Nah they'll hate me for that, people are so entrenched in their sodding ways. I've tried all this in the past, but its worthless even trying to explain to them. Worst case scenario is i'll run anti spyware and virus removal, and delete most random stuff, fully update everything and disable as much as possible then hope that windows still boots nicely. If it doesn't then i'll tell them spyware broke it and it needs a reinstall

I must add it depresses me though that people just click install on EVERYTHING and don't seem to engage their brain for one second? Maybe i'm being harsh but it really isn't that hard is it?

No, not really. I shake my head at it, too.

I would explain that they have two options, you fix the laptop by nuking it (after saving their work) or give it back to them as it is. A sticking plaster on a gaping wound is a waste of everyones time

This. Fixing one minor hole is one thing (done that with my Dad's PC). Fixing the entire cavalry is another. Nuke or don't bother.

Bloody hell!
This machine doesn't have that many processes running and I've got 3 Chrome windows with 15-20ish tabs in each at the moment and a couple of word documents open and some of my research notes and paint shop pro...

I'd give combofix a go and see what it can do
