Embarrassed to ask..
.. but have to check.
I have a laptop that needs new memory. According to the website, it will take the maximum of 2GB of PC2-4200. I take it this will be fine with 2GB of PC2-5300? Cheers.

It *should* be fine, but it'll run at a slower speed than it is capable of.

I've never owned a laptop so don't take my word as gospel but, when upgrading a PCs ram all that really matters is what version it is, ie SD, DDR, DDR2. The motherboard simply runs the ram at the same speed as the slowest bit attached so in your case it should take the 5300 and treat it as 4200.
So yeah, i reckon it'll work, and if you're buying online and it doesn't just use the good ol distance selling act.

Just for clarification, as that read to me like you could have meant the laptop will run slower too, which it shouldn't do.
