Release date: 31st Oct 2008

Fallout Official Site (http://fallout.bethsoft.com/index.html)

Game Info:

Vault 101 - Jewel of the Wastes. For 200 years, Vault 101 has faithfully served the surviving residents of Washington DC and its environs, now known as the Capital Wasteland. Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec® engineering. Yet one fateful morning, you awake to find that your father has defied the Overseer and left the comfort and security afforded by Vault 101 for reasons unknown. Leaving the only home you've ever known, you emerge from the Vault into the harsh Wasteland sun to search for your father, and the truth.

Features:

* Limitless Freedom! - Take in the sights and sounds of the vast Capital Wasteland! See the great monuments of the United States lying in post-apocalyptic ruin! You make the choices that define you and change the world. Just keep an eye on your Rad Meter!
* Experience S.P.E.C.I.A.L.! - Vault-Tec engineers bring you the latest in human ability simulation - the SPECIAL Character System! Utilizing new breakthroughs in points-based ability representation, SPECIAL affords unlimited customization of your character. Also included are dozens of unique skills and perks to choose from, each with a dazzling variety of effects!
* Fantastic New Views! - The wizards at Vault-Tec have done it again! No longer constrained to just one view, experience the world from 1st or 3rd person perspective. Customize your view with the touch of a button!
* The Power of Choice! - Feeling like a dastardly villain today, or a Good Samaritan? Pick a side or walk the line, as every situation can be dealt with in many different ways. Talk out your problems in a civilized fashion, or just flash your Plasma Rifle.
* Blast 'Em Away With V.A.T.S.! - Even the odds in combat with the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System for your Pip-Boy Model 3000! V.A.T.S. allows you to pause time in combat, target specific body parts on your target, queue up attacks, and let Vault-Tec take out your aggression for you. Rain death and destruction in an all-new cinematic presentation featuring gory dismemberments and spectacular explosions.
* Mind-Blowing Artificial Intelligence! - At Vault-Tec, we realize that the key to reviving civilization after a global nuclear war is people. Our best minds pooled their efforts to produce an advanced version of Radiant AI, America's First Choice in Human Interaction Simulation. Facial expressions, gestures, unique dialog, and lifelike behavior are brought together with stunning results by the latest in Vault-Tec technology.
* Eye-Popping Prettiness! - Witness the harsh realities of nuclear fallout rendered like never before in modern super-deluxe HD graphics. From the barren Wasteland, to the danger-filled offices and metro tunnels of DC, to the hideous rotten flesh of a mutant's face.

So, anyone as excited about this as me? :D

leowyatt
21-10-2008, 10:52
I'll be honest I'm not sure about it :/ I understand the basic premise but I haven't played the earlier games which is why it probably doesn't appeal to me as much as you.

From the demos I have seen it does look to be visually, excellent :)

Wossi
21-10-2008, 10:57
Considering I've booked the first week of November off to play this game, yes I'm excited :D I have the CE edition on pre-order purely for the lunchbox :D

I just hope they release a construction set for this so modding community can do what they did with Oblivion.

Tak

I loved playing the first one but thats it, I haven't really had a good look at the info for 3 but I will do :)

leowyatt
21-10-2008, 11:04
Reading the 6 hours playing article has made it sound more appealing but there is just so much out at the moment I don't know when I'll be able to put the time into it.

I still have Oblivion to play  only managed around an hour before I went back to something else :o I think it'll most definitely be a rental for me or maybe wait till it is cheaper.

NokkonWud
21-10-2008, 11:10
I have the Collectors Edition ordered at ShopTo. I wasn't sure til I saw the "Escape" video on the marketplace. 2 minutes into that I was sold and ordered it for £55, which has now dropped to £49 although I will admit to being intrigued by the masses of magazine coverage over the last 12 months.

I've not played the first 2, but I don't think that much matters as Bethesda have tried to make this a game in its own right.

I really can't wait to play it, it seems the perfect location for my tastes (post apocalyptic), the graphics and features are right up my street. It looks fan-freakin-tastic.

leowyatt
21-10-2008, 11:12
Is that video available online Nokkon?

EDIT: never mind found it on gametrailers :)

NokkonWud
21-10-2008, 11:17
It's as soon as he leaves the cave and looks out over the expansive world, the bloom effect settling, it's just one of those epic things. Saw that and ordered it.

Haly
21-10-2008, 11:28
I'm not 100% convinced yet either. I've no doubt it'll be a good game, just not sure how much I'd enjoy it. It reminds me too much of Oblivion which I was very disappointed by as really, it's just not my sort of RPG. Much prefer JRPGs.
I'll no doubt get it at some point, just not pre-ordering it.

NokkonWud
21-10-2008, 11:29
Guns and Nukes are cooler than Swords and Potions ;).

leowyatt
21-10-2008, 11:31
I know what you mean about Oblivion I just wasn't pulled into it straight away.

Haly
21-10-2008, 11:33
Guns and Nukes are cooler than Swords and Potions ;).

It's much more than that :p For one thing, I didn't like the combat system for Oblivion. Felt too clunky. And it wasn't as open as it liked to think it was (probably a restriction of the time though). And the story just didn't inspire me or make me attached to anyone.

First two Fallouts were brilliant though :)

NokkonWud
21-10-2008, 11:36
Then you'd better not mention you playing WoW again ;). Though I do agree with detachment from the characters, it's definitely a valid point.
Glad the first 2 were brilliant, they were 2 games I ignored.

If I get it done in a quick fashion you're more than welcome to borrow it Jen.

Haly
21-10-2008, 11:44
What's WoW got to do with it? Completely different genre :p The combat isn't clunky, just very detached and minimal but games like that always manage to do well because of their communities more than anything else. I always have different expectations for single player games.

And thanks for the offer :)

NokkonWud
21-10-2008, 11:51
The combat in WoW is awful! But yes, I see your point regarding SP and MP and their combat and communities. Heck, I only played CSS because I liked people in the community, it was just an advantage that I was excellent at it, but if it was a SP game I would never play it - heck, I didn't even like HL2 and the Source Engine annoys me.

And no worries ;).

Davey_Pitch
21-10-2008, 12:35
The combat in Fallout is completely different to Oblivion. You can play it like an FPS if you like (though there is an underlying RPG element determining accuracy and damage), or you can use the VATS combat system and turn it into a more similar combat experience to the first two games. I know I'll probably float between the two, depending on who and what I'm facing. I'm sure certain enemies will be easier using one method or the other.

I'll be buyng this, I'm tempted with the CE :)

As with most games for me now, I'll wait till it's around £20 and pick it up, or providing I get paid soon, £30. I just hope I can stand people saying how good it is (Nokkon) and don't rush out and buy it (Ninja Gaiden 2)

NokkonWud
21-10-2008, 14:59
Did you rush out and buy it (NG2) on my say-so?

Creature
21-10-2008, 15:05
Nope, on everyone else saying how good it was.

NokkonWud
21-10-2008, 15:13
Was gonna say, I didn't remember saying you should get it. I really like it, but I loaned it to a friend and haven't gotten back to it yet.

I did that too ;D

Pumpkinstew
22-10-2008, 08:48
I have this on pre-order.
I did it ages ago and now feel a bit silly as I have Bioshock, Company of Heroes and WAR to distract me also.
The fact that it arrives in a big clunky lunchbox is going to make it harder to conceal from 'her who likes to be paid attention to' as well. :o

Davey_Pitch
22-10-2008, 09:17

Didn't you buy the original Ninja Gaiden on my say so? :p

I did, but at a much cheaper price :p

NokkonWud

Didn't you buy the original Ninja Gaiden on my say so? :p

No, got that anyway as it looked cool. Bought God of War on your say so.

Davey_Pitch
22-10-2008, 11:27
That's right, I did remember you getting something as I recommended it. God of War was certainly a game worth recommending as well :D

NokkonWud
22-10-2008, 11:39
More so than Ninja Gaiden!
Best game on the Playstation 2 (and that's some achievement).

Davey_Pitch
22-10-2008, 11:50
I agree about it being the best game on the PS2, not the Ninja Gaiden bit though :p

NokkonWud

People, I saw the video of this and it grabbed attention. My question is how good are the previous instalments?

Very highly regarded, though Fallout 3 is the first to be 3D and FPS.

Streeteh
23-10-2008, 16:23
Fallout 1 + 2 are imo two of the best RPGs ever made, however this is nothing to go by as:

1. Fallout 3 is being developed by a completely different company
2. Fallout 3 is nothing like Fallout 1 + 2 in terms of gameplay, the only similarity is the setting.

Reviews are rolling in, and fallout 3 is doing damn well, shame i don't trust reviews these days :/. This is certainly a must buy for me, if it's half as good as Fallout 1 then it'll still be one of the best games this year.

ElRazur
23-10-2008, 19:24
So can I just jump into the 3rd one without playing the first two then? And still enjoy it?

NokkonWud
23-10-2008, 21:12
Yes

Davey_Pitch
24-10-2008, 09:06
So can I just jump into the 3rd one without playing the first two then? And still enjoy it?
Absolutely. I would guess that there'll be lots of things in the game that you'll get if you've played the first 2 games (little in jokes maybe, or references to previous characters), but you won't need to know anything about the previous games to play this. You could always go here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout_series) to read more about the series if you want :)

Marmoset
27-10-2008, 16:12
I hope this lives up to the hype. I've seen some gameplay footage recently and the NPC movement looked a bit weird: quite wooden and old-fashioned.

I' pre ordered this this morning after deliberating between it and fable 2. Gotta be honest, I'm chuffing excited about this game randomly, completely new to the series tbut this just looks like fun to muck around with.

Eurogamer 10/10 (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=270173)

In any case, I'm scraping the barrel for things to pick holes in. Fallout 3 has been by some margin the most enjoyable game I've played since BioShock - a game with which it shares a similar artistic vision and ambience. Despite so many worries, Fallout 3 almost effortlessly succeeds in its central aim of reviving a much-loved brand to appeal to the vast majority of players. It's a thrilling, all-consuming experience that will absorb you for weeks, whether you're attracted by the action, the adventure, or the role-playing, as you fall in love with the relentless excitement, incredible atmosphere, sense of place and sheer choice.

Bethesda has once again delivered a game of life-affirming brilliance that will be heralded as a classic, and talked about for years to come.
Interest piqued, I loved Bioshock.

leowyatt
28-10-2008, 12:06
He didn't really praise the game at all, unless I'm reading it wrong  He just whinged about Oblivion and what was wrong with it. The only thing he linked from what I can understand is the environment.

Davey_Pitch
28-10-2008, 12:41
I know, the UK review looked like it was written by someone who didn't actually like RPGs very much, yet knew he had to give it a good score. The AU and US reviews are much better in terms of describing the game better I feel.

NokkonWud
28-10-2008, 14:00
The fact the other 2 are so close leads me to believe that the UK reviewer is talking out his arse.

Ultra_Extreme has almost finished the pirated copy he has and he said it's one of the best games he's played in a long, long time.

Bioshock is quite possibly *the* best game on the 360, so anything compared to it needs to be good. I have very high hopes for Fallout, and only a couple of days till I have it to see whether it meets those hopes :)

As I've said before. Play COD2 on the 360 on Veteran and don't give up until you've finished it.

Perfect advice. By the time it's done you can play any FPS on a console.

Loki, it also doesn't help that you've only (possibly) tried learning FPS on a Playstation pad. They're awful for FPS games, especially in comparison to the 360 pad which is brilliant.

Play Fallout 3 like a shooter and you'll be playing it wrong ;) Use the VATS system instead, every review has said it's the only way to play the game :)

And I shouldn't have taken the piss out of Nokkon for not being able to play this yet, as it looks like my copy hasn't arrived here in work today. Most disappointed.

Marmoset
30-10-2008, 12:53
Played the PC version for a few hours last night and I'm loving it. :D

The engine looks quite dated compared to things like Crysis and Far Cry 2 (but then what doesn't?) but the gameplay is showing huge potential already and I'm right at the beginning.

Don't want to spoil it for anyone so I won't go into details but I love the way you can be a complete b*stard right from the off.

Didn't think I'd like the VATS system but after using it to shoot someone's face off and nick all their cigarettes I'm a convert.

I think this game's going to be a stormer.

Gameplay only send stuff out 1st class so it would have arrived with the standard post (which I've already looked through). It's not a huge problem really, as I can just play some more Fable, but it had better get here tomorrow, I have a quiet weekend planned and Fallout is meant to be a part of that :)

I've played it for about an hour and a half. I liked the whole character creation bit but so far I'm underwhelmed with the gameplay. Is it possible to equip any miscellaneous items, for example, so you can collect water in empty bottles and stuff? Right now all I'm doing is finding loads of quests, picking up random objects (almost all useless) and getting my ear chewed off by people I have little interest in talking to! Yeah, I hit a mutated mole with a baseball bat but that's pretty much the most fun I've had so far. Apart from knocking my dad unconscious with a BB gun.

ignore my previous spoiler tagged question - I've sorted it!

I got very engrossed with the game yesterday. at about 1pm I decided to play it for an hour or two, eventually turned it off at half 6ish. Mainly because I discovered a location and wanted to finish exploring it before I turned it off, but the place just was HUGE and I kept finding new places to explore in it. Gonna have to go back there today at some point to explore the basement area (which I read some references to in one the the computer terminals in the building) after finding the key on a random raider ...

I like the skills and abilities format - it just seems to work (for now at least), But I understand the comment from mister cheese about items. At the moment I dont know whats worth keeping and what isnt! I found the same with oblivion - there was just so much stuff around, cups, plates, fruit, cutlery, ornaments etc...

What graphics card have you got?

Frankly as a PC gamer I'm starting to feel like a second class citizen. Controls muffed to work with joypads, extra copy protection, bugged PC editions in simultaneous releases and fewer and fewer boxes on shelves in the high street.

It's enough to turn a chap to piracy. And clearly in many cases it has.
It's hard to have sympathy with studios bleating about piracy hurting the industry when they're so hellbent on shooting themselves in the foot.

My GPU is a 9800GTX+. I've downloaded the most recent drivers to see if that helps.
Whilst I'm on that subject here's another rant (sorry, indulge me this once).
Why can't they update incrementally? They release a new set every 10-15minutes and yet each time they expect me to downlaod 100megs!
Are you seriously telling me that every line of code in the package I downloaded just two weeks ago is now redundant?

Typically i would agree with you, consoles are just easier these days, driver issues, optimization issues, hardware issues, DRM issues the list goes on and on and PC gamers have to put up or shut up as it stands. But i'm going to draw a comparison as to why people should get fallout 3 on a pc if they can; Oblivion. Oblivion is a very similar game (well duh streeteh) and was very good across all platforms, however on the PC mods pushed it from a good game up to an excellent game. AI fixes, graphics overhauls, added quests, added items, improved inventory systems, improved alchemy systems, improved leveling mechanic; today nearly every element of Oblivion has been fixed or improved for free on the PC and i would be willing to wager the same will happen with this too.

As many reviews have said, Fallout 3 is a flawed diamond, in a years time some PC geeks will have polished out the flaws :)

And not one of those was immediate on day of release. It's okay saying "Get the PC version, in 12 months it will be awesome", but most people want to play it now and on launch days it's laughable how many PC games have issues.

Well i haven't had any issues so i'm happy :p

It's just as good on the PC (assuming you're not one of the few who have had crashing issues) so you get the same experience, but for your money you also get the ability to replay it in the future in a far improved form. Sounds good to me!

[EDIT] As a side note, pumpkin stew, do you happen to have an Asus Xonar sound card? Apparently the current drivers for those cause fallout 3 to crash and you need to use the beta drivers. If not there's a few other things you could try, let me know and i'll do some digging.

As long as you can spank £400 every few months on a new graphics card then there's no tweaking required: just max everything out and go for it. :D ;D

I understand that consoles are easier to use, that's the point of them. But I prefer the modular nature of PCs and the fact that, if you can afford the hardware, your game will look and run better than the equivalent on a console.

That said, I think I must be one of the lucky few who has no problems running PC games at all and haven't had for as long as I can remember.

Every game that I can think of that I've installed has just worked. I never have issues with drivers or game crashes and much prefer mouse/keyboard to any console controller (I own a 360 and PS3 as well as a PC before anyone calls me a fanboy :p).

If a game is multi-platform then it's PC for me every time.

I was lucky enough to compare FarCry 2 on Xbox360 and FarCry 2 on PC side by side, both on the same monitors (PC running 4gb RAM and 8800 Ultra) and barring a little bit of sharpness from the increased resolution there was nothing in it, and the Xbox360 is 3 years old (older than the graphics card by a long way).

When I say a little bit of sharpness I'm not exaggerating, some people wouldn't even notice.

Then there is Gears of War 2 which I saw being run and blows away anything I've seen.

I like the idea that you buy your console and don't have to worry about anything, it's all done for you and done brilliantly. I think a lot of PC users like to believe that PC's do graphics a lot better than consoles when it's a total fallacy. I've seen people commenting that Call of Duty 4 looks rubbish on consoles in comparison when in actual fact it's stunning on 360 and often just lacks that little bit of sharpness because you're running it on a large HDTV. I also like that you don't have to be updating your drivers for audio and video and then on top of that patching your game and tweaking configs, Consoles then get better looking over the years where as PC's get worse (if unchanged).

Considering the Xbox360 is 3 years old it's still very close to matching the PC in almost every way.

That said, I think I must be one of the lucky few who has no problems running PC games at all and haven't had for as long as I can remember.

I never had THAT many problems, I had that major echo bug in Battlefield 2 way back when and that's pretty much it, but I just got sick of all the tweaking - sometimes it's nice to just sit back and enjoy and with the LIVE service I find it hard to use anything else.

Marmoset
31-10-2008, 18:40
some people wouldn't even notice
I'm not one of those people. I notice. ;D And increased resolutions aren't the only added eye candy the latest graphics cards can handle.

There is also undeniable slowdown on console games (I've seen this on a lot of 360 and PS3 titles) as well as pop-ups which you just have to put up with. If you get slowdown on a PC you can upgrade.

Two other things I don't like about consoles: the controllers and long load times (compared to a decent RAID setup). Not much you can do about those either.

I'm not saying PC gaming is the cheapest or easiest solution, far from it, but I'm fortunate enough to have all 3 platforms and I know which one I keep going back to for gaming (hint: it's not the 360 or PS3). ;)

I can't deny the ease of use of consoles though; I'm with you on that one.

I'm not into online gaming so I've never really used PSN or Live. Everything I've read indicates that Live is still a long way ahead though. Is this still the case?

Sorry for taking this OT. :o

NokkonWud
31-10-2008, 20:14
It's miles ahead (Live). I'm hoping MS can enforce it in the PC market too, that would bring PCs and Xbox's onto the same service (though not necessarily cross compatible). I just think it would be the best thing to happen to PC gaming in a long, long time.

I personally love the Xbox360 controller, I'm with you on the PS controller though, it's just not good. With the latest Xbox360 update you can install games to your hard-drive.
I can't say I've noticed a whole lot of long load times at all anyway. I played Fallout 3 last night for 3 hours and only encountered 4 loads all of which were less than 2 seconds.

I still think Fallout 3 will be the first game I install (albeit just to try it out).

Nah I just took them out another way and then made it to the middle and back out, then I went somewhere else and couldn't find what I was looking for so I explored DC and made it all the war to GNR but my god is it tough, I think the game expects people to beef up outside DC first. No matter I'm going to do the mission here if I can and then mince about the outlying lands for a while :)

I actually think the game system and story are very true to the first 2 games, the role playing element of combat is great and if you can't get the job done with that you can always revert to FPS until you build your AP up, works really well for me :)

OK, I'm starting to get into it now. It helps if I just think of it as 'Oblivion 40,000'. The wastelands are really atmospheric and there's a proper sense of futility from most of the NPCs, especially in Big Town AKA Emovile. I heard there's a glitch on the quest called Blood Ties, but not sure if it's just on PC, or console, or both. Luckily I was having trouble with it and had to look up a location on the internet (after searching for eight hours).

The combat mode is just awesome, but it's a shame they haven't sorted out the jump properly since Oblivion. Half the time I'm pummeling the Y button to try and get up a hill, and once I got stuck i the rocks and had to quit. :(

I have to say I am really really impressed with this game Nokkon sent me an in game message and asked me what I thought and without really thinking about it I said I thought it wasn't just game of the year but game of the decade. Although said as an off the cuff remark the more I play it the more this holds true certainly the best game IMHO for the 360 so far and I haven't played much to rival it on the PC.

There are certain things which stand out for me, firstly the combat system, to me this is the perfect fusion role-play and action, there have been criticisms of the game as a 'poor FPS', no excrement! This game isn't a shooter it’s an RPG and the VATS system an action point allocation system which breaks the combat in to rounds is there to be used allowing you to individually target an enemy body part or blow their weapon out of their hands. I can honestly say this system is a near perfect fusion of strategy and action. There are a couple of issue with the system, firstly it doesn't take in to account the use of healing which can be used outside of the Action Point system, making a character with multiple healing packs pretty much a tank. Some will also find the ability to drop out of VATS and just shot things a bit odd, personally I like it because it enables you to take out a tiny enemy such as a cockroach in real time without having to use VATS, it also emulates a combatants panic with the ability to fire indiscriminately from your virtual death bed in a desperate attempt to kill the foe before he gets in a killing shot on you, I've found this a big bonus but also very exciting 'can I get a hit in before he does' the times I've pulled this off have been heart racing, something which people say the VATS system negates.

So what about the actual game? Well it the Oblivion engine with the Bethesda weird 'press the top button for jump' thing going on and the same slightly rounded feeling landscape where you can sometimes walk up slopes you shouldn't be able to and hop along on stupidly narrow bits of scenery, but that’s where the likeness ends. This game has been well thought out, although there are multiple underground areas to explore some of which are a little similar Fallout 3 avoids the feeling that these have been randomly generated it feels like the items and creatures have been put in with care and attention. Where Oblivion was so massive and so long that the game started to lose my interest at about 75% of the way through due to missions being very similar and having to grind dungeons Fallout 3 doesn't feel that that, every mission is scripted and crafted to be an individual experience but you don't have to do the missions and you don't even have to do the main storyline, you can just go out and explore. The game has been designed in such away that you'll have to do a hell of a lot of exploring and levelling to actually mess up the story completely but if you really wanted to you could probably get to some important parts directly and stumble on thing by luck.

What about interaction with NPCs? Wow, just WOW! This game has some great voice acting and every response is spoken, how they got all this on one disk I have no idea, I suppose if they could do it with Oblivion, I shouldn't be surprised but Oblivion felt like it was put together with a construction set and this doesn't. Here one example of interaction.

I met a ghoul (a rational human horrifically scared by radiation poisoning) he wanted to live in an area for rich humans but they are scared of and irrationally prejudiced towards ghouls. So you have a choice you can try to get this guy in through rational argument with the existing residents in which you'll have to do a lot of persuasion and maybe the odd assassination of a subbon human to get your own way (hey its all in the name of ghoul/ human relations!), you can take up an offer to kill the ghouls from a resident or you can get the ghouls in round the back and let them sort it out for themselves, all along the way you'll use PER and INT rolls but the game hides them, there is no pre-judgement as to whether what you do is right or wrong and the repercussions are multiple whatever your choice. When you do sort it out rather than just instantly transform the games circumstances the ghouls walk to the place, go in through the entrance and spend some time establishing themselves, although its fundamentally unimportant, in earlier games they would have moved everyone into new positions instantly, in Fallout the game rearranges itself in real time.

When it comes to buying things, NPCs have a set amount of cash, if you try to sell everything to one person then their cash will max out and you'll only get what’s in they purse, but you can trade, so sell them a gun and offset the cost against something you need that they have, its so simple that from now on every game where I have to cash out of a sell screen to enter a buy screen is going to annoy me. This NPC limited funds system means its actually hard to get rich quick, you'll probably never have 1000s and 1000s of CAPs to your name but as you acquire new weapons and armour your cash will be invested in what you wear and shoot, all of which depreciates with wear and tear!

If there is one doubt I have about this game it is that some of the city areas are a little restrictive, forcing you down myriad tunnels and through a maze of city blocks which can feel a little forced but its not much of the game and its not going to spoil your enjoyment, when you can fast travel out of the city and go off hiking, doing your best to avoid the giant ants, mire lurks, super mutants and raiders. I went hiking yesterday and found a chap hiding out in an old church, he had a map, a really cool gun and some weird special clothing, if I hadn't gone off piste I may never have found him or the mission he's given me access to, and that’s the joy of this game, you have real freedom. Finally I think we are getting close to being able to replicate tabletop RPGs on screen with the 360 playing the dungeon master, no it’s not the same but it’s the closest yet and that can only be a good thing.

That was something that was in the original Fallout games and I'm really happy they kept it in. You're meant to be in a post apocalyptic wasteland, so people won't have much money, so it makes perfect sense to give people a finite amount of Caps and you have to barter and trade around that.

Really looking forward to spending some more time with this later. Got one achievement left in Fable, then I can settle into this (and yes Nokkon, Dead Space as well :p).

Well said Mat, you're pretty much spot on - especially in regards to the voice acting, something I've not heard get the credit it deserves.

Despite its similarities with Oblivion they feel completely different outside the control set, I also don't lose interest in Fallout 3, something I did in Oblivion and just stopped talking to people to try and force something along the main storyline, in Fallout 3 I've heard almost every line of text from every single person because I am genuinely interested. This game could be phenomenal.

I wouldn't go as far as game of the year but it's certainly got me hooked now. After 30 hours of gameplay I still haven't asked Moriarty about my dad! It still feels very much like a more polished version of Oblivion but with a far superior combat system.

I'm already maxed out on Sneak and Lockpick, with small guns not far behind. I also have the Bloody Mess perk which means enemies explode on most of the critical hits. :D I've found an absolutely awesome rifle as well. It's called Lincoln's Repeater and you can get it in a museum. It fires Magnum rounds and does over 40 hit points of damage. Super Mutant head shots with sneak bonus can make them burst. :D again.

I wish I could be excited reading about this game :/ But it's just not sparked my interest enough for some reason. I'm partly blaming its release as it was so close to Fable 2, but the whole development has never really got me interested even though it feels like it should.
Still, I guess it's cheaper for me to not be interested for now.

Definitely the case, and in fairness it dropped smack in the middle of Fable 2 and Gears of War 2, and although it does hold its own against both of those, if not possibly betters, I can understand why some wouldn't get excited about it.

I agree, the relese date for this was a pretty stupid move, because it isn't imediately obvious which genre this game falls into then it needed something extra to get it into the public eye. Although there are a number of die hard Fallout fans out there there was even some doubt if they would accept it. I think waiting until a lul in the release calender might have made a huge difference to the impact this game has had. That said I think it will grow in monentum.

for me this is a better experience than Fable 2, where Fable 2 is cute and for me knocks all the previous arcade RPG/ JRGPs so far on the 360 into a cocked hat, Fallout 3 is just a better, more free form more rounded experience. I have no interest in playing Fable anymore, once I got launched into the endgame I knew I wouldn't go back, F3 on the otherhand I probably will play again and this is high praise indeed from me because I just don't replay games. In fact I'll almost certainly trade Fable 2 for Gears next week whereas like Oblivion, F3 will stay on the shelf :)

I agree, for me this should have been delayed at least 2 further weeks, if not a month and had it's go at being the major December game. It's a shame to say really because this game IS of a quality and standard (and pedigree) high enough to compete with any title on the format, which is almost certainly why it has been released, but the majority don't buy games religiously, but if you said to the average gamer that within a week you can choose between Fallout 3 or Gears of War 2 I know what the majority would buy.

Hell, I knew what Fallout 3 was all about and how good it would be and I'd still go for Gears of War 2 first :p.

I'm really loving having 100 sneak, 100 small guns, the sniper perk and the bloody mess perk. My chances of hitting someone in the head from miles away and scoring a critical, sneak-bonus, face-bursting hit are very high indeed. Raiders don't stand a chance unless they're a long way off, and a sweet shot always takes their head clean off! At worst, you can blow their gun away and they have the long, angry pipe-wielding sprint to try and reach you before you casually reload.

At 1am this morning I found the Fat Man gun but was too tired to keep playing. Good job I saved all those mini-nukes - I was wondering what they were for!

I'm not saying this to put off experienced people as they may think "if Pheebs can do it, it's got to be pants" but it's more of a you-can-take-it-slow if you need to which is exactly what I need to do so I can improve!

Lunchbox
Cherry Bomb

I have to say, after 6 hours or so playing this today, I'm hooked. There's just so much to do, it feels like there's so much to do. I love exploring the wasteland on my way to different quests. I use the hunting rifle on the whole (and occasionally on the hole if they're facing away). I can now take out a super mutant with one shot to the head. The Chinese assault rifle is generally more powerful then the standard assault rifle so it's worth looking for one.

I like the variety of weapons and have quite a few small arms in my arsenal (haha!). I'm currently carrying:

10mm pistol (good against bloatfly and radroaches).
Silenced 10mm pistol (same, but doesn't alert others).
10mm SMG (rarely use it and sometimes discard if I need more backpack space!).
Chinese assault rifle.
Combat shotgun.
Hunting rifle.
Sniper rifle (plus perk that gives me a high chance of getting a head shot).
Lincoln's Repeater (high damage, uses Magnum rounds, can be repaired with the hunting rifle).
Fat Man (fires mini nukes - never been in enough danger to need it so far, but looking forward to when I do!).
Also have a few plasma and frag grenades/mines, and bottlecap mines.

No big guns (except Fat Man) or energy weapons, although I obtained a plasma rifle from a quest but just have it stored. Next time I go through I'll probably concentrate on energy weapons.

10m Pistol - good against bloatfly and roaches
Bottlecap Mine - boom, big time
Chinese Assault Rifle - good against anything
Dart Gun - Legendary against anything on two legs
Fat Man - Nukes. Nuff said.
Frag Grenades x 10
Frag Mines x 10
Lincoln's Repeater - only just got this, need more ammo
Missile Launcher - just because I like shooting rockets into people's faces
Nuke-Grenade - makes things go boom
Reservist Rifle - like the sniper but does more damage
Sydney's 10mm Ultra SMG - kick ass unique weapon
The Terrible Shotgun - makes the combat shotgun look like a pea shooter

I probably carry more than I need, but variety is the spice of death :D

Davey_Pitch
08-11-2008, 14:44
You mean in terms of weaponry or just stuff in general? For weaponry, I carry a lot to cover all situations, as different guns are better against different enemies, and as they deteriorate in the field, it's always good to have spare weapons.

For stuff in general, there is a lot of useless junk out there which is no good at all. If you find the schematics for different weapons you can turn some of that junk into very useful weapons.

I agree about the ending. I'm also slightly annoyed that when the story ends you can't continue and go looking for the countless places yet undiscovered. Had to load a save from right before the last quest.

I think I only have about three or four side quests to finish, 7 bobbleheads to collect, and a few more speech wins to get for all those achievements, then I'll have to restart to get the bad/neutral karma ones. :(

I did! It was 100% fix0red buuut... it's still a stump on the screen!

Tis peculiar!

Think I managed to break it :D

First, have you been to a doc?

Second, can we call you stumpy from now on?

Ooh this game is clever. I inadvertently missed one of the main storyline quests out by searching around and found someone who had a better idea where my Dad was than the person I was originally going to talk to. It completed the first quest but didn't give me the achievement. When I finally bumped into the person I was first meant to speak to, and spoke to him about my Dad, it fully completed the quest for me, and gave me the achievement. I've also found a lot more of the item I was missing for one other quest, so it looks like when I'm done I'll only have the karma, speech and hacking achievements left :)

Clever. Sounds a good get round.

Sounds a lot like something that happened to me in Fable 2 where I slayed a farmer, but later on all guides said I needed to be his friend to gain access to his basement -- obviously, having killed him that was an issue. The next time I returned to his house there was a fresh grave and I was able to dig up the key needed.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, there's four in a crashed truck on the road East of Old Olney, and three in the place where they're manufactured... provided you've thrown a spanner in the works. :D

I also found about 6 behind the stairs on the ground floor in Eulys(spelling?) house in Paradise Falls.

I've 27 now :) Nearly there.

I actually found 5 in that truck, which was nice :) Not been to the place they're manufactured yet, though it is on my map.

I've been there but can't remember if I picked them up or not, certainly not that many anyway. Will have to go back as I need 8 in addition to the 3 in the factory mentioned above :)

Yup and he tells me I'm fine!

So yeh! You might as well call me stumpy cos that's what I am!

I'm hoping my lower leg will get blown off again at some point so I can fix it again and then hopefully it will de-stumpify itself ;D

Woot, hadn't picked them up the first time, so with them and a few others, I now have 27 with 3 left at the factory. I'll hopefully be finishing up that and my final quest later today :)

Right, everything is done now that I can do in this playthrough. Every mission done, every bobblehead found, over 100 locations found, every behemoth killed, the lot. Only got the hacking, speech and karma achievements left, but I don't think I can go through the game again any time soon, not after around 75 hours of gameplay in just under 2 weeks. May sell it while it's got a high value and perhaps pick up the CE in 6 months when it's dirt cheap.

I have everything except the other karma achievements, and that damned speech one. Have about 42 logged and no-one of any importance left to talk to!

I wonder if it tracks stuff like the speech achievement over multiple characters. It would certainly make the achievement easier to get.

My copy is on the way along with my Mum's 360.
Bit more keen about this now, especially as I'll have Fable 2 1ked by the end of tomorrow.

Yup :p And deliberately too. Didn't want to rush it at all!
Gargoyle and key hunting has been a bit tedious but otherwise I've loved every second with both playthroughs :D

Just started playing this and suddenly my available quests are unavailable because i don't have the skills to do them!?! how can i improve them?

Davey_Pitch

You need to level up to improve your skills, but I never had quests unavailable due to lack of skills. You can also take various drugs which can temporarily improve your stats.

cool... well when i say unavailable it just tells me my skills need to be at a certain level or higher.
theres an appointment with a dealer i need to get to then, hopefully that'll help!

Thought I'd show off my free figure :D

Not a bad little set, got it all for £30 as it came with my Mum's 360 for the same price as a regular Arcade.

Not playing it yet though as I've got Quantum of Solace to play before I have to return it tomorrow night.
