Default VLC not pushing dialogue through the 5.1 settings

So, I've got a 5.1 system running through the optical cable of my Audigy 4 pro but VLC plays the dialogue of video at a level you just can't hear.
I have to change VLC to 2 front 2 rear in order to hear what people are saying.

Does anybody know what might cause this? I've got Win7 configured to 5.1

Given how new Win7 is, it might just be a VLC incompatibility, but I'd go with Desmo's suggestion. If Windows Media Player won't play it, try Media Player Classic.

codec wise, i've got CCC installed - which i generally regard as all you need codec wise.
i'll try media player classic... and then WMP if i really have to.

thanks.

I had a bit of fun installing it all, do you have AC3Filter installed?

As its outputting through your optical I presume you are outputting as an AC3 stream?

I use MPC HC and it works quite nicely.

I think I used this tutorial - it's for outputting audio over HDMI but the same should apply for your optical out settings, I think

Hm. Have you tried the speaker test to ensure all speakers are working and that it isn't the receiver?

Lol

Tricky one - I had a problem with Win7 in that the 'latest' drivers disabled the AC3 passthrough, so everything was being mixed to Stereo, once I rolled back the drivers, it worked perfectly. (Nvidia Ion chipset though, so different).

Sorry I can't be more use - I remember it required a bit of fiddling to get it all working properly but now it does...that's about it really, I'll see if I can find the settings when I get home and will post them up
