Yay, I'm all switched up !

It's not new and it's not fantastic but I've got a decent switch at last. Managed, big, reasonably intelligent and with lots of flashy lights, it's a lot better than the nasty cheap heap of junk I bought from Scan about 8 years ago.

I wish you had mentioned it to me. I currently need to dispose of two 16 port rack mountable switches, a 5 port and a few others. I also have the worlds supply of half inched network cable too.

Heh, I got it from work and 8 ports (my wireless router has another 4 if I get desperate) is plenty for me so I didn't need anything bigger or better.

Just curious as to what benefit being managed brings (in the general sense, not this specific case).

So he can do things with it if he wants to. QoS, VLANs, Filtering, routing etc... or any other advanced features managed switches offer.

jinks I could be interested in one if they're going. Currently collecting bits for my new network. I have a cab, RJ45 patch panel, RJ11 patch panel, and UPS. I lack a rack mount switch and I'm going to hopefully get a good deal on a 1U server from Dell to top it off.

Thought it'd be something like that. Managed switches are one of the few bits of networking kit I've not encountered before (though obviously I've heard of them before).
