What VOIP

I was thinking of setting up a voip between my office and the IT office in Holland and was wondering what experiece you guys have of creating your own voip. I wsa thinking something software based, possibly YATE or something similar.

Asterisk is the only one on my radar, I know people who use it (on embedded devices actually (a router and something else, cant remember), quite cool by all accounts) though I have no experience myself. Packages for/in most of the big distros.
