We bough a new super king size bed last year but the matress is a bit on the hard side, and I've not been sleeping too well. Anyway, we tought we might get a memory foam topper.
Do any of you have one? Are they as good as they sound?
This one's only £200. (http://www.duvetandpillowwarehouse.co.uk/product/20/61/1137/Memory%20Foam/Luxury%207cm%20Topper)
Also, does anyone know if there is any differecve between the 4gb and 7gb memory foam.. Opps sorry course of habbit- 4cm and 7cm, apart from the 3cm :D
We have a memory foam topper over a pocket sprung bed and it's the ideal compromise IMO. We found a full memory foam bed to be too "enveloping".
£200 seems expensive to me though.

do you have a 4cm or thicker?
do you have a 4cm or thicker?
That sounds about right I think.

what the 4cm or thicker :p
LOL - it's around 4cm I reckon. The only issue is that combined with a really thick quilt and soft cotton sheets, it's really difficult to get out of bed :)

Loads of good info here, our new memory foam topped pocket sprung mattress should be here next week :)
Although you need to make sure its a good quality memory foam you don't need to spend £200!

They all seem to be around £200 if not more. Remembering this is super king size.
Actually, the 5cm is cheaper :

Is that any good?

Looking around you seem to be right about the price, you want the the most dense foam available as this means the best quality, that thread I pointed you at on MSE has a lot of information about both mattresses and toppers, Yanis seems like a reputable brand from what I have seen but there are loads of others, byy all accounts a lot of the stuff is produced in the same factory and rebranded but still look for the heavier foams as they are better.

Surely the density of the foam simply means it can take more load and consequenty, this will affect the necessary thickness?
I've tried out the Tempur memory foam mattresses and it seems that the only difference between the thicker ones and the thinner ones (apart from price!) is how soft they feel, or how "sinkable" they are.

Nope :)
1. Weight (Density in pounds per square foot):
- The weight of a foam is determined by the amount of chemicals used in the composition of the polyurethane foam. The more chemicals, the higher the density and the more visco-elastic it will become. This density will not determine the hardness of the material, this is done through utilizing the ILD rating structure. Many memory foam mattresses use a 4 and 5lb. density, but some use as low as 2 and 3lb. densities.
2. ILD Rating (Indentation Load Deflection):
- The ILD rating is going to tell you how hard or soft a material is. The 25% ILD rating is the number of pounds required to achieve a 25% compression of a 4" thick foam using a 50 square inch indentation. An Example of this is as follows: 20lb. ILD foam indicates that this material took 20 lbs. of pressure to indent this foam 25%. Keep in mind that the higher the ILD, the firmer the foam.

If you have a Costco card they sell decent ones there, thats where I got mine from for less than £150.
Its lovely, but if you're a hot person it'll take a bit of getting used to.

I'm hot baby yeah!
lol then you'll be smokin'! You'll get used to it but there'll be a few nights where you'll chuck the duvet off and think 'who's idea was this?!' :D
Nope :) MB
It doesn't surprise me that there's another metric involved but generally speaking, the density is going to affect the necessary thickness and isn't necessarily a one-to-one relation to quality depending on what you mean by "quality". I have plenty of examples of memory foam in my armoured jeans and various bike gear and it's lightweight and thin. It does seem very dense as well.
If you try out the various Tempur beds, the salesman explains that the only difference between them, other than the price, is the thickness of the foam and the required thickness depends on personal preference and the weight of the person. I'm pretty sure they even do dual-thickness versions for couples who require differnt levels of support.
We sell ones at Dunelm Mill if you can get yourself to a store. For a King size bed it's £120 IIRC.
The manager has one and she loves it! I've been at her house an napped on it before going out once and it's awesome!

Yes, QVC. If you avoid the countless jewellery and beauty hours, some decent stuff does turn up occasionally. :o
Anyway, can't comment on quality of those items so YMMV. I've got a pocket sprung mattress with a memory foam topper, and a feather topper on top of that. When I'm not suffering from insomnia I sleep rather well, but it certainly makes for an interesting experience trying to get up. ;D
