Default Crap.... that was slightly scary.

So... things to watch out for when buying a 24 year old Porsche 911 Turbo for the engine and gearbox.

1) you have a trailer that will fit it.
2) if you don't have a trailer to fit... ensure the brakes are not worn down to the minimum, the clutch is not shot, the rear tyres don't have canvas showing and it's not made from rust...

If you fail at both of the above. I AIN'T BLOODY DRIVING IT!

It may have only been for 40 miles.... but that was the most terrifying thing I've ever had to do.

330bhp and rear wheel drive tail happy car with bald tyres on greasy roads with almost no brakes.

Soon my pulse will slow down and my sphincter will relax....

If he asks me to pick up a car with him again I think the answer will be NO! Hell no! NO NO NO NO NO!

Engine and gearbox are destined to go into a kit car - so at least I will be allowed to have a go at the remains with a saw and sledgehammer to help me relax.

The biggest issue was the clutch was shagged. It was either engaged or disengaged - nothing inbetween. Which made pulling away a little interesting - 2500-3000rpm and then dump the clutch in a car with literally no grip.

It makes me tense up just thinking about it again. The car was a total deathtrap. I want to know where it got it's MOT from? Especially as it was dated from the beginning of the month.

At least it had lights that worked I suppose so I could see what I was likely to crash into.

I remember picking up a bike that had a digital clutch (on/off). Every time I set off from the lights it would wheelie - how I got home without getting pulled I'll never know.

Another funny thing was that on that first ride to pick the thing up a car driver did something stupid and, as a biker and knowing to always cover my horn (*), I gave him a quick blast. Trouble is, it really was a blast - the lunatic previous owner had fitted air horns to the bloody thing. So when I pressed the horn this tiny 400cc V4 race rep let out a sound like an articulated tractor unit - scared me and the car driver witless

My old 1100 also had a binary clutch. The escaped lunatic who had owned it before me had done an awfully long list of mods to the thing.
