View Full Version : Fallout 3
It wasn't really on purpose :p
Game had the best deal on Arcades, and the only game they had on offer that I didn't already own was Fallout 3 and it just happened to be their collector's one :D
And no to your next point ;D
You know my stumpy leg? :o
Well... :o
Erm... :o
It's not stumpy. I just thought it was. It's just how the little fella looks (being the outline of him running you cannot see the bottom of his left foot).
So I'm not stumpy at all. I'm just dumb :o :o :p
Picky couldn't stop laughing at me :(

I like it :D The painting on it is pretty detailed too.

My bobble head is my favourite item to come with a LE/CE of a game. I bounce it all the time and have done several times daily.

I don't have a camera :(.
Ta da... 1000/1000 and all done.
Put in just under 50 hours and to be honest by the time I finished I'd had enough.
It's a great game but unremorsefully barren and depressing. I also felt there was an overuse of subways to seperate areas which became unnecassarily complicated at times. If I hadn't used t'internet to find the final few areas to get the all the dolls and super mutants I'd have certainly missed some.
I'd certainly recommend it but for me all magic came in the first 30 hours or so and the final quarter I was more driven to finish than to see more of the world.

Git :p I really wish I'd done what you did and got all the karma achievements in one play through. I won't mind going through it again in 6 months or something, but it would have been nice to do it all at once.
I agree with you about the subways, far too many of them and far too easy to go in the wrong one and end up in completely the wrong direction. Of course it's realistic that everywhere would be destroyed and routes would be blocked off, but realistic isn't always fun. They could have at least improved the guide on your map to make it easier to get where you wanted to go.
Pics of the bobble head?
Just popping out but I'll try & get one up later.
Bet it's satisfying 1k Fallout 3 :) Looks like there's more to do to 1k it than Oblivion.

Absolutely. With Oblivion it's just a matter of time, with Fallout there's a bit more to it than that :)

If you want to get the full 1k in one playthrough, best speak to Abooie about advice, as you get achievements for reaching certain levels with different kinds of Karma. It would usually require 3 playthroughs but can be done in 1 go if you want to.

Arse, why did they have to announce DLC so soon after I got rid of my copy. I knew they'd do it, but never thought it would be as quick as this. May have to pick it up again in the Jan sales if it's cheap anywhere, as just reading about it makes me want to go through the game again.

My excuse is we're both off on mat/paternity leave so I'm getting the chance to game a little during the day.
My mrs goes back after Christmas though so I'll soon be back to a slower pace.
I'm not sure about dlc atm, I loved the game but I think I've spend enough time in the world.
I might pick the game and dlc cheap some time in next year, we'll have to see.
I was wondering how long it was going to take to get them to give us access to the sdk for mods, should be interesting to see what the community comes up with. Also, the DLC should give me a kick up the arse to load it up again. That's if Bethesda make it 64bit compatible.
I've still not really touched this yet :o At this rate, I'll have it completed by the time the DLC comes out ;D

One thing I will say about achievements is they have pushed me to finish more games than I probably have done at any other time in my gaming life. I also know how bad I am at getting back into games. For example I'm still kidding myself I'll have another run through of Too Human and holding onto it but if I'm honest I probably won't.
Where did you get up to in LO? Much further to go?

I'm right near the end ;D
But I wanted to do the Temple of Enlightenment before finishing and my save file is somewhere in the middle of that and I'm too idle to get on with it :p
I will do though, just have to be in the right frame of mind as I don't want to rush through the end of such a good game.
Been trying to get into this the last couple of days and it's just not capturing my imagination yet. I'm only about 4hrs in so hoping it just needs more time to get exciting.
It's not that I don't like it, it's just not giving me that 'ooh just five minutes more' feeling. So I feel a bit like I'm going through the motions :/
On a technical note, bit disappointed by the lack of a decent physics engine, sure I can kick along a tyre for example, but walking through swings does sod all! Only a minor gripe but something I noticed that seemed a bit silly.
NokkonWud

Physics was the biggest flaw in Oblivion too :(. (aside from the graphics - which are stunning in Fallout 3).
I found it hard to get into at first, partly I think because I was comparing it too much to Fallout 1+2.
It does start off really slow, even after you get out of the vault, but does pick up once you find a few more locations.
On a side note, I did have my first real "oh f***" moment on Friday.
I was on my way towards Fort Banister when I came across a Super Mutant by some train cars, took him out easily and went in to loot everything. Get down the bottom of the hill and see a red mark show up on the radar behind me, turn round to see a Behemouth come flying at me. What made it worse was that I'd left my Fat Man & Missile launcher at home as I was on a looting run, cue loads of back peddling, stimpacks & swear words but the sod went down. :D
I heard you can get this for £20 but where from?

If you haven't made the Dart Gun yet, get to it. It will cripple the legs of any two legged enemy, making them stumble and limp towards you. Makes things like Behemoths and Deathclaws piss easy as they simply can't get near you :)

I bought this off Steam a couple of days ago after being tempted for a long time to get it but I has hesitated a lot. Oh my, what an awesome title. Oboibliboibin with guns baby!
I am leveling up too fast though because of that 'Swift Learner' perk, despite the fact that all I do is explore and do the odd quest. So far I hit Level 12 last night and I have yet to do the first step of my main mission, which is find galaxy radio station.

How do you get the swift learner perk? Ive been playing it for ages and i feel chronically underpowered and im only level 7 or 8.
I'm currently playing this through a second time as an EVIL charactor :). Its taken some getting used to as I always want to do nice things, but I cant allow that to happen this time! :)
Its great - I've found loads of places I never found the first play through - the capitol wasteland is HUGE!
Going for 100% this time too (in terms of achivement).
How do you get the swift learner perk? Ive been playing it for ages and i feel chronically underpowered and im only level 7 or 8.
Upon leveling up the first screen you're given to input points into is your Skills screen. The next screen is the Perks screen and its somewhere in there. The perk adds 10% XP to your kills or something and has about 3 ranks. Downsides are that you level at a much quicker rate, which isn't a good thing as there are only 20 levels max apparently.
I just found out 10mins ago that the PC version has achievements, which can tie into your 360 account - if you sign in on the pc via games for windows, which I haven't done :(
/me facepalms
Can you do that via Steam? Thought that had its own achievement system?
How much of a 'hardcore' RPG is Fallout 3?
For example, I tried Morrowind and it bored me nearly to suicide and when I tried KOTOR I nearly ate my own legs out of boredom.
Is this more of the same?
Can you do that via Steam? Thought that had its own achievement system?
It does, and Valve games afaik have their own achievements linked to your Steam account. I thought PC Fallout used the Steam achievements system. However Windows for Live games like Fallout 2 can be linked to your 360 account via Games for Windows that is installed with PC Fallout
I use the 360 controller to play PC Fallout and when I hit the globe button, a GFW box appears asking me to sign into GFW or create a new account. I always ignored it thinking pc acheivements were separate from 360 ones....doh :o
I have a couple of GfW games myself, just didnt think the system worked via Steam. Figued they'd use the Steam system, good to know otherwise though :)

Hey! I really liked Two Worlds and can't wait for Two Worlds: The Temptation :) I would have got 1000/1000 but 70 points were glitched and not achievable until well after I'd sold it and moved on.
Not sure if I can justify buying it again just for this though. I might wait until all the dlc is out in a year or so and discounted, rent the game and do it all then.

Absolutely loved Operation Anchorage. Very well produced, some nice touches (no Stimpaks, you have to find Health units ala Half Life) and some cool enemies (the Dragoons).
A few hours of additional gameplay, if for me it was worth it, if you love Fallout 3 it very much feels the same.
Only downside is that you have to do all 4 quests back to back as you're in a simulator, where-as I would have liked to go between them at my discretion.
I also enjoyed Operation Anchorage. Completed it in about 5 - 7 hours. Took a break from my evil character and returned to my good character to play though it first, although as that character is at level 20 already and just about to complete the last mission, I havent got the benefit of the extra weapons / armour you get.... never mind!
Two more achievements then I've 100%ed fallout 3 until the next two dlcs... which I shall more than likely be getting...

I don't understand why the extra weaponry and armour can't be used anyway? well obv it can, but ive completed the game with that char, so cant really get much enjoyment from adapting the gameplay using new kit to tackle a range of quests. If you want to be good at killing, make sure your perception is pretty high (I think I put mine at 8), and just make sure you increase your Small Guns attribute as much as you can at each level. You'll obviously forego some other skills by doing this, but having a very high rating in Small Guns will allow you to inflict much more damage on enemies while they're still far away, ideal for any enemy or creature who has to get close to you to hurt you.
Feel free to put some points into Heavy Weapons as well if you like. The weaponry and ammo was more scarce, but believe me, you'll thank me when you come up against a Behemoth and you're carrying a Fat Man Nuke launcher :D
Thanks :) Not sure what my points are in at the moment as I've been playing in drips and drabs for a while.
Anywhere where I can find some decent equipment or does it not really work like that?
Davey_Pitch
03-03-2009, 12:46
It doesn't really work like that. You'll generally find most of the better weapons near the start of the game, but they'll be in poor condition and without too much ammo. As you put more points into your repair skill (highly recommended) you can repair weapons by using another of the same type for spare parts. Repairing the weapon obviously makes it last longer, and also increases the damage it does.
One place I found to be quite good for ammo and weapons was a school north of Megaton. If you haven't got it on your map yet, go into Megaton and talk to the girl in the general shop who wants you to do the Wasteland Survival Guide. One of her tasks is to go and find some mines from a minefield. I left Megaton and started walking towards it and I basically walked straight into it. There were plenty of Raiders in there who were full of weaponry, ammo and armour to pilfer, after "convincing" them to give it to me :D
Yeah I've been there and done most of the quest line now :)
Thanks though :D I'll check my repair skill later.

There are several unique weapons you can find scattered throughout the game world which are well worth trying to track down as they're often much more powerful than the standard weapons and can be repaired using the relevant weapons. I can't remember where they all are now but if you check on x360a I'm sure they'll have a thread about it :)
I'm waiting for this to get much cheaper as i'm still hugely dubious as to whether I would like it.

It seems to be a bit of a marmite game really, some people like me absolutely love it, others seem to hate it without too many people in the middle. I hate to say that if you enjoyed Oblivion that you'll enjoy Fallout 3, as they're not the same style of game, but I think if you hated Oblivion that perhaps Fallout 3 isn't for you as they do share a lot of the same traits (open world exploration, lots of character interaction, side quests). I prefer the post-apocalyptic wasteland to Oblivion's world though.
Well everyone in the world except me seem to love it so read into that what you will ;D
Everyone in the world seemed to love Morrowind and KOTOR but I hated both. Yet I loved Guild Wars...
I get bored with high levels of 'character management' as in spending half the game arranging your backpack to fit more stuff and things like that.
I loved KOTOR, wasn't keen on Morrowind. Oblivion was ok but didn't really amaze me hugely. I'm much more of a JRPG fan though and I know there's plenty of JRPGs that I adore but others would think were very average.
I think for most people, Davey's summed it up perfectly. :)

For good weapons, get the Terrible Shotgun from Evergreen Mills (there's also a Bobblehead there) by killing the bar keeper.
Other than that, buy Operation Anchorage, you get a really awesome rifle (Gauss Rifle) and some superb Armour. Alternately, you could go to Old Olney sewers (Very North East) and there's some concept armour that injects you with Med-X in battle and pre-warns you when enemies are near (meaning the Perception perks are less important - you can also eat Mentats to up your perception anyway).

Completed it just this minute, loved every single minute of it. What a fantastic experience that was. Going to go back and get the other Karma achievements at some point (soon), and obviously The Pitt and Broken Steel are two absolute musts.
Every location on the map discovered and visited (aside from the outer door of the inaccessible Vault 87). 76 hours, 44 minutes and 5 seconds was my final auto save time.
SiD the Turtle
18-03-2009, 13:34
Wow you visited everywhere in under 80 hours? I have about that on the clock and have barely visited half the locations.
Fantastic game, I will go back as an evil character soon to scoop up the missing achievements.
I was wondering about picking up the neutral ones as well in the same playthrough. Going from good to evil would be easy (walk into a town, slaughter everything, become evil, level up) but is there a nice easy way to become 'gooder' to move from evil to neutral?
NokkonWud
18-03-2009, 13:40
I think being good is a lot harder than being bad if you're trying to do it quickly. You're probably best doing what I am going to do, play the game through on Neutral, pick up the achievement, load the previous save, then slaughter everyone and get the karma for bad. Then re-load the neutral one and play on.
I already had older saves before level 20, so I've loaded one up and done it on bad already, got to do it on Neutral which I can do later, I'll do it before I start 'The Pitt', but some genius decided to delete his older saves for no reason.... now it means I really do have to play through from the start.
I took my time on my playthrough, did practically all the side missions, didn't use any form of guide and went through every speech choice and clocked in under 80 hours. My friend has about 4 main story quests to go and he's at 150-ish hours, but he has a tendency to go idle for a couple of hours at a time.
Also, nice to see you around SiD :).

I think being good is a lot harder than being bad if you're trying to do it quickly. You're probably best doing what I am going to do, play the game through on Neutral, pick up the achievement, load the previous save, then slaughter everyone and get the karma for bad. Then re-load the neutral one and play on.

I always play 'good'; I've tried playing evil but I just don't enjoy myself.
I 'exploited' the system like this to get 1000/1000 in one play through. The level before each achievement level I saved, ran back to town and killed people until I became neutral then leveled and got the achievement then did the same again for evil.
I don't think doing the opposite is really that feasible.
I played good first, now on second play through I'm being evil, but gettng neutral achievments by donating to churches before key level ups... seems to work fine!

Didn't know that. That's awesome :).
I've already started again, currently on Level 5 working towards Level 7 (Neutral and Bad) and Level 14 (Neutral and Bad), managed to quickly get the Scientific Pursuits achievement that glitched on me in the first run through using a guide for those of us who experienced the glitch, and also got the Neutral and Bad achievements for Level 20 (loaded old saves).

That's got it done. 1100/1100. Took 8.5 hours. :p
I'm level 18 at the moment on second play through - so next level up I can use the "here and now" perk to get 20 neutral and evil achievements... so nearly 100%ed it - until new DLC comes out of course!

Fallout 3 DLC: The Pitt
Out: Today
Anyone bought this yet? Much like Operation Anchorage, it's also 800 points, but less combat involved taking it back towards the roots of Fallout 3. I've already made sure I have enough points on my account for this, so it's currently downloading. I can't wait to play either :D.
The Pitt really wets my appetite and looks great. Really looking forward to your thoughts.
I'm going to have to beg a borrow of F3 from your good self (or anyone else!) to play this and Operation Anchorage :)
Ack... there may be trouble ahead....

edit.. just seen your tweet, how bad is it?
NokkonWud
24-03-2009, 13:55
Very bad. It's actually worse than any user mod I've used in the past.
There are missing models and textures (which results in the exclamation points being shown, of which there are many) and as soon as you get to the door before entering the downtown area of The Pitt (just after you have your weapons removed), as you press 'A' on the door to enter, it opens the loading screen then crashes, locking up the Xbox360.
I was just talking to Haly and said that there is no possible way Bethesda have tested the release because it's immediately noticeable as soon as you arrive at The Pitt due to the massive red marks and if you missed those, the locking up is a clear sign something is wrong. It's of course possible that Bethesda sent the wrong file in some ridiculous admin error, then that would make it Microsoft's fault.
Either way, massive problems.
We are continuing to look into the issues people are experiencing with The Pitt for Xbox 360. As of now it looks like the file for the English version on Xbox Live was somehow corrupted. We are currently working with Microsoft to remove the existing file off of Live to prevent any further downloads. Our plan is to replace it with a new file as soon as possible. We hope to have another update for you shortly.
And it's been pulled.
NokkonWud
24-03-2009, 17:55
I'm not sure how it can take long to swap files around. Surely Bethesda have a backup of the working file to swap the files around?
Certainly, but they'll be MS red tape to go through in the mean time. Plus just getting it into a CDN the size of the one Live uses isnt quick I'll bet.
woah. I war really looking forward to this. Gonna have to wait a while longer then! No probs!

It's gotta be a mix up. There's no way problems on that scale could pass through quality control.
Well so far from what I have played (PC), it is rather DULL. It has taken me about 20mins of play and I think I'm on the end portion already. The DLC visually looks superb, but it is just a combination of countless ramps, set in dark areas that make it a bit tiresome.
Not to mention that once again you are stripped of your weapons and armour before you enter the area ffs.
NokkonWud
24-03-2009, 22:37
You can't be at the end, surely? It's longer than Operation Anchorage in length and that's at least an hour.
Guess I'll find out when I get back from work tomorrow to continue. I've read no backrgound on the DLC so far so have no true idea about what features it actually has. All I know is I am making my way out of the Pitt from the looks of it.

Should be up today apparently.
Update:We have a team of people working with Bethesda on the availability of The Pitt and we will re-post an updated version on Xbox LIVE Marketplace as soon as possible. For anyone who purchased the initial version of The Pitt, you’ll need to delete the title from your storage device and re-download the final version once it’s available.

It's up. :D
DLC completion time = 40mins. I spent a further 20mins today on the main quest and that was it. It's very plain to play and well there isn't much to say. There are a few 'side' missions along the way but they're just very small fillers.

Very disappointing. I heard there was at least a couple of hours play time, of course much like Fallout 3, I'm sure there is more to it that you probably never discovered. It took me 80 hours to do Fallout 3 the first time, but I got to the stage I was at after 70 hours in less than 4 hours the second time.
I played Fallout 3 to the death and discovered almost 80% of the game as well as hitting the level cap and then finding GNR Radio station :p Hell it was my GOTY minutes into me playing it as I had been toying with the decision to buy it for months.
For the first time in a long time I am actually quite disappointed with this bit of content. I could be a bit harsh given that I actually don't like the general setting of the Pitts in the first place. Just wait till you see how 'hard' the trogs are :insert rolleyes.gif: Time to drown my sorrows by watching bl0ray hellboy 2 :p
For those who didn't know, I sold my copy of Fallout 3 then rebought the CE for £2 more :D Which was nice :)
It just arrived today, and admittedly I'm a little disappointed by the bobblehead.
It's cool but it feels sooooooo flimsy compared to the Brotherhood of Steel figurine I got with the Game LE. The lunchbox is very cool though so that's ok :D
Sold the awful Shellshock 2 so bought points to pay for the two DLCs, so that should keep me busy :D

Think its main flaw is it's a bit short and buggy. You're a bloody Fallout 3 addict though so you'll be happy I bet :p;D

Annoyingly despite all the excitement of having Fallout 3 again, I don't appear to have any time to play it today :( Was out all day and now I'm off out again in a bit with only about 20mins spare to play it, nooooooo.
And I'm working a fair bit of tomorrow too, boo.
Just completed the Pitt - and have consequently 100%ed the game :D
Now - I saw Fable 2 is cheap on play... hmmm...
NokkonWud

I'd recommend picking it up cheap. Whilst Fallout 3 is the better game, Fable 2 is quite funny and will definitely fill the gap between now and the next DLC, Broken Steel, quite well.

I started back on Fallout this weekend, first completing Operation: Anchorage, then starting a new game. It's amazing that after 80 hours or so that I'm still finding things I never saw the first time through (this time a house in Springvale with a junkie ex-hooker in it). It really is an exceptional game with a huge scope. I'm playing through it as a good character this time as well so I'm hearing all new dialogue which is helping it feel fresh again.

Doggie can be found in the lower-west end of the wastelands. I won't say exactly obviously. I encountered him during my first week of exploration in the wastelands and was totally taken by surprise. Minutes after getting him, he died in the very area I found him :( You'll know what I mean when you see what lurks there...

That may have been a random encounter then, as I've just read where he usually resides and it's fairly northern on the map. Apparently if you go past his usual spot without encountering him, he'll pop up later on in the game in a random encounter :)
I was playing it last night and have my game saved upto the point before you enter Raven Rock as that is the finale.
So there I am wondering around, kitted upto the max rambo style with very little that can take me on except maybe 5 deafclaws...when I stumble across the deafclaw santuary :o God that was scary! Found a bubble boy and a named weapon in there though!

The only thing you can't do after Raven Rock is done is go back to Raven Rock to get the bobblehead, much in the same way with Vault 101 after you do the 'Trouble on the home front' mission. You can continue with any other mission you wish after Raven Rock is exited.

I've completed Fallout 3 twice now. First time i missed a load of side missions. So i had to return to it and get the whole experience. It's a superb game but the DLC is too short and lacks depth. Operation Anchorage especially. The Pitt was just far too short. It also made me feel "travel sick". Which the main game never did and making an achievement "Find 100 Steel Ingots", God damn! Low blow! I eventually got there though!
Hurry up the last bit of DLC and prove me wrong! :(
NokkonWud

I'm at around 65 Steel Ingots now, only looked outside where you're told to go, so whether there are some in the main area where you enter I don't know. Also can't find the key to enter building in the Steel Yard and I'm guessing there are some in there.
Personally I LOVE the environment for The Pitt, I think it's superb, but I am worried that if I give up on the Steel Ingots it will be over quickly and finding them is extending my enjoyment of the DLC. I also liked Operation Anchorage as it felt so different from the main game, it was quite an enjoyable little side and brilliant for levelling up. I expect Broken Steel to be superb though, they made it clear with the level cap being heightened that, that was going to be the big one of the three.
There will also be more DLC after Broken Steel which is great news too :).

How very annoying, I can't find where I read, but it was a quote from some Bethesda bod that said that the team have thoughts far beyond Broken Steel on what to do for Fallout 3 and that it's not a stretch of the imagination for there to be more.
The only problem is, I can't find it. I'm 100% certain I didn't imagine it either.

Only 1 achievement left for me now, getting to level 20 with good karma, which I could knock off in an hour next time I play it if I want to. Got all The Pitt done yesterday, getting all 100 ingots was easy thanks to Lynnie reading off a guide for me, only took me 30 mins or so. Decent story and setting too, and the Ammo Press is a godsend as I have tons of 5.56mm ammo and not enough .44 Magnum rounds, so I exchanged 1000 5.56mm rounds for 200 .44 Magnum rounds. I'll definitely be heading back there in the future for more ammo when I need it. I'll be doing everything but the final mission on this playthrough then leave it till Broken Steel comes out :)
I need someone to sit next to me and read out the collection guide ;D save me so much time!

In my house in Megaton the locker on the right of the Workbench was for 'Misc' items, the one on the right of the Bobblehead stand was for 'Weapons', the fridge was for 'Aid' and the drawers in the bedroom was for 'Apparel'.
Always emptied my inventory, then re-filled it with exactly what I needed for the next quest. It's how I managed despite not being able to carry much. Uber-organized :D. Ended up with crazy numbers like 5 Fat Men, 8 Laser Rifles, 4 Plasma Rifles, 12 Chinese Assault Rifles and 8 Combat Shotguns. Something like that. Do the Minefield quest for Moira, as you can sneak through the town and pick up about 30+ mines (so make sure you have the carry space), which you can trade to Moira for ammo. There's only 1 enemy in the town as well, at the far end with a sniper rifle, and he's easy to kill if you work your way to him slowly.

I've still not found the comment regarding new DLC after Broken Steel that I read before, but this is something I've just read:
Fallout 3 ended up being one of last year's best role-playing games, and creator Bethesda Softworks intends to keep people playing it by releasing new downloadable adventures. The next downloadable content (DLC) will come in the form of Broken Steel, a new adventure that focuses on the mysterious wasteland knighthood known as the Brotherhood of Steel.
In that context it seems pretty clear that there will be another one after Broken Steel.
NokkonWud
21-04-2009, 15:20
Broken Steel release date is:
May 5th
http://tinyurl.com/dzmdgb
Broken Steel, the third downloadable episode for the PC and Xbox 360 version of Fallout 3, will raise the game's level cap to 30 and remove the games ending on May 5, Bethesda announced this week.
Broken Steel will sell for 800 points and will include an entire new area outside of Fallout 3's wasteland based on Andrews Air Force Base. The new DLC will also include more weapons, enemies and perks, including one that can bring back your dog when he's killed.
Broken Steel is the third of the three downloadable episodes Bethesda has been talking about for Fallout 3. The new content kicks off at the end of the game, changing away the original title ends and extending it perpetually. Once Broken Steel is downloaded Fallout 3 has no ending, Hines said.
"Broken steel doesn't have an ending," he said. "There are no more endings, we got the message."
The game also slightly tweaks the moments leading up to the ending, adding the ability to send one of several of your companions to complete the final task of the game, instead of doing it yourself.
The new content starts about two weeks after the events of Fallout 3's main quest, opening up in the Capital Wasteland by Project Purity, which is now up and running.
"Broken Steel takes into account what you did in Fallout 3 and what the world is like now," Hines said.
In Broken Steel the battle between the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave still rages and you are tasked with discovering and helping to build a Tesla Canon, a new, more powerful weapon for the Brotherhood.
As with the original Fallout 3 storyline, there are also a number of side quests in Broken Steel, most of which have to do with escorting freshly processed clean water across the wasteland and protecting it from raiders.
"You can get a number of different quests from a scribe, which has nothing to do with the main story," Hines said. "It adds some free-form miscellaneous quests you can do in the game."
The main quest sends you to an old power plat to find the parts for the Tesla Canon.
The new area is packed with new enemies, including a super mutant overlord, a feral ghoul reaver and an Enclave hellfire trooper; new weapons, like the Tesla Canon and a projectile flame thrower; new achievements and even new perks. Hines only detailed one of the perks though, called Puppies! If you pick the Puppies! Perk when Dogmeat dies he gets reincarnated automatically as a puppy, which you can go to certain areas to add back to your group.
The new pack also raises the level cap from 20 to 30 and greatly increases the enemy difficulty level.
"Enemies are a lot tougher," Hines said. "You start seeing new enemies at level 18.
"Advancement from 20 to 30 takes a ton of experience points."
Completing the main quest in Broken Steel will also require a bit of puzzle solving, Hines said. After you've get all of the parts for the new weapon, you take it trough the Presidential Metro Line to pull off an attack on the Enclave base.
One you cear out the Presidential Metro Line you get to make your way to Adams Airforce Base where you will be given new orders, Hines said.
"Adams Air Force Base is a new world space," he said. "You sort of leave the Wastelands and go to Adams Air Force Base, it's a pretty big space."
Hines says that the main quest for Broken Steel is a bit longer than The Pitt downloadable content, coming in at about four to five hours of gameplay, and that it also adds a bunch of sidequests which each take 30 minutes to an hour to complete.
The side quests, he said, have you going all over the world and give you a chance to see how it's changed since the end of the original Fallout 3.
The one thing that Broken Steel won't beef up are the collectibles, Hines said.
Much sooner than I was expecting. Great news!

Typical that it comes out the day after a long weekend! Still, only 2 weeks till it's out and I've got points kept aside for it, and will be buying it the moment it's available. I might also be feeling sick that day :D

Also, given the amount of XP needed to get from 20 to 30, I'm glad I stopped playing again when I hit level 20 on my 2nd playthrough as I've still got a lot of sidequests left to help levelling up.

It can't come soon enough! My game drought continues. I'm playing Bioshock (again) on/off to fill the gaps. I haven't played it since release. Forgot how gorgeous it is :o

I'll kick off the download when I go home for lunch, will probably play it a bit tonight, though I'm nowhere near the end of the game yet. May just blast through the rest of the story missions and do the side quests after that.
In typical PC style the Games for Windows client adds the DLC into the wrong place on your hard disk, so Fallout on Steam fails to see it. You have to copy the damn thing over to the steam directory except I can't see the DLC files fullstop atm.
Sigh, sometimes I wish I stuck to consoles. Not content with EVERY F3 DLC not installing to the correct F3 directory on Steam, Broken Steel is now bugged in that it displays a Cryptography error message during any attempt to install.
360 version seems unaffected.

Harsh but funny ;D
I've got my copy downloaded but not sure when I'll be playing it.
360 version is apparently borked too :p
Update: Spoke too soon! Xbox 360 users are experiencing a nasty bug that keeps them from activating Project Purity
another bugged release? Good job I wont have time to play this for a fortnight then :P
That is pretty embarrassing. They need to take a serious look at their release testing!

New DLC :D
Bethesda has unveiled two more Fallout 3 downloadable add-ons, one called Point Lookout (unsurprisingly) and the other called Mothership Zeta.
The first arrives late June and opens a big swamp to explore, but the latter, oh the latter, has us experience an alien abduction first-hand and discover whether we're tough enough to survive! Mothership Zeta arrives late July, and both are 800 MSP.
Bethesda also plans to offer all DLC on PS3. This will start with Operation: Anchorage in June and be followed by The Pitt and Broken Steel later. They'll be about a month or six-weeks apart - exact dates are TBC.
Finally, Bethesda revealed the not-so-secret DLC retail bundles. The first Fallout 3 add-on pack bundles Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt, and will be available on 12th June. The second pack has Broken Steel and Point Lookout and arrives in August.
There's also a Game of the Year Edition arriving in October for all three formats. This includes the original game plus all five DLC add-ons and costs 40 quid on consoles or 30 quid on PC.

What size is Point Lookout? Only got 600 Meg(ish) left. Seriously considering buying an Elite. Storage is becoming an issue more and more on my 20Gb :(

*slaps*
:D
The 720 (not the natal bundle), or whatever it will be called, will have to support any odd hdd like the PS3 does imo. If they continue to make this big digital push, the price per GB of storage on the Xbox's current storage options will give it a painful, artifical tax which their big competitor doesn't impose.

I'll be buying Point Lookout as soon as I get home, and will be hammering it tonight. I'm already on 1350/1350 on Fallout, so I expect to have the full 1450 within a couple of days. Hopefully it'll be as fun as The Pitt or Broken Steel :)

1450/1450, fun DLC, pretty short, but the new weapons are pretty uninspiring and not as powerful as previous new weapons. Still, good fun for a few hours and I've still got some side missions to finish off. Overall I'd put it around The Pitt for quality, and about the same length too :)
I've still not played the other DLC set after the game.... Can Point lookout be played after the main quests?
Davey_Pitch
24-06-2009, 09:52
Point Lookout can be played any time after leaving the vault, including after the main quests if you have Broken Steel :)
NokkonWud
24-06-2009, 10:45
I was hoping for something a bit more substantial really. Especially when Point Lookout and The Pitt combined = 1600, the same as Lost and The Damned for GTAIV which is pretty big.
It's a good job it's an awesome game.

I've collected lots of stuff that I need to either dump or sell urgently. Does anyone know where I can start selling items I've collected? I've just upgraded to level 5 so that should give you an idea as to where I am. There doesn't seem to be any traders anywhere..
Davey_Pitch
01-09-2009, 14:08
Go to Craterside Supply in Megaton and sell/trade your items with Moira. You should already know her as she gives you the (great) quest entitled "Wasteland Survival Guide". Remember traders only have a limited amount of caps, so be prepared to trade stuff a little at a time, or trade for lots of ammo :)
Edit: You can also trade with Moriaty in Megaton as well as the Doctor if you're low on Stimpaks.
Admiral Huddy

Nowhere near that long I would say....
Operation: Anchorage - 3-5 hours
The Pitt - 3-5 hours
Broken Steel - 5-8 hours
Point Lookout - 3-5 hours
Mothership Zeta - 3-5 hours
That's all depending on how thorough you want to be. The Pitt will take you a while as it has a collection achievement for finding 100 metal ingots, but I was lucky as I had Lynnie reading a guide out to me. If you've not done any of them then I would personally suggest doing Operation: Anchorage and Mothership Zeta first as they're more action based, and for me not as enjoyable as the other 3.

What is the DLC? Excuse my ignorance. Is that an expansion mod?
Davey_Pitch
03-09-2009, 15:21
Yup, 5 expansion packs for want of a better description. Broken Steel is the best of them, as it allows the game to continue after the "end", and also ups the level cap from 20 to 30 (it's possible to hit the level cap of 20 way before you finish the game).

No where near as long as the main game.
Anchorage takes about 90-120 minutes.
The Pitt about 120-240 minutes (mainly spent finding things).
Broken Steel takes about 180-240 minutes.
Point Lookout takes about 180-240 minutes (but has quests that aren't achievements so can take longer).
Mothership Zeta is about 120-180 minutes.
Those are all first time play through estimates, though it took me 13 hours to do Broken Steel, Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta as I was taking my time and trying to find everything as well as get all 3 level 30 achievements.
All told they aren't as long as the main campaign, or as well done bar maybe Point Lookout which it's clear was their pride and joy as far as the DLC went, it's superb looking, well designed and has a lot of new props.
I would personally suggest doing Operation: Anchorage and Mothership Zeta first as they're more action based, and for me not as enjoyable as the other 3.
Totally agree. If I had to put them into order I would go:
1) Point Lookout
2) The Pitt
3) Broken Steel
4) Operation Anchorage
5) Mothership Zeta
The irony is, for items picked up within those campaigns and their usefulness throughout the game, reverse the order of them.

Nah, for usefulness I think The Pitt is the best, for the ammo press and the Metal Blaster :)

The ammo press is handy, but you get so much of it in the wasteland anyway it barely matters. Plus Broken Steel and Mothership Zeta practically throw it at you :p.
