View Full Version : Guinea Pig Update

I've had the guinea pigs about two and a half weeks now, and they've relaxed hugely meaning their personalities have shined through, so just a little update on them for those interested :)

Scruffy is quite quiet but very content. She’s quite happy to sit quietly and nibble away at food taking her time. She does seem to like squeaking to herself though! She just wanders round the cage squeaking away like she's having a conversation to herself ;D One downside to her slowly nibbling is Toffee is entirely different in that respect, but luckily she doesn’t steal too much food off her.

Toffee is a total nutter half the time. She runs around jumping and squeaking when it’s mealtime and then promptly eats her food at 100mph. Although she does find the time to nibble a bit of everything just in case she’s missing something amazing. She regularly does mad laps round the cage often causing Scruffy to jump in the food bowl to avoid getting flattened! However she is entirely devoted to her sister, they are always cuddled up together when they sleep and if you remove Scruffy from the cage first, Toffee panics and squeaks for her till they’re reunited.

We’ve given them a few cuddles now to get them used to human attention. Scruffy is quite happy to sit back and be cuddled, even wrapped in a towel. However Toffee is far too busy and interested for all that. She loves climbing up necks, trying to explore as much as she can get away with and generally attempting to get into trouble. Very inquisitive little thing. She does like a nice cuddle in the end though once she’s decided she’s seen everything she wants to see. Scruffy seems to need more sleep than Toffee, presumably because she’s so much smaller so I think that’s why she seems more chilled out at the moment. One particular funny moment the other day when they were being cuddled was when Toffee ran underneath Scruffy so that Scruffy was covering Toffee’s face. Was Scruffy bothered about being nearly flung by her sister? Not at all!

Anyway, here’s some photos from the other day. Only taken on my iPhone I’m afraid so no impressive camera work. I might take some video at some point as they do some daft things you can’t see properly in a photo.

Scruffy’s got the hang of the posing lark ;) She seemed extremely happy to be cuddled up in a towel, maybe it felt like a giant guinea pig to her!

The two of them together. I think Toffee was checking Scruffy over in case the nasty human (me :p) had done something awful to her in the brief time they’d been seperated!

My Mum stopped stroking Toffee for a second so she could change channels on the TV. Toffee decided the remote looked tasty so had a go at chewing the red button (maybe she wanted to see the interactive content?). That guinea pig will eat anything, I’m sure of it.

There’s a fair few other photos but I didn’t want to bore people too much and a lot of them are very similar, but if anyone’s interested, they’re located here. (http://www.halycopter.com/images/gps/)

Oh and Harry is dealing with them quite well. He sits and watches them as they go about their business in the cage, hasn't once tried to get in the cage or anything. Just sits happily looking at them, he's fascinated! A few times when we've had them cuddled up on our laps, he's sat between us and watched them too, but again not tried to touch them. Which I think for a cat is the best you can expect really!

Awww, I've always preferred guinea pigs to rabbits. These are the third lot we've had in my lifetime, although the first two had babies (unfortunately one died and we had to give the other away :(). They rock :D

I love piggies!!!!

Wanna hook up your girls and my boy and get more piggies??

Don't tempt me ;D
Get posting pics of yours though :)

Edit: Ahh those pics of the cage are from when we first had them and they were just kicking the sawdust everywhere :p They've settled now so got a fair bit more to the point you can't see the cage floor anymore :D

Ohhh and i dunno if you know, but don't give them lettuce, apparently it isn't good for them.

Spinich has always been a winner for us though, oh and tomatoes lol

You arent sposed to give Lettuce to guinea pigs or rabbits due to its high water count and the fact it can give them diarrhoea. Some owners do though without problems, but it is supposed to be avoided for that reason.

Yeah we haven't fed them that :) Our old guinea pigs loved lettuce but this lot are under strict dietary advice courtesy of some websites :p
They mainly get a variety of cucumber, carrot, broccoli (not too much because of wind), kale, parsley (which they're obsessed with!), sweetcorn, grass and dandelions. For a treat they get a bit of melon or a grape. Also got a vitamin c supplement for their food/water and some guinea pig nuggets for dried food that's high in vitamin C.
Obviously they're not fed all of that at the same time ;D

Not tried spinach yet, have to get some tomorrow :D

Don't forget tomatoes, Rusty just sticks his teeth in it and runs off with it into his cave, t is so cute lol

He then appears about a half hour later and his wee chin is drenched and has a red tint lol

Will do :D
Toffee likes nabbing cucumber and running off. Scruffy has just realised she can climb up on top of their hut thing (think it's in one of the pics somewhere), she's doing it all the time now ;D Think she must be getting stronger now as she's a lot more athletic than when we first got her when she was a bit shy. They're sisters but Scruffy's so tiny compared to Toffee.

My bunnies love spinach as well.

I gave my hamster a whole grape for the first time yesterday, little man was so excited bless him, he was running about the cage with it in his mouth trying to find somewhere to hide it, but he kept bumping into things due to its size! ;D

Awww they are so sweet, especially when you can cuddle them whilst watching TV!

Haly

Yeah that's particularly nice :D
Earlier when I was cleaning them out, I gave Scruffy a little cuddle and she was very content to snuggle into my jumper. Think she'd have stayed there all day if she'd been able to :D

Toffee is already doing that ;D She won't stay still if you pick her up. Too desperate to explore her surroundings and to have a wander. Right nosey little thing.
Nice to have two guinea pigs with such different personalities :) Get the best of both worlds then.
