It's a shame the 360 has to miss out on some fantastic looking content though, it's one area consoles really need to find a way to catch up in.
But even say if they could, and a 360 could play the game, access the communities and download the mods/skins/maps onto its hard drive. It would become, well, a PC. ;D
There are plenty of examples of great mods and mapping improving games.
At the end of the day though, can you honestly if you had the choice with all other things equal, say that you wouldn't want to play this (http://www.l4dmods.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12:crossroadsmall&catid=2:news) for example, along with various other already in development maps and skins shown on that site, rather than just the four, fairly limited in size campaigns it comes with?
If it wasn't for the expandability of this game and the fact I know it will get added to, by some now very talented Source mappers/modders (and the fact it was only £20) I would have thought twice about getting it.

Sure they look good, but seldom do they work good. You could mention the really good mods of all time on one hand. It's a lot of fuss and hassle sometimes.

So what you're saying is that it's not a good game in its own right? I don't think that's the case. I get the impression Left 4 Dead for the experience anyway.
I buy any game for the actual content of that game and judge it on its own merits. I would of course like additional content but it will not ever blinker my judgment on what format I would like it on. Any game I buy is for playing with other people and the social experience I get from Xbox Live far outweighs anything I'd get from a mod but can see why someone would like it on the PC.
No, i'm saying it is a very good game but that is very small and if I knew I was going to be limited solely to 4 ~hour long campaigns, i'd have thought twice about spending on it. The same way I get bored of the way everyone on Counter Strike always always always plays dust and office.

(edit - though, having said it's a very good game, there are some niggles getting to me now, such as the awful positional sound.

There is no distinction between something round the next corner to something 15 times the distance away from you, regardless of floors, doors, corners etc.)
edit 2 - in fact, looking back, all I said was it was a shame that consoles don't have the facility for decent mod content. Why are you arguing with that? Surely having mods available is better than not? :/

I think people are forgetting where they are posting & are clicking back into that Defensive mode we All use on Other forums.
Not mentioning no names here but Step back a tad Dude.
I found the demo dull and then bought the game over pos steam and then as predicted the full game was just as dull once we'd gotten through it all.
It is just so boring and repetitive. A week later everyone had forgotten about it. Just another overhyped game, which gamers lap up because it's a 'Valve' game. Rather go and play Dead Rising. It may not be multiplayer but it is a ton of fun.
Even Mr.Whiney below agrees.

Personally I found it a bit daft to suggest it as I made a point of mentioning that I wanted it for the 360. To me, it's the same as if you started a thread asking for recommendations on a new graphics card and I came in and said 'buy a 360'. However I'm sure you had good intentions at heart but it wasn't really answering my question.
The rest of this thread has all turned mountain out of a molehillish which is stupid. PC versus Console debates always turn ridiculous because it all boils down to opinion and is far too subjective for a definitive answer. Personally, play whatever you enjoy most and let others do the same :)
My final say on the matter as I honestly don't want to fuel the fire, just wanted to explain my take on my question as it came up again. :)

Was doing Blood Harvest pistols only earlier and after having taken on 4 tanks and 3 witches and still scraping past, the DAMN SERVER CRASHED LOADING THE LAST MAP. DIE IN THE FACE.
So annoying, took bloody ages to get there :(

I'll be going through the Gears 2 campaign once more on Casual to get all the collectibles, and that may well be it for that as well. Horde is good but like Daz I may trade it now while the value is high and pick it up when it's cheaper in 6 months time.

I've noticed a bug now though, which stops at Tank or Witch in their path. People get it to chase them up a ladder, they get off at the top and stand over the top of the ladder, without getting onto the ladder. The Tank or Witch simply stay underneath, not moving, vunerable to attack.
I hope Valve patch that soon. :(

You'll find that with all of them to be fair, you can almost mindlessly blast your way through then the end set piece you need to organise yourself for, get explosives and flammables placed in good spots, make sure you have easy access to ammo, everyone has good health stocks and weapons etc. else you'll just fail miserably.

Well that was... intense. What a good laugh and with friends it's great.
Game is graphically much more than I was expecting too, and it plays unbelievably well with a joy pad which was my main worry. Can't see expert being beyond the realms of possibility. Not played versus yet, just campaign.
I had an excellent game with Hilly earlier in vs mode. Also expert is very, very difficult.

Just finished the first campaign and I love it :D Reminds me of Counterstrike for some reason, probably because of the engine.

Versus mode is hysterical fun.
The server i've been playing on recently has been set so that voice comms are heard by both teams, which can be hysterical when one or two players don't realise.

Versus mode was better than I was expecting, I wasn't sure how it would work, or whether you would be annoyed when you are Infected and wanting to be Survivors or vice-versa, but whole 1 stage as Survivors and then repeating it as Infected works very well.

If it's anything like the PC version, it's more diluted. Fewer hordes, and fewer zombies overall. The focus is on scoring points off your opponents, e.g. getting boomer bile on them, rather than simply getting to the safe house. It's still the main objective, as you get multipliers if you finish, but it's definately quicker and easier :)
Versus mode (on the PC at least) is fixed at 'Normal' difficulty as far as the number of zombies etc. goes. You used to be able to change it but unless you had good teams, it was a piss take on Advanced.
Only problem that leaves is that rushing is about the best tactic. If you absolutely leg it through the levels you do far better than going slowly and trying to fight.
I find it takes about the same amount of time as a campaign usually, as although each run through takes less time than a campaign would, you're effectively doing the whole thing twice.

It's actually twice as long :p. You do the whole campaign as Infected AND Survivors.

Just went through a campaign trying to get a couple of Witch achievements and ended up getting Stomach Upset (Go through a campaign with no Survivor getting vomitted on). No idea how we managed that!
I went through a campaign the other day without disturbing the witch. Didn't get the achievement. :( At the end it did say that one of the computer players had done 13 hit points to the witch - so presumably that counted as disturbing her even though she never actually came after us.
Edit: And I only need 30 more kills on the minigun for that achievement too. :)

Christ that was difficult. I had another couple of goes after everyone left and only managed to get as far as the church. Unfortunately the CPU players seem to like wandering into fire a bit too much so they all incapped themselves. :(
Least we know what we're up against now, totally unprepared for how hard that was :/

I reckon if we're going to try that we need to make sure we've got 4 players and probably a 4-5 hour time slot we can all make. We were at it for about 2 1/2 hours last night and couldn't even get past act 3 :/
I think you need to perhaps step up to it, going through advanced first, and really know your level. We just sort of fell into it without any real plans to see how well we'd do.

I thought we did ok considering how unprepared we were for it. A plan is definitely needed though. Staying out of each others line of fire is essential though, especially if I'm carrying the auto shotgun. I think I killed Barfmit with one shot of that :D

Advanced is too easy. Expert is where it's at, the tank is properly fearsome then and the witch is just unstoppable if she's after you. :D
Unbelievably, Daz got away from her after she went after him on Expert the other day. Admittedly she was on fire and the rest of us were chasing her, but still a good achievement!
On Expert, the standard infected are so much more of a threat too. 10 health with each hit. :shocked:

Yeah, right at the start of chapter 3 in the train yard. Just ran backwards away from her and managed not to hit anything, very lucky!

Yep, and the tank is an instant incap whatever your health is.
We had a round not long ago when we we're doing ace, good health, good weapons, en route to the safe room and then we come across a witch. We do our best to avoid, but in a big horde the ensuing chaos disturbs her and she swipes one of us, killing him and also making him fly across the forest like a ragdoll. ;D We lick our wounds and limp to the safe room. What's waiting just by it? A tank. No molotovs, no firecans. We were all steamrollered. They completely turn the game around when they're triggered.

I killed her on my own on Expert without taking a single bit of damage. :p
Don't ask me how I did it though, I honestly have no idea. I fired two shots from the auto shotgun as I fell down a ladder, and she died. Wasn't complaining though :D
Can't speak for the 360 version, but on the PC there's a known bug that specials (probably commons too) get stuck on the ladder if you stand at the top of it. Quite funny to watch a 7st Zoey keeping a 50st Tank at bay with her feet. :D

Anyone up for a spot of achievement whoring, maybe after we've mastered the expert levels? It's impossible to get the one for single-handedly killing the tank in single-player mode as everyone piles in and gets some shots off. In multi, it might be possible for everyone to get the achievement in one game provided everyone decides whose turn it is. On easy it only takes about 10-12 direct shotgun blasts to floor him. :)
I actually attempted that last night after the rescue vehicle arrives and the AI gets onboard - you're left on your own with everything and it is doable then but I ended up either wandering into the path of the AI's fire, or getting overwhelmed by all the infected in combination with the tank and dying, even on easy :/
Up for that though yeah, some old fashioned whorage :) How did you manage to headshot the Witch btw?

Yeah, I got the cr0wned achievement. She was right in the direct path so unavoidable, and I just gave it a go. I also played through Death Toll three times last night trying to get the no-healing achievement, the 'no-one gets barfed on' achievement and the one for avoiding the witch. Got the the latter on the third attempt!
Do revives count as being healed do you know? Oh, and what gun did you use on the Witch? :)
From an achievement guide I read on x360a, reviving doesn't count as healing :) Was trying for it last night with AI but stupid AI went and healed me right at the very end of the entire campaign and I couldn't get away.
Always keep a med-pack with you, if you switch to it they'll stop healing you :) That's my plan anyway!
Not sure why I didn't then, it was my second attempt on something and all went a bit wrong. For the vast majority of it, I had a med-pack though :/ Really pissed me off after all that time ;D
I don't think you can heal with either health kits or pills. If you're incapped you get a token amount of temporary health but it's barely worth proceeding after that. A couple of times I've reached the boathouse with just over 50 health, and after a couple more hits someone heals you, despite my best efforts to stop it. On a couple of other goes, I was barely hit at all except for one hit from the Tank, which did enough to require some healing. It's annoying when you get to part 4 with 80+ and take that hit, especially if you don't get injured after that either.
Just used the standard shotty I think. Walked right up to her and pulled the trigger. I'm guessing exactly how many hit points you do is down to the collision detection, and some luck may be involved. Another time after that I did exactly the same but it took a further two shots to down her.
Edit: I tried the medpack thing. It only puts them off briefly as far as I can tell.

Still haven't played Blood Harvest. Struggled my way through Dead Air with my sister in split screen last night though....
Just got the Unbreakable achievement. Took me so many attempts I now have 20,000 zombie kills to my name! Only 33-odd thousand to go...

Yeah, and what's more interesting is how it happened. I was going after that achievement, and the one for no friendly fire, and finished the first section with about 95 health. On each of the next three sections I got hit by a hunter (not pounced) but didn't get touched by the standard infected, so by the time I reached the standoff I had 65 health (10 off for each hit). I don't think I'd ever been hit by a hunter before then.
As we finished off the last Tank a smoker grabbed me from the boathouse roof and the idiot AI just stood there while I took another 30 hit points (down to 35). Instantly Francis tried to heal me so I had to put him off, and it was then I realised the horn from the boat was going off! As I jumped from the balcony there was another Hunter and a Boomer so I had to finish them off, and just about limped to the boat before the Horde arrived. Sadly Bill never made it. I've no idea why but the AI seems to have real difficulty getting out the boathouse and prefers to leave via the window, so by the time you're at the boat you can see at least a couple of them crawling about trying to get out.
Anyway, it was pretty heart-pounding stuff at the end!

I reckon there should be - me and slinky/widejustin3000 tried to play a campaign a couple of weeks back and had a random join us then a few moments later random's guest was in the game too :o

Glad to hear it! There's a games night next thursday with L4D currently leading the voting, so it looks like it could be that for a night when you can definitely get some action with the BD lot, though I'm sure the many L4D owners hear will be up for it.

A general observation, possibly a little too much thought in it buuut....
Left 4 Dead. The piccie on the front. Either the designers are being very clever or I'm reading too much into it buuut.
It's a "Left" hand. It has "4" fingers on it. And judging by the lackage of thumb, it's obviously a "Dead" persons hand.

Yeah, it's a very good visual representation of the title on the cover, the title works well as the story of the game too and the 4 also stands for the 4 player co-op it's based around.
You really did think that through a lot ;D
It took me a couple of days to spot they'd left the thumb off, but seconds later I realised it was completely intentional and just a further play on the title. I'm guessing the entire game is based on the initial conception of the title, but because they realised it was a bit Steven Seagal cheesey they chose to theme the game in the same cheesey movie title style (Death Toll etc.). If it was called Left 4 Dead and was just a straightforward zombie shooter it would come across a bit B-movie, but they've cleverly made it tongue-in-cheek with a couple of flourishes..
I got this today, not sure if Iain is wanting it enough for me to give him it as a birthday present so might play it tonight. I might get too scared though, as I'm a big wuss, and have to turn it off :(

Playing Left 4 Dead with Iain on co-op. It's awesome (as everyone obviously knows, but I'm a bit behing the times!!). Will have to join you lot at some point :)
Survivor mode looks fun (http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/959/959549p1.html). Apparently designed for shorter, 10 minute-ish stints. Well, when I say 'ish':
How furious is it? Consider this: In all of the play testing that the Valve designers have done while creating this mode, none of them have ever survived past the 10 minute mark. We're told the company best so far was about nine minutes, with a team of elite players battling like crazy to keep one another alive. Our experience at Valve averaged around three or four minutes a round, but they're like the fastest three or four minutes of your life.
And well, when I say fun:
What makes it so challenging is that the Survival mode doesn't waste time building up. After the initial wave of zombies you'll start getting hit by waves of special zombies; these are the hunters, smokers, boomers, and tanks. You'll get multiples of them at a time; I often saw two or three hunters or smokers leaping around the battle while the mindless horde minions were everywhere. In one battle, we had the tank, a boomer, a couple of smokers, and a hunter hitting us at the same time. We're told it's even possible to get two tanks at the same time, a prospect that seems both ludicrously unfair and hilarious at the same time.

There is one entirely brand-new level in the DLC called Lighthouse which the designers say may be the toughest level of them all.

You know the achievement of killing witchy witch with a single headshot... how do you achieve that?!? I think we were playing on easy... if not normal mode and I had a perfect headshot on the little monkey... and did she die?! Nooooooo! Did she rip me to shreds instead?! Yusssss! ;D
Picky reckons someone else has to get her health down loads and then another person takes a headshot?
Annoying me it is :p

I have to admit, it does make me laugh when she realises someones there disturbing her sobbing and starts wavering whilst going "AoOWAGHhOoorrrr....AOrRERAaaGHhGRhrhoORrrr" before the psycho charge and flailing... it reminds me of of the reaction I give when I'm on a diet and Picky brings in the nawty box of chocs and goodies and begins munching them next to me on the sofa ;D
We've never killed the witch with one shot on Expert mode yet. Bloody useless if you don't have 4 humans though. The bots rattle on about "Don't disturb the witch! Lights off!" but recently Bill charged over and clobbered a box next to her (for some reason?!) and the rejoined the group. This pissed her off and Bill lasted about 2 seconds before he was a corpse. The wailing witch distracts us and the rest of us get vomited on, and with two of us on black and white, it was just over. DAMN YOU BILL.

I seem to be able to do this every time, even on Expert. So much so that I don't bother creeping round her any more, just charge in and start blasting before she gets up! I concur that it pays to aim lower than the top of the head.
BTW - lights don't affect the witch, so don't bother blinding yourself by turning them off, you don't need to.

That's excellent! Some of those photos are absolutely brilliant.
I was discussing the idea of somebody doing a Left 4 Dead movie at some point. Using real actors wouldn't cut it IMO, it would need to be CGI (identical to the intro/demo movie at the beginning) Storyline the same as the game, but with an overriding objective seperate to the game, just to add a bit of depth. Perhaps getting out the country/state before its nuked (there's hints to the military planning to nuke on the walls in the safe rooms) I'm sure a good writer could come up with something. :)

Got round to downloading L4D last week.. I have to say it's a bit dissapointing or am I missing the plot? Ressembles an arcade game you find lurking in the dark corner of a bowling ally.

If you're not playing it with mates Huddy then I think it loses a lot of its appeal. It really is awesome with a good team all talking and helping each other.
DLC for PC landed last night for the UK, had a good play till about 3am. ;D
It's really good and poor at the same time to be honest. It's free, so it's always in the back of your mind that you can't whinge too much, but it just doesn't feel as polished and complete as the main game did. There's really obvious bugs that should have been spotted and resolved before now.
A bug that should have been spotted is after 14 minutes, sometimes the Tanks simply stop. They're supposed to be pouring out at this stage but many players have noted that they recieved none after that point. Anybody who's played the finales will know every special apart from the tank can be shot down by the group very quickly, whereas the Tank can split you up and basically trash your defensive position. So after the Tanks give up for good it's very easy to survive for ages (record on the L4D Forums is just over an hour) You just hunker down in the room with the ammo pile and constantly reel off bullets at the doorways.
Another large bug is people watching the demos of other people during Survivor mode inherit their score if they watch it start to finish. I suspect Valve will fix that but the point is something like that shouldn't have slipped through the net, even on a free update surely? No wonder some players have said they'd rather have not had the update if they knew their personal scores were so easily lost. You don't want a "fake" score constantly above your own, in the case of the 1 hour demo you're own scores will always fall short and you'll have no real idea how you're doing and what your *own* record is. There's a couple more bugs such as Hunters getting stuck on the Terminal map really easily and little things like the dialogue being inconsistent with what's actually happening. Such as igniting the fire cans to burn down a barricade on Dead Air. This triggers a horde and in campaign mode they exclaim the danger is over after a certain time. In Survivor mode the escape backfires or fails and the survivors are left to fight to the death, but the dialogue ignores that fact. "The path is clear" and "Let's go!" is shouted around even though the barricade is totally blocked still and you're in the middle of a horde.
Boomers seem to explode randomly even more now. There's always been some poor spawns by the director where the Boomer instantly falls off a roof as he spawns and just explodes at the bottom but in Survivor mode it's even more common. Almost every time we triggered the start of the Lighthouse mode you'd see and hear the Boomers exploding in the distance. Did Valve not notice this and not pick better spots to spawn them? They're only minor things but it just looks untidy, like Valve have hacked the code together to get this mode working, rather than build it up properly. I'd rather of them spent a bit more time getting it to the same standard as the rest of the game and releasing it in a few months with the SDK rather than seemingly rushing it to their "deadline" They didn't promise it for the 21st, that was just the expected date, and it is free after all, so Valve didn't really need to answer to anybody, despite the number of nerds of the Steam forums going crazy because it was well into the 21st in their timezone and they hadn't recieved it yet. :rolleyes:
Hopefully they'll iron it out, but despite those problems it's still a hell of a lot of fun. It stays true to the rest of the game where teamwork is essential and tactical use of firecans and cannisters are heavily recommended if you want to see through more than 5 minutes. Multiple smokers and hunters mean you're constantly vunerable and this drives home the aspect of defending each other in order to stay on your feet and fight them off. Letting a team mates fall to save your own items and health means within moments you'll be picked off and won't have anybody else to help you out. As with the rest of the game the teamwork aspect makes for some rewarding battles. :)
