View Full Version : The Last Remnant
Just browsing the release schedules on Gameplay and saw this is listed as out on 20th November.
Anyone heard much else about the game? I remember seeing a few screenshots a while back from a conference but didn't realise a release date had been announced.
Really, the words RPG and Square made me wonder :p
I've been tracking it for a while. It was due for a simultaneous PS3 / 360 release but the PS3 version slipped and I think Square really wanted to get it out for Christmas.
For some reason it's just failing to excite me though. On paper I've nothing against it but I think the characters and story just look a tad stale and cliche (yeah I know this a jrpg). It does have turn based combat (supposed to be quite similar to LO's system) and has no random encounters however; both are big wins in my book.
Saying all this I will get it next year, maybe before, it's inevitable.

Not been following this at all to be honest, as I don't really seem to be that big a fan of JRPGs. Saying that, if it turns out to be good I'll likely give it a whirl next year when there's a drought and I can pick it up cheap. There's just far too many good games coming out now to really pay attention to this.
The brief write up on the gameplay site didn't enthuse me as much as I thought it would. Can't put my finger on it, it just didn't. So I think I'll wait till there's less games about too.

You very well might get this as a rental review game Jen. Wouldn't surprise me.

Funny thing is I've just been sent a copy by play.tm when I'd already reserved the rights to a review with xboxgamezone for it too ;D
So just got to email the woman in charge there so I don't have two copies as it's unfair on the rest of the team :)
I'm looking forward to your review. I saw this for £17.99 at play.com today and I nearly bit but decided to check out a few forums first. A lot of people are calling it the 360's worst jrpg and it seems to be getting a universal panning.
Yeah it doesn't seem to have gone down too well at all :(
Be interesting to see what it's like. I hope it's not a slog, I keep reviewing games that are a slog and it's getting annoying :p

Looking at a few forum posts it does seem like it could be :( I am a fan of slower turn based combat however and it could work in it's favour. I'm still toying with the idea of grabing a copy anyway as I do seem to like decidedly average rpgs :)
Hurry up and review it ;) I need something new to play!
I'm the same, I tend to quite like RPGs that everyone else hates because they're average ;D
The copy's not here yet :p Only posted out today. For now I need to get on with Spiderman: Web of Shadows which is slowly being written!

I started playing it last friday, i played for about half an hour, but i actually fell asleep on a cut scene, i was tired after work. Pretty bad slowdown on the battles, ill try and get into it properly over xmas.
I did that the other day when I started Fallout 3 ;D What's scary is I was still playing it in my sleep, I'd moved forward
Did that once before with Mario Kart DS too but to be fair, I was really ill at the time.
Bugger it.
Ordered it. It was inevitable; don't know why I fought so hard!

Me three. You and your RPG's.. I swear, you must spend more time with them than your wife! ;).
Lol, she's been encouraging me lately so she can play Fable 2 on the other 360...
Played an hour or so and...
love it.
Well, you knew I'd say this but in my defence: no random encounters (yay), turn based tactical combat (yay), save anywhere (double yay), cliche jrpg hero and story (ya..err..hurah!).
And to add, the reported combat game engine problems haven't been as bad as I expected though this may be down to the fact I've installed it. I did notice slow downs in the opening big battles but since then I've not noticed any problems.
Save anywhere? Excellent :D
I feel more positive about it now from what you've said :)
I had the time this morning to put it in the drive then before it had even started, I had to go out
Hopefully later tonight I can give it a shot.
Just had a very brief play of this.
My first reaction when I saw the battle screen was wtf?! ;D Detailed to say the least ;D
Interesting that you heal after each battle, wondering how much of a challenge it'll make things.
A bit further in and still really enjoying it. I've not played a jrpg with mulitple unions (groups) of characters before and I wasn't sure how I'd find it but so far I'm loving it.
I must also commend the designers for putting in so many touches to make playing easier and more enjoyable; something rpg designers have been guilty of in the past.
When you finish a dungeon there is always a quick way out. Saving anywhere is a god send and there's enough hand holding at the beginning to teach you the ropes. Buy a new weapon and it immediately offers to equip it for you, find some materials one of your party wants and it auto allocates it and if you're going to a dungeon that's supposed to be well known and you get a completed map automatically.
I must say though that now the battles are larger in scale the technical issues are quite noticable and in truth quite unforgivable. I can live with it though but I do hope there's a patch.
So far so good and I'm definately preferring it to Infinite Undiscovery.
I'm really liking it too :) Not had any slowdown yet but you're further along than me.
Definitely much better than I expected though.

I wouldn't bank on a patch. I can't think of an Eastern developed game on console that has received a patch when needed.
