Default Night Watch

Wow.

I bought this the other weekend as it was on cheap in HMV having heard a few people say it was good, but didn't really know quite what to expect.
Wow.

It is very dark and rather strange, an interesting take on the Good mythological creatures vs Bad mythological creatures. Its a russian film, but the english overdub works fine with it. Really baffled me when I first started watching it as I didn't realise the default language was Russian. The intro bit was done in English, and when the start of the story after that was in Russian I assumed it was just setting the scene and all would become clear.. a few minutes later I engaged my brain

It's the first part of a trilogy, based on the novels written by Sergei Lukyanenko, the second part was released this year called Day Watch, with the third due to be filmed soon.

Stealing the blurb from wiki:

In the medieval set prologue, humans with extra powers are called Others. The Others as either proponents of light or dark confront each other to do battle. Gessar, lord of light, realises that the two forces are evenly matched and both will be destroyed. In parley with Zavulon, general of dark, the two agree to a truce in which the light will form a Night Watch and the dark a Day Watch to maintain the balance before the coming of the Great One who will choose either Light or Dark and thereby bring one to prominence.

If you haven't seen it, I'd highly recommend watching it.

Sounds like my container of Camellia sinensis. Must pop along HMV when I head into town next.

Sounds interesting although I must admit I automatically thought "Pratchett"

Another big thumbs up for the film. Went to watch it when it was released a couple of years back. Feeder on the soundtrack as well

You can watch the film with English dubbing but to me it sounds wrong. Watch it in Russian just for the english subtitles which aren't just plonked on top but become part of the film!

Its very good. Make sure you watch Night Watch before Day Watch which is doing the rounds at the moment.

I thought the concept was excellent and have seen the film twice, I particularly like the 'owl' he's given.

I like foreign fantasy movies and books because they often follow a different route to the western stories which we are familiar with and are often a rehash of the same thing over and over again, this is the reason I like anime too, its new and different.
