View Full Version : Your latest music discovery?
Not who can say they've heard of a band/group/DJ etc first but something you've discovered, old or new. My friend has been giving me some amazing recommendations over the past couple of years and all he does is things like look at 'People who bought this also bought....' on Amazon and Play. I did something similar by typing in some genre names into a search engine and found Ulrich Schnauss, his stuff is simply beautiful. Have a listen to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6py9h8GPLz4) if you're feeling stressed.
So what have you discovered lately? And more importantly, how?

When i was 15 a friend gave me Portishead - Dummy for my birthday, at this point in my life i wasn't really into music so it just ended up in a drawer somewhere, unused and unloved for nearly 9 years. A fortnight ago i found it again still in its shrink wrap, i opened it and stuck it on random, the first track it played was 'Roads' and i've been in love with the album ever since.

That's another fantastic one i recently unearthed (about a month ago?), i knew they did the song at the end of the remake of Vanilla Sky and i really like it but didn't bother looking into them. Then i saw the prince of persia trailer, the music in that was utterly captivating, after some googling i found out it was them again so figured i simply had to buy a couple of their albums. Not regretting it one bit.
My brother introduced me to Regina Spektor recently, and Joanna Newsom. Liking their stuff a lot right now :)

Which albums did you get?
I strongly recommend Heim as an introduction although Takk is my favorite album

I would say eve6, matchbox 20 and powderfinger are some of my better finds. I used to spend a lot of time listening to net radio during their request sessions...... radio wazee, channel X and [xrm] alternative on shoutcast. Think they are still going so would be worth having a listen.

I have Takk as that has the prince of persia song on it, the other one however just shows up as 'Unknown' in iTunes, unfortunately i left the disk at home (living in a student flat so limited for space) and i've forgotten the title due to crazy Icelandic wordage so can't figure out which album it actually is, it's the one with the Vanilla Sky song on it (Njosnavelin).
[EDIT] I stopped being lazy and went to find it in my purchase history, it's classes as Unknown because the album seems to not have a name, it's ()
[EDIT2] Also, thanks for the recommendation, unfortunately my student loan has been delayed so i'm a little broke though Heim has been put at no1 on my albums to buy list.
[EDIT3] (man i'm doing well tonight)
powderfinger

The Guitarist/Singer is only 14!!
I personally think they're a new band doing Sebastian Bach/Skid Row style metal really well.

The Cinematic Orchestra - came upon this lot when I saw top gear episode 2 of season 11 and wanted to know what the music was when jeremy was in the cafe looking at the clk black edition. So off I went to http://forums.finalgear.com/top-gear-episode-songs/ to have a look and the song turned out to be "to build a home" so I had a listen and then bought the album it came from and was really impressed by it.
It's not my usual heavy metal but it's nice to be mellow, and "to build a home" is now my current favourite tune :)

Faultline
Not a new discover but a CD which lies dormant in my collection and then resurfaces on a regular basis.

I finally got the Enter Shikari album last month after seeing them live in the Summer.
The CD isn't a patch on hearing them live but if you like your tunes on the heavy side it's well worth a listen.
