I need to run a network cable outside, does anyone know of a shop that will just sell a reel of network cable? That way I only need a small hole and then crimp the ends.
checked scan, red, green, and blue ![]() Ideally either black or brown to run up the brickwork outside. edit:- found some dotted around. The plan is to get a 30m length and then cut off the ends & put new on. Should be long enough Last edited by Zirax; 21-04-2008 at 22:44. |

Remember to wrap it in something protective - UV will kill Cat5 in no time sadly.
I used a length of hose cabletied at the top and bottom - worked great. ![]()

Your best bet is to run it through a narrow drain pipe so that it is protected and then it doesn't matter about colour.

Thanks all, when I get back I will take a look. I had totally forgotten about the UV and network cables. Before I had just thrown the cable outside without any issues. James, this time its to go from downstairs to upstairs, was trying to minimise cables running around the house. Last time I was in Kidderminster where I had the cable string between two windows to hook up next door.
May take you up on those cables, I'll work out the route properly now |

I've had a long run of cat 5 cable around the side of my house for years and years with no problems due to UV. No problems at all in fact.

That makes sense. Outside is definitely an advantage, wired up my a house and flat internally and it can be a nightmare. Had to take a chisel to one door to get the cable in under the carpet.

I'm with feek on this, we've had two CAT5 cables around the outside of the house back home, and i've never had a peep out of them. They've been there for about 10 years
