I had a new windscreen fitted earlier this week and it's filthy dirty inside. I don't mind windscreens when they get a constant layer of grime on them but a dirty smeared drip-run screen annoys me.

What's a good product to use to get a nice sparkly clean finish inside? I know there are many cleaning things about on the market but one can't beat recommendations from friends.

So, car driving buddies, what's good to get my screen clean?

I just use regular household window cleaner stuff - the Windolene spray stuff seems to do a pretty good job on mine.

Didn't the fitter clean it after they installed it? Always do when I've had one done.

I use glass cleaner I bought from my local screen place.

Trust me on this. Go to a good dealership and purchase their foaming window cleaner in an aerosol can. Both GM and Chrysler have unbeatable stuff. It's all I'll use. Everything else is like water in comparison. I haven't tried anything from any other companies, but both FOMOCO and MOPAR produce excellent stuff.

Meguairs Glass Cleaner is the only off the shelf solution I've tried. No real complaints. Infact it reflects too much dashboard....

That foam stuff sounds interesting though.

Top tip: Get rid of streaks by doing the final polish with some scrunched up newspaper. Worked on our coffee table :)

Leon used Autoglym Car Glass Polish on the inside of my windscreen on Saturday and it's come up lovely.... until a bird shat on the outside

don't use anything, get a microfibre glass cloth ( e-cloth ) , wet a corner and wipe dirt off then wipe over with dry bit , clean windscreen in under a minute with no smears

I use rain-x foaming glass cleaner. Works well, streak free. I only tried it as it was on a special deal when I bought the rain repellent.

I fail to understand why people would pay through the nose for glass cleaner for cars when the household products are just as effective but a damn sight cheaper.

I had a look on Halfords website and found the following:
Halfords Advanced glass cleaner - £5.99 for 500ml = £1.20/100ml
Turtlewax glass cleaner - £5.99 for 500ml = £1.20/100ml
Carplan Eco glass cleaner - £3.99 for 500ml = £0.80/100ml
Meguiars NXT generation glass cleaner - £7.99 for 710ml = £1.20/100ml

Whereas, at Tesco you can get:
Windolene glass cleaner - £1.07 for 500ml = £0.21/100ml

I find it impossible to believe that any of the "car" glass cleaners are so superior to one of the top brand name household glass cleaners that they warrant a minimum of quadruple the price and typically, 6 times the price.

I challenge anyone to clean half their windscreen with the overpriced "car" product and the other half with Windolene and tell me that they can honestly notice the difference.

This is the stuff I use:

Was about £3. Not overly worried about the price as one can lasts for years! Very very little needed each time. I think one thing the pro glass cleaner is better for than windowlene etc. is removal of sticky marks that you often get on a new piece of glass, but for general daily cleaning etc. I agree entirely.

Stan, there's one problem with your line of thinking : Household glass cleaners are used for cleaning glass.

When it comes to cleaning car windscreens, there's one small problem : The inside layer is plastic. Hence why when the windscreen breaks you don't get showered in glass. So when you buy automotive glass cleaner, you're actually buying a cleaner for plexiglass and other forms of transparent plastic.

Doesn't alter the fact that my household glass cleaner cleans my car windows perfectly well for a fraction of the price :)

I thought it was 2 layers of glass with the plastic binder in the middle?
