That happens when I find out that someone I fancy smokes. Instant turn off. I can't help it.

Sometimes views or beliefs are too strong to be ignored.

I was about to say that I don't think religion would put me off someone because I'm really not religious in the slightest. However, if I found someone who was really into their religion and started trying to force their views on me, that'd be the end of it.

Similarly, if Leon tried to purchase a chavved up Clio.... I'd have to seriously re-think our relationship

Ditto. Totally non negotiable and I think even if that person quit smoking there and then I still wouldn't change my mind.

I basically agree again Kate, although maybe not 100% on the smoking, but its a big downer when i'm with a girl i'm getting on really well with, and then she decides shes needs to go out for a smoke break or something. I think you can physically see my face drop. Depending on how drunk i am usually (

) or how good we get on, its slightly negotiable, i shouldn't but i also feel like a pr**k for thinking like that too...

I don't think religion would particularly bother me if I fancied someone until and unless they tried to force me to believe in the same. I'll respect peoples right to believe in anything provided they respect my own and others right to believe in nothing or the complete opposite i.e. they will not either disrespect or try to hurt them for an opposite belief, whatever it may be. I don't mind a debate on religion but someones right to preach to me stops when I say "sorry, not interested thanks" and likewise I'd try never to preach my views at someone after they said the equivalent.

Conversely views on race are much more likely to be a deal breaker to me. Smoking is also usually a turn off although I could probably look past it, however having had two grandfathers and an uncle die of smoking related diseases then it wouldn't be something I was particularly happy about.

Can I just say, me too. Smoking is also an instant turn off for me I'm afraid (no offence to our resident smokers here). Religion isn't provided it's not rammed down my throat (heck I've even been to church once or twice myself recently).

Girlfriend was made to attend some strange Church thing at the weekend. Learning about Forgiveness or something. She didn't really want to go, but her parents are quite religious and they'd booked her onto it (at cost), so she went along.

I'm /not/ religious in the slightest, so several of the things she said they talked about annoyed me and we had a night-long debate about it all and when I posted I was thinking "oh God [pardon the pun] I can't live with this stuff". You know how these Latin Americans praise God for everything

Fortunately I discovered my gf isn't as religious as her parents which is good. She's now thinking for herself I suppose, so I enjoy challenging her...she tried challenging me too, so it was good fun in the end. When she came out with the religious cliches (eg only God is perfect), I ended up laughing to which she just sighed

In the end we agreed to disagree - actually had a really good debate

I was also reminded of a time when my mum got into a religious debate with one of her friends (also religious, another faith though) who made a slightly off comment, and they didn't get on well again for a while after that

It's just strange - religion is one of those things where people have beliefs they make so personal and will believe at any cost. Their right I suppose, just like as people say here, smoking....people can choose to do it but it ain't for me, so as long as they don't do it around me, that's ok.
