View Full Version : Mattresses?
Anyone know how firm foam mattresses are? I need a new one, and I've "discovered" that foam ones come rolled up, so I can easily collect from courier depot. But how firm are they compared to sprung ones?
Ta :)
I'm interested to know, we need a new mattress. Zem will globber no more.
I stayed in a hotel in Munich (I think) and the bed had a foam mattress. It was so soft that when I sat on the bed I thought my arse was going to hit the floor whilst having the mattress touching my ears. I changed rooms.
Like all mattresses, there's soft and there's firm. It's all down to the construction and (particularly in the case of a hotel) how much abuse it gets.
Generally, the old adage still applies. You usually get what you pay for. If you get a good one, they can outlast a sprung mattress. Get a cheapy and it'll turn to mush. I'd suggest that any mattress that can be rolled up is likely to be of the latter variety.
Bear in mind that foam tends to retain heat much better than the air inside a sprung mattress. If you get hot in bed, you might want to make alternative arrangements. :)

Dang it, that's a non-starter for me then :(
This is the one I was looking at:

Well, I'm surprised that Silentnight roll their mattresses like that, but it's not a cheapy so should at least in theory be reasonably good quality. The memory foam layer will reduce firmness a touch (it always does).
Unless it has internal ventilation however it'll still retain heat. :(
I've got a memory foam mattress and i love it, but it definitely is a very personal thing. In my case, it's extremely handy for it to retain heat as I have a very cold bedroom so every little helps in the Winter months despite being a mostly 'warm' person.
I find it very comfortable but it does depend what you like in a mattress :)
That post was probably completely useless to you as essentially I said it all depends on what you like ;D
Nope :) You've reiterated the heat retention thing.
Think I need to start again on this ;D
There is a matress guy down Moulsham Street that you should look at. I think its on the right heading from parkway. The shop is tired but his prices are damn good. We have got my matress and my sisters from there.
I've tried foam mattresses - didn't get on with them. If you edging towards 100kg+ unless you get a super firm foam one, it just won't cope with you.
Pocketsprung mattresses are still the best in my eyes - the high density one, i.e. one with over 1000 springs. But they cost money.

Think you've mentioned them before. Wandered down that way a while back but didn't see them, will have to try again!
Agreed Will, but yeah, costa £££
Memory foam toppers are OK for heat retention - it's the solid foam mattresses that cause the problems. They're good for keeping the bugs at bay but not so good if you regularly get hot and sweaty (they tend to er, rot :().
I'll agree with Will. As bedding goes, best £1,000 I think I've spent (though stepping up from a single to a double has helped too).

We have on order a combination mattress with a pocketspring section at the bottom and a memory foam slice on top, it gives the best of both worlds and was the most comfortable one we tried apart from a £3000 superdooper memory foam one, it was only slightly less comfortable and only for little reasons like the memory foam one gives support right up to the edge, although this is a little disconcerting anyway because you don't realise you're about to roll out of bed. We paid about £1000 for a zip and link version because we can't get a Superking size up our stairs without having to bend it. Can't wait for it to be delievered :)

You can get edge-to-edge support versions of the combined spring/foam mattresses. In fact, I insisted on it when I got mine (2,000 pocket spring, 3in memory foam, from Dreams) because I tend to collapse the edges of mattresses. You're not supposed to sit on the edges but everyone does.

Out of interest, do you have a link to the type you've gone with?
If it helps any, I can offer a link to the one I got:

Just ordered a mattress from the bed shop, moulsham street :)
Felt a bit sorry for the bloke as he didn't open til 10 today as he was writing out the sale prices, then I waltzed in, and the one he recommended was £100 over my budget and after some deliberation he knocked it down to my budget ;D
Only downside is delivery in 2 weeks, but at least it's a timed delivery and it's free :)
Thanks Z for the recommendation :)
Got it today. Ok it was 3 weeks, but it came in during the week and today was the only time I was in. Not unwrapped it yet, but looking forward to a snooze :D
Parents passed me down their memory foam pillows when they got some new ones, they are so good at remembering their shape it's like it doesn't move... oh wait it doesn't. Slept on softer floors :(
That doesn't sound right at all. You sure it's memory foam and not just ordinary foam?
I never got on with a memory foam mattress but my mate has one that's a conventional sprung mattress but the top layer is memory foam, and I sleep like rumplestiltskin in it. You know, the dude with the beard?
Yup - same as me (well, same as I think I'd be anyway).
If I may hijack, has anyone used a latex one before? My own rather cheap mattress is getting to the stage where I can feel springs and there is a rather cheap dunlopillo diamond latex thing going at work. Apparently it was £800 new, 2 years old but only in a spare bedroom and now £50.
