OK For the PS3 fraternity who is getting Little Big Planet. All I have read is nothing but good reports and previews of Little Big Planet. Whether it will turn out to be the Killer App for PSN, remains to be seen but I am really looking forward to this.

As an aside it's a shame that all the game developers clamour for what is essentially limited shelf space at this time of the year. So many good games coming out on all platforms. Only so much game time and money :'(

Yeah, this is one title I definitely want, I'll no doubt trade something in towards it. It's definitely one of the AAA titles released this year and alongside MGS4 the biggest exclusive on the format.

Rental is your friend ;) I played and completed Star Wars:TFU and it only cost me a tenner, currently we're playing Lego Star Wars still on the same £10.

Can you give us some info on LBP as all I know is it is a platform game. I'm genuinely interested, don't get the fanboy thing at all :)

Well from what I understand it is pretty much a platform kind of game across 50 or so levels. However where the real beauty comes into is that it the game world can be as open and as varied as you want as their is a share mode where you can create your own game worlds and puzzles. Basically it's all user generated so it's limits are on the gamers imagination. Better yet, whatever is created will be available across all three gaming regions.

Three game modes: Play, Create & Share

It's a bit of an unsual step for Sony because they said they never wanted any kind of icon to be associated with PS3 or PSN but Little Big Planet could end up fitting hand in glove with PSN Home and really pushing that as a platform to compete with XBL.

I suppose the closest game at present would be Spore without the hype and the draconian DRM

Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LittleBigPlanet) Has a good overview of it

I believe you can also play cooperatively with up to 3 other players.

I actually couldn't think of a game less like LBP than spore :p. In spore none of the user created content had an effect on the game other than deciding what other aliens would look like. In LBP the user created content IS the game.

The beta was fantastic, it only had 3 of the developer made levels it in, but i played it for hours and never had to play the same level twice purely because of all of the user created levels. Some were just brilliantly done, one of which springs to mind was me and two other guys controlling the movement of a crane using levers in order to rebuild a broken bridge so we could cross. Another cool one was getting into a NASA space rocket and landing on the moon, then driving across it on a moon buggy.

The beauty of this game is the fact that all of the tools that media molecule (the developers) used to create the levels are available to the players too, all the levels that we make can be put online for everyone to play. The result of this could well be an almost unlimited amount of unique levels.

Would be playing it tomorrow if it hadn't been delayed till next week :(

ShopTo told me it was being put back to October 31st, the original release date. Only now have they told me Nov 5th, big fibbers :(

Just had a look at a couple of the preview videos and it does look cracking. Think I may have to treat myself for GFs birthday.

Does this have any relation to the old game, Little Big Adventure?

It just has so much... character. Not played a game in years that felt like it was made by a bunch of mates if you see what i mean. Loads of in-jokes like their rather worrying obsession for beavers (the animal!), the sound track is utterly sublime except for one level which has a far less interesting song put in, a e-cookie for the first person to guess which level that is... ;)

Finally, the game to get a PS3 for, it took 2 years but a system defining game for Sony. Brilliant!!

Just been playing this and despite being totally knackered I can't help but laugh and be astounded by the creativity and imagination involved :D

Love it - shame I need to get a system update to play online. Really could have done with being a mandatory before you start playing a game message....

Well it's got the approval of Young Master Loki aged 6 and three quaters. He loves it. Amazing how they have made it so much fun for all age groups and so easy to pick up

It does get incredibly difficult towards then end, which really has pleased me. I had worried that they would fall into the common habit of making games everyone can complete.

The 2x challenges are the best part of the game imo :D

Inoshishi, Msmalls, Streeteh, Loki and Psymonkee, are you interested in getting a game together this week sometime?

I really don't see the attraction at all

A friend of mine has it though so perhaps he can explain it to me :)

NokkonWud

Fun.

That's the attraction right there. Everyone I've played with has been in fits of laughter playing it. It's also a very, very well done platformer.

phykell
13-11-2008, 14:55
I've not universally condemned it or anything, I just don't see any attraction in a simple platform game, whether or not you can play co-operatively and build your own maps or not. I should have a better idea by the end of the weekend though.

I cut my teeth on the original platform games like Manic Miner and Jetset Willy so who knows? :)

A friend of mine has it though so perhaps he can explain it to me :)

I was listening to Gamers with Jobs podcast this morning on the way in and he kind of put it nice for me. "It's a great game to sit on your setee and have some fun with your friends. If your bored of blood and guts, dungeons and cars then this might be the refreshing change for you"

It's not the social experience of the Wii but it is something that is a bit refreshing. I think what makes it stand out is that a lot of games nowadays often take you by the hand from point A to Point B. Your goals are very defined. With the odd exception games are about the achievement above the experience.

LBP seems to readress this by ensuring the journey is as much fun as the result.

Not sure if that makes sense really

NokkonWud
13-11-2008, 16:06
It doesn't make sense because as a social experience it blows the Wii away.

phykell
13-11-2008, 16:06
It does :)

I wouldn't have bought it from the ads and trailers I've seen so far though. Once I've tried it out, that may change. It doesn't help that I don't have any free time these days. Haven't even had a holiday for over three years :(
