View Full Version : Directx 10 on XP
Probably done a thousand times before but can DX10 be run on XP. I was running Vista but I am building the new rig tonight so I don't know if I should go with the legit XP64 or run Vista64. Performance wise im relatively happy with Vista and I do like some of the benefits DX10 brings but am thinking that XP64 might be the butter option in the long run if I can get DX10 running on it.
Personally i'd rather run Vista64 than XP64 anyway, if it was a choice between XP32 and Vista64 I could see the issue but Vista64 is a much more stable and better supported OS than XP64 is, or will be.
I'm fairly sure DX10 doesn't run in XP but I'd stick with Vista64 anyway, whether it did or didn't.
After much Googling you can hack it a bit to run on XP but as you say Vista is pretty well supported. Should have the new beast built by 8ish tonight. Fallout 3 installed for 8.30.
Happy Days :D
Well I installed xp64 from when Vista was first released. Never had any issues with it at all. However you won't get dx9 on xp. Now Vista has a bit more support..... I'm too lazy to bother reinstalling everything again.

You can hack games to allow things like the 'very high' setting in crysis. This doesn't mean that it's using DX10 though, it just means it is displaying the high res textures that 'very high' offers without DX10 effects.
At present DX10 cripples game performance and offers very little improvement in picture quality. I typically ignore it. Out of Vista64 and XP64 i would say Vista is actually the better OS these days now that SP1 has been released.
