View Full Version : People you work with.

So some of this may just be a rant by me, but recently I seem to be coming more and more frustrated with some of the people I work with.

Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few decent people in the office and get on really well with them, but recently a few people seem to be hell bent on just winding me up. Finding it increasingly harder not to just let go and end up in full blown shouting at them.

Now I'm all for having a laugh and joke and a bit of a skive as is pretty much most of us in the office, what really hacks me off tho, is those people who just pee around all day long, complain they are bored, sit on the phone to everyone bar work related stuff and then moan when asked if they have actually done anything today or are given even the smallest amount of work.

I like a good laugh but know when I have a shed load of stuff to get done, it gets done. Just don't appreciate people trying tog et all shirty and moaning at me about giving them stuff to do, stuff that needs doing and then sitting on the phone to an estate agent and looking for houses!

Argh,... rant over. Anyone else have to deal with people who really grind on you?

And Lainey....... you know who I mean but names need to be left out :lipsrsealed:. MB possibly also knows who I mean.

Yeah, I was in one of those moods and really needed to get it all out right now or I would have just been stewing about it for a while!

People in support have been immensely irritating at times. They get this impression that sysadmin are the 'instant fix' for every problem, so if it requires even half a seconds creative, intelligent thinking, like maybe reasoning out the cause of a situation rather than dumbly typing in the same old commands, bang up comes the ticket to our queue. Then when it took me a week or two to get around to it because for some daft reason for a while I was the only sysadmin and I had too much work just doing fire-fighting, they bitch and moan that tickets are taking too long. For a good long period of time I would sit and write careful responses, detailing my steps, hoping they'd pay attention to what I'd done and how I'd worked out and resolved the problem. A good 75% of cases were ones they should have fixed themselves. Of that 75% probably a further 75% of them were dead simple and should have been completely obvious from even a quickest glance.

e.g.
"Customer is reporting their e-mails keep bouncing to these destinations", followed by headers containing all the bounces.
30 seconds skimming through the headers and its plain to see they'd typo'd the e-mail address. 20 seconds later I've even bothered to do a quick DNS check (something support do hundreds of times a day) to see if the typo'd address has a mail server, and it doesn't.

Gee.. let me think now. Why might e-mails be bouncing then?

What hacks me off, is the people that do jack all, all day, and then expect somebody else to help them out because they've got too much to do.

Also the people that do nothing all day, and then do all their work on overtime, thus screwing with the overtime budget and getting it cut, so those people that are swamped can't actually do any overtime because there's no budget for it.

I also hate those people that expect you to be mind readers when they need help, and then moan that you haven't done something for them, when they didn't even bloody ask, or remind you if they asked the day before.

See thats one of the things that happens, or they moan they have so much to do then bugger off for a gossip for a few hours! See I like a gossip, as Lainey will testify but I won't then expect someone to bail me out. I get the work done. As we don't have an overtime budget I can't really comment on that but know friends who have similar situations at their work.

Grrr. I work all sorts of odd hours and sometimes slack off during the day and have to catch up 'after hours', but I wouldn't dream of claiming more than the hours actually worked. Not that we can claim overtime anyway but that's not the point. My work habits probably annoy people sometimes when they have to wait for stuff, but the work gets done and sometimes the odd hours pay off, so my boss is fine with it.

SidewinderINC
13-10-2008, 18:52
See I have no problem with that mark, as you're not on overtime if you're just working odd hours. but if you're paid from 9-5 and don't do anything between those hours and then work till 8pm and claim those 3 hours on top of your regular pay then I want to attack you with sharp objects.

Lainey being the lovely lady? Not heard those words together for a while :P hehe just kidding nerd!

I'm up for a meet to meet new people! Although when I've been to meets with other boards, the established memebers have to provide the drinks for the newer members! ;-)

You can speak in person with your rant then!

The people I worked with at my last work were the most boring uninspiring bunch of dullards I've ever come across. Leaving them behind has done me nothing but a great favour :D

Current workmates are a mix of people who should be kept away from the public and some who should just be locked up. Definitely shouldn't be allowed to have anything to do with what goes on our TV :D

We have some phone shy people in our office too... we also have some people who are afraid of talking to teenagers, which is concerning when you're a service for 13 - 19 year olds!

She just is lazy... if a consultant calls up and its easier to go down and help them - I do.. she doesn't.

Sometimes (like this week because I have had a really bad throat) I screen all my calls - fwd to voicemail and call the important ones who leave VM's back. ;)

See that one is the most worrying part in our job. And seems to be quite common. What are they going to do? Eat you!

And BB - least you have a reason to screen the calls, yet your still making an effort to work.

Not sure the kids were really appreciating my coughing today tho!

I'm trying to work out who is currently looking for a new house at the CAP:dunno: Olivia has left :D

There are a lot of people who work there that shouldn't its a very odd place, one or two should have be encouraged to leave when they went over to Connexions from the Careers Service but as the management is pretty much non existant most people have lost the skill of looking busy is let alone being busy ;D

there's a guy at work who just seems to be the most irritating person in the world. constantly smacking his lips when he eats, he doesn't shut up and seems to have no idea of how to interact with people; like some sort of social autist.

I'm having a bit of a tough time putting up with work atm and the people are driving me mad. I mean I get on with my team in general but on a standard day, let's take today for example...

N - cancels our meeting 10 mins before the start and reschedules for a day I'm not in.

Boy L - goes off on 1 because he needed to standardise his email sig (just like the rest of us) which I wrote the code for so all he had to do was copy and paste.

Girl L - disappears every 10 minutes all day and when she is there complains Karl isn't dealing with the stuff she's given him... her work, not his I might add.

M - wants praise, constantly, even though he's not doing half of what he should be.

E - ok, he's not been with us that long but he's not learning. He is really willing but has to ask about everything, even if you gave him the same answer 2 minutes earlier.

And today was a good day

I have this problem where I work really really hard, so work have started to take advantage of this, and pile work onto me :( The other lady in accounts has children so doesn't work full time, and does the bare minimum so I usually end up finishing her jobs as well as mine. She complains if she has to do any of my work from time to time though :(

I have decided when I go back next week I'm not going to work at full 100% capacity. I have an excuse not to anyway so I'm not going to wear myself out :/

E - ok, he's not been with us that long but he's not learning. He is really willing but has to ask about everything, even if you gave him the same answer 2 minutes earlier.

We've got one like that. I've talked him through investigating and solving all sorts of problems, step by step, explaining everything in detail and he seems to understand it all. You can even quiz him on points and he'll answer it successfully. 5 minutes later a similar (or even the same) question will come up and you have to start from scratch again.
I went out of my way to help him, even seriously hampered some of my work because of the amount of time I spent one week explaining stuff to him, and it was all wasted time. Gave up in the end and just started asking him to escalate anything he didn't have a clue about because it was quicker to do it myself than keep explaining it to him.

Garp he's so sweet and he is trying so so hard, but it doesn't stop it getting frustrating does it? :( It might be a confidence thing with E when he's put on the spot, but he's only dealing with the very simple stuff... what's going to happen when I have to leave him going solo or when he gets to the real work?

Our guy is too. Offered to pay for lunch towards the end of the week when I went all out to help him, all sorts.. it's just. Well.. yeah. What more can you do?
I don't like doing the cruel to be kind routine, but it got to be the only way I could deal with him and remain sane, let alone get any of my own work done.

Ok me again.... so I am organising a Team Building conference which is next thursday... it consists of Venue hire, hire of rooms x6 dinners, evening entertainment and treasure hunt the next day.

So two weeks ago they tried to cancel the whole thing... I told them it would cost them £10k to cancel and £18k to do so they are going ahead.

So basically I negotiated some money off some rooms that we were apparently too late in cancelling.

Now they saw they want to keep the evening entertainment and ditch the treasure hunt.

Am getting fed up of messing people around and asking them to cancel/deduct things from their costs... at the end of the day 'I' am the one who has to work with the contacts and it doesn't create a brilliant atmosphere.

Honestly... PO today!
