself, always in co-op so I'll probably do the same with this :)

Daz
10-10-2008, 15:08
I still think it's a shame they have no 4 player co-op campaign. It would fit better in this than Halo - there are actually 4 squad members, not just 3 random Elites who appear to fill the roll ;D

leowyatt
10-10-2008, 15:09
It was ok on my own but co-op was a right laugh with both you Jen and Daz :D

I'll probably do it solo so I know what is going on, it'll be interesting to see if they have separate achievements for each difficulty or if they stack. Infact I'm off to find out.....

EDIT: Daz Gears 3 will have 4 player co-op, I'd put good money on it.

leowyatt
16-10-2008, 11:26
MP hands on (http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/920/920013p1.html) with IGN, this game is going to rock :) Who is up for Horde then? You might need to put an entire evening aside to attempt it.

Davey_Pitch
16-10-2008, 12:18
Yup, count me in for Horde :)

Also, who's up for co-op through Hardcore from the off? I fancy going into the (near) deep end right off the bat :D

Daz
16-10-2008, 12:21
If it's an available option (it wasn't in Gears 1) count me in for sure :)

In for Horde too :D I dont think we'll ever complete it, by the sounds of it she'll require a massive investment of effort, something only students could muster ;D

leowyatt
16-10-2008, 12:38
I'm game for co-op if people are up for it. We'll need to split into pairs but will be a right laugh.

Horde will be awesome, infact most of the MP will be too!

Haly
16-10-2008, 15:33
If it's an available option (it wasn't in Gears 1) count me in for sure :)

Hardcore was available iirc, it was Insane that had to be unlocked :)

I'm up for co-op and horde. Should be a great laugh :D
Who wants to be my partner then?

leowyatt
16-10-2008, 15:36
That is right Jen, insane was unlocked after hardcore. Seems again the difficulty achievements don't stack so we're going to have to go through them all, oh well ;D

I'm easy fnar!!! ;D

Daz
16-10-2008, 16:59
The difficulty achievements stacked in Gears 1 :) I never went through on Hardcore but have the achievements!

leowyatt
16-10-2008, 18:15

NokkonWud
16-10-2008, 18:31
Is it 4-player co-op or something?

leowyatt
16-10-2008, 18:32
No it is 2 player co-op. There is a larger co-op game called Horde but sadly the main game is still only 2 :'(

I've pre-ordered the limited edition on Zavvi for £39 which is the cheapest now that Amazon jacked up their prices. I've not used them before though, so fingers crossed it arrives when it should.

Streeteh
18-10-2008, 21:09
I've only heard good things about zavvi, you should be safe. Wonder if there's any truth to the 'this won't be released on the PC, but this time we mean it!' cliffyB comment? Will be interesting to see how that pans out as they said the same thing about gears 1, if it doesn't get released i'll end up purchasing a 360 for this and NG2.

You know, I was thinking of pre-ordering something else before Gears to test the waters, but I don't have the time at the moment to buy anything else! In fact I'm studying for a certification and my target is to not buy any games and pass by the 7th of November so I can play Gears. Except I'm on here and not studying!

I've done the same. Also getting Banjo from them for £35 and now with the free arcade title :)

The game has been leaked and some people are playing it at this LAN. Not had a go yet, but have been watching it and I must say it's absolutely jawdroppingly fantasticly amazingly beautiful. Looking at it it's hard to believe they have improved it so much, sharper, more on screen, it's incredible.

No one will be disappointed with the visuals of it which blows Gears of War (1) out of the water.

Davey_Pitch
24-10-2008, 23:20
That's impressive, considering Gears 1 is still one of the best looking games of all time. New leader of the pack, graphically do you think?

Absolutely. I'm slack-jawed. Nothing comes close to this, I don't care if you're talking about Stalker or Crysis or anything on the horizon, I've not seen anything that looks as good as that. The visual stylization of it is brilliant, as GoW was. This just takes what GoW had and multiplies it.

*headshot* ... Anyway... The screenshots I've seen of it, and my bad memory, do make me think that its a clear step up over GOW1. Some of the views look amazing. Reminds me a bit of Halo 3 where you stop and look out to the distance. Fantastic scenery. I just hope that theres no General Ramm style ending as that really annoyed me.

I've not pre-ordered this for 2 reasons:

1) I'm planning to pick up a new 360 later this year (hope to get a Jasper revision) so will probably get that at the same time either as part of a bundle and/or haggle the price down by picking up a few new releases at the same time.
2) All my pre-orders are usually placed with vouchers/codes/cashback to get the best pre-order price at the time BUT more recently games have been cheaper to pickup either on release or within a week.

I've still not completed many of GoW 1 achievements (Co-op, Hardcore/Insane etc.) either :(

Haly

I've cancelled my pre-order for the LE now. Decided I'd rather go round some supermarkets on the Friday and get the normal version for less. There's just been too many good supermarket deals lately to do it any other way really. :)

Zico
26-10-2008, 15:20
Well I've ended up pre-ordering the standard edition through Amazon seeing as I had £22.50 worth of vouchers to use, £36.97 - £22.50 = £14.47 plus 1 day delivery with the one month Primetime trial.

I also ordered a new DAB/FM radio alarm clock at the same time so I've paid full price for one or the other.

Nice price there Zico. I currently have the LE ordered from gamestation but think I'll just do what I have done with Fable 2 and go buy it from the cheapest supermarket. I'm hoping beyong hope that Sainsburys stick it on offer again ;)

Talking to Nokkon the other day a group of players completed all the levels on Horde and it took them 6 1/2 hours

Its got to the point now that it's hardly worth pre-ordering unless you have got some great codes. One store or another seems to be doing a new game for £30 or sometimes less on launch weekends.

I got gears for £32 using a 7.50 off voucher that came with my quaterly club card statement. Then minus quidco of course :)

I only pre-order now if I can get games around that price.

NokkonWud
26-10-2008, 21:24
Aye, I've noticed that online isn't what it used to be. ShopTo are giving money off vouchers with everything now.

Streeteh
27-10-2008, 09:17
Supermarkets have realized if they sell things like games for a pittance (sometimes even at a loss!) people will tend to do their food shopping while they're there, often netting more of a profit per person in one shopping outing than any games store could get. This is why Sainsburys were practically giving 360s + Wiis away, they were actually making a loss on their console sales, unfortunately that all backfired when Game managers bought nearly all of their units to 'pad out their stock'.

Eurogamer review (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=281039)

Like the original, on one level, Gears 2 is a brilliant advertisement for Unreal Engine 3, glorying in soft-body physics, glinting textures, and massive explosions. Even after a year of non-stop eye candy, Epic's series provides some of the most fiercely pretty visuals you'll get the chance to look at, even if its world is so charmingly ugly. Yet on another level, the game's a calling card from a developer that continues to mature in design as well as technology. The first game slowed down the crazy pace of Unreal Tournament - forcing you into using the environment every bit as much as the weapon-set - and the sequel continues to build on that with ease, but alongside the bare mechanics, Gears of War 2 shows a new interest in stories and varying the action. Best of all, it has the native intelligence to bring both aspects together.

9/10

NokkonWud
03-11-2008, 16:20
Thought Eurogamer would have given a 10/10 to be honest. Pretty shocked really.

Daz
03-11-2008, 16:23
I expected a 9, simply because it's more evolution than revolution. The Trouble in Paradise to the original Viva Pinata. Fable II and Fallout 3 are (as I read it) so much more than their predecessors, whereas this one will be largely the same fundamental game but expanded well.

NokkonWud
03-11-2008, 16:37
But shouldn't games be reviewed on their own merits. Now, this might not be the case, but I'd expect Gears of War 2 to be a better game than Fable 2. If you're reviewing a game in comparison to its predecessor then the scores actually begin to mean very little.

Psymonkee

But shouldn't games be reviewed on their own merits. Now, this might not be the case, but I'd expect Gears of War 2 to be a better game than Fable 2. If you're reviewing a game in comparison to its predecessor then the scores actually begin to mean very little.
In terms of comparing to predecessors, they serve as useful yardsticks imo. In terms of comparing to Fable, they're different genre's, and aren't directly comparable. If you took the 2 best examples of games in their genres, your opinion on which is better is based on which genre you prefer to play.

Eurogamer gave the original Gears (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=70109&page=3) 8/10 (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=69696&page=2). This is more of the same, done better, and got a higher score, which is about right. I think the extra point to Fable and Fallout are justified if they did indeed revolutionise, or define those franchises.

It's obviously down to the reviewer/review site. I read a lot of Eurogamer and 9 is what I expected based on how they've reviewed previously :)

Davey_Pitch

IGN US gave Gears a 9.5 (they gave Fallout 9.6), and IGN UK gave it 9.2. Not read the reviews yet though, it'll give me something to do if I'm in work tomorrow.

I hate scoring games, it's such a minefield.
If I had my way, no review site would ever use a score out of 10 :p

leowyatt

I don't care what the reviews say I'm stoked for this game and getting it regardless ;D

Belmit

I always thought a score out of 20 was the way to go. 10 is too restrictive and inevitably gets split into tenths, in which case you might as well use a percentage.. but then out of 100 is too picky. Should I buy one game over another because it scored 95% compared to 94%? And how do you qualify that 1%?

Give it a score out of 20 and you can at least eliminate splitting points in half.

NokkonWud
04-11-2008, 14:03
20 would be a good one, though Edge have always used 10 and have given out that perfect 10/10 around 8 times in their history (sadly though they gave it to Halo 3 and Half-Life 2, neither of which are 10's).

I quite like EGM's school rating system (A+/B-/D+ etc..) as it's a change. Alternately, I was always a massive fan of CVG's old school 'High-Five' system.

Haly
04-11-2008, 14:07
Edge are pretty good with their scoring most of the time. They seem to appreciate that 5/10 isn't a crap game, it's an average game. While far too many other places and people see 7/10 as average and anything lower than that as crap.
I don't think I've ever played a game that deserves 10/10 though, to me that would be suggesting it couldn't be faulted which imo doesn't exist.

NokkonWud
04-11-2008, 20:51
10 out of 10 only means 'approaching perfect' when you break itdown into percentages when you discount that 0/10 isn't possible.

Haly
04-11-2008, 20:55
I'm assuming you mean if a game got 95-99% it would get 10/10 because it's rounded up?
It still doesn't sit comfortably with me, and believe me, I've had enough arguments over the point of a scoring system in the past :p I'm extremely glad that my latest reviewing spot doesn't require scores. Nothing more annoying than getting a comment about how the score was wrong and how it should have been a whole 4% more  Try reading the review instead of staring at the score ffs!

As 0% or 0/10 isn't a plausible score, then it would have to work like:

1-10% = 1/10
11-20% = 2/10
21-30% = 3/10
31-40% = 4/10
41-50% = 5/10
51-60% = 6/10
61-70% = 7/10
71-80% = 8/10
81-90% = 9/10
91-100% = 10/10

Playing on Hardcore, everything fine until the first vehicle section; it's right at the very start of the damn game.

I just can't kill the very first reaver on the left with the chain gun. It always over heats and I always die. Tried 15 times now, just can't figure it out.

Sorry Psymonkee, it kinda started straight away and my god once started an hour flew by. So intense we couldn't take our eyes off it.

We got to wave 20 and thanks for the game :)

Friends request sent now though :)

Quick question for guys with the LE and the code for the golden lancer, if you enter it can you still pick the normal lancer as well as the golden or does it replace the standard one? I don't want to enter the code if it replaces the normal one.

Horde was good fun :D
Also reached Act 3 in the campaign and enjoyed Act 2 much more than Act 1.

Added you to my friends list Windle :)

Had some awesome multiplayer games tonight with the OcUK Crew. Hail is an awesome map. The hail kills you if you get caught in it.

I was going to say there's a list somewhere, but guessing you mean you can't remember which one you haven't done? :D
I've only done half of them or so, have to mop it up at some point.

Yeah, wasn't keeping track of what I'd done until I hit about 8 done, then decided I wanted to know what they were.

I really like how the game keeps track of things like Seriously 2.0 and other achievements that involve doing something a number of times. Makes you feel like you're gradually getting somewhere :D
Admittedly I'm only at 500 odd with Seriously 2.0 after half way through the game, but it's nice to see anyhow.

Aye was gonna mention that too :)

Now I wish other games did it :(
