View Full Version : Poker Set!
Where can we find a cheap but goodish poker set (300 - 500 chips?)
We've been trying to find some 11.5g chips and have found a couple on fleabay... found a couple like this: 300 chip set (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/300-Poker-Chip-Set-11-5g-Number-Chips-New-In-Stock_W0QQitemZ220296838002QQcmdZViewItem?hash=ite m220296838002&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A2|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14) ... is that good?
We don't play lots - probably once a month with a few friends over. But it would be nice to have a semi decent set as opposed to a small diddy one (which can cope with 4 of us but no more!) :)
Any ideas of where to go!? Or do any of you lot have dusty sets lying around which you don't want anymore and are looking for a sale ;)
something like that would be fine 11g is pretty standard
I would go for something without numbers or with more appropriate numbers, poker tournaments traditionally start with 25/50 blinds so a good set of chips would be 25/100/500/1000
would also invest in some decent cards, we use Kems, normal cards used to last 1 night, one of our set of Kems have probably been used in over 100 games and are still perfect
I have this set but prob a bit much for what you need ;)

oh and you need one of these too :p

Got any idea where we can pick up a decent set Grandad?!
:)
*edit* lol! Just went to the amazon linky! Our poker nights are generally drunken with some friends and playing for pennies (if not playing for a bed and the rest have to sleep on the floor!) Although I would *LOVE* a proper poker set like yours... I think a "cheapy" £10 - £15 will suffice for now :D
I have some decent cards kicking around from where I used to do magic tricks. They have taken a good buffeting and are still alive so card wise I think we're fine :)
Picks somewhat excited though at the thought of Big Blind and Small Blind tabs as well as a Dealer chips ;D He also got excited the chips were in a wee briefcase! lol! Bless him!
Annoyed as Toys r Us did a goodish deluxe 500 chip set for £14.99... but they're out of stock! Bar stewards!
at the lower end they are all much of a muchness, well there are some sold all over the place in a tin and they are dire
try these

will have a look around and see what I can find

!
dissapoint him and tell him that no one actually uses those ;)
got a small game tonight and then a bigger one down the pub tomorrow, prob about £750 in prize money though is more of a social/drunk game
*wubs woo* :D
lol £750 drunken social game!
I think the ones we play in probably surmount to about £20 in total, lots of cocktails, lots of pick bits and boxes of cheap plonk (ie Liebfraubmilch!)
A little bit more casual than your games methinks! Perhaps in the foochure when we actually become semi ok at playing we may venture into a social event such as yours! But for now, I can't help but to crack up at any hand I have :D I have no poker face!!!
(Despite this I seem to win a lot... Maybe my plying guests with drinks and cocktails pays off ;D)
had a quick look and the one I linked above is as good as any, well it appears to be but in reality is best to handle them to assess quality, oo er :p

Superb we'll stick to some fleabay type ones :D
Would love to have a couple of nights playing poker with the likes of you mister!! I think you could teach me a thing or two!! ;) :D
Will have to set up a proper night for the new year - bit too skint at the moment and only able to afford this due to a tax rebate! Huzzah! But indeed, when we do arrange one you must come play!
sounds like you have fun, I'm not that bothered re the stakes/prizes but do tend to play slightly higher buy in games as the standard of play is obviously better and makes for a better game
there's a game in Nottingham next month with an estimated £250,000 prize pool

would be great to get folks together for a game :)
Off on a little tangent, can either of you recommend a decent 'learn to play poker' website that doesnt involve piles of money?
most have "pretend money" ones
pokerstars, full tilt, partypoker
generally change the .com to .net for the free version
the problem is that people tend to play stupidly as they can just reload their chips, small stakes real money games tend to be a better proposition, partypoker have really small stakes ( 10p or less ) single table tournaments and you will learn more playing these
I've only ever played strip poker :o
Is that where the "hold'em" came from?

As Grandad said - freebies on the tinterweb aren't brilliant because people just go silly and bet all the time. If played right Poker can take FOREVER and a day but it's better that way :)
Have a bish bash bosh online though and see how you get on. I personally would say going to a friends house and playing poker with them would be the best way to learn though as you can always show your cards afterwards and they can explain whether your moves were good etc and explain their motifs too :)
I'll give you a game :D
We recently taught a couple to play and they love it. If you're like me and like playing all sorts of cards and aren't too bad with figures you should pick it up pretty quickly! :)

I used to live with three blokes and we frequently played poker (normally after a night out and it always ended up strip poker). I learned to play to win pretty darn quickly ;) (I also learned how to do dodgy shuffles well too ;))

You don't have to get the full table like Rotty has there, but Andrew and I had the table top which was perfect and looked soooo good :D No where near the price and was a lot of fun!
Only once or twice did I do a dodgy shuffle I'll have you know! And that was to get other people in trouble and not to save my own removal of clothes (I was being mean :p ;D)
I only use slight of hand now when doing magic tricks :p

We drag in our dodgy wobbly legged old plastic garden table and cover it with a cheapo black cloth ;D ;D
Grandads table ROCKS! And not in the way our wibbley one does ;D

"Oh no it seems you've lost and now need to remove all your clothes" :p I know your plan missy ;)

Best place is to play at meets. It's what I do and whilst I don't know all the rules and best plays, I still have a bit of fun :D

Same here although it's been a while. It's good fun :)

last time I played at a meet I was robbed :p But yeah it's a reet laugh and the only way I play poker. Once every couple of months 4 of us get together and play for a pot of like £20 and it is great. I don't trust myself to play online :o

of course, a decent table top will set you back £50-60 , one like the one in my garage is a serious bit of kit and will cost £700+
won tonights game, only £110 but better than a kick in the nads :p
played a "round of each" tourney
hold em, omaha, 7 card stud, RRP and Irish
great fun :)

You're not the only one :) I think I know a fair bit about poker but Rotty could definitely teach me a few things :)

/me smiles knowingly
I wants me some of them actually
*goes looking*
well that didn't go as planned
2hrs in and I am up from 10k to about 15k
77 in BB
aggressive player raises from early position, I re raise, he calls
flop 6 8 T
he checks, I bet 2k , he calls
turn 9 , he goes all in
I think it's Christmas and call
he turns AJ :D
and rivers a Q for bigger straight :(
Only just seen this. I've got an unused set here - only 200 chips though and I've no idea what the weight is. Probably cost as much for me to post it as it would be to buy new though. :(
Got it for a good reason at the time but that didn't happen and due to being on my own I had no reason to open it.
