View Full Version : Website - What to charge
Doing a simple'ish 5/6 page site for a friend of mine. It's going to be CSS/HTML with fairly basic pages and a gallery page. He's insisting on paying something for it but I've not idea what to charge.
I'm not a site designer, but I can do it to a fairly reasonable standard. Obviously want to do mates rates and all that but I need some idea of a starting point really.

How long is it going to take you do you think? Say a tenner an hour?? :/
Got no idea really. I'm no pro so I'm not the fastest, although I've got a basic page set up already so the main template is 90% done.

I'd ask for £30 if it was a good mate. It does depend on how much time it takes you though.
Be aware that you'll need to make changes as well and that he might want you to then maintain it. Ultimately, you are doing some work for the guy so the charge should reflect the level of responsiblity. I'd say £100 to a freind which would underline the fact that you want to do a proper job and he can and should expect one. HTH :)
Yep, he does want me to do a couple of updates in the year but nothing major. Just updating the gallery with some recent projects.

How good of a friend is he?
Does he have anything that could be of benefit to you favour wise?
I often find favours reap better rewards.

I charge £200 for 'friends' (aka people close to family/friends that you really like/love). As Lozza says, £30 a page is a good deal given that you are still laying stuff out and inputting all the data.

Try looking at one of the content management systems - there's hosting around which supports it. DNN and Joomla are good examples - View it as a good opportunity to learn something about web design I reckon.
Well that went alright last night :)
He popped over and we went through a few things of what he wanted, how many pages etc. Then he asked me about cost. I said that some had said £30pp and others have said more. He's not looked up prices at all but I said that some companies would probably charge at least £4/5/600 pound for the entire site.
Said I'd do it for £100-150 at mates rates and me not being a pro. He said sod off and he'd pay me more than that anyway so I guess I'll just leave it up to him :)
Sounds reasonable to me. Pricing is a pain to get right but you certainly don't want to sell yourself short :)

I'd say Zillions now he has asked for Custom fonts etc :p
To be honest though if you take in the times he will need support etc 300 would be more than fair & it's still half retail ;)
