I turned it off because I was getting fed up of the slowdown. By the time it had finished backing up it would start again and I'm pretty damn sure its causing a lot of slowdown on my system. So I turned it on and its been preparing for 24hrs now.

Tried turning it off, blatting the preferences file and turning it back on again?

(/library/preferences/com.apple.timemachine.plist)

I did the off/on thing a few days ago because it wasn't backing up then, just preparing. Isn't there a chance that if I delete the prefs file it will have to start over again? I don't fancy doing another 600/700gb backup again.

I don't know Pete, I'd expect it to scan the current backup files and just add to them, I think the details are all stored on the actual drive rather than in the preferences.

Alex - :p :)

The whole 'it just works' thing is true to some extent, but it's far from how things always go.

Deleting the prefs shouldn't necessitate a full 700Gb backup, I believe all the information about backups done and what not is stored in the TM volume not preferences.

I guess the obvious thing is to rename the prefs file and see what happens. Oh and it just worked :p Now its just preparing to work :p
