Question RE: Income Tax.
Right, so I started my new job 3 weeks ago and have just been paid yet no tax was taken from my packet...
I was expecting to get taxed from the get up and go. It has been suggested to me that because I haven't been working since the beginning of the tax year until now that between now and april I will not have earnt over the £5220 tax free barrier so do not have to pay any. Is this correct? or is it likely that I'll get taxed on this money next month? Just want to know roughly where I stand with the extra money that I've got here. Cheers Matt

You'll probably be taxed pro rata then have to claim it back. In other words, they'll take a percentage tax as if you'd been earning the same wage all year, but you can prove you weren't earning for the past nine months and hence haven't passed the magic barrier. I've had to do it a couple of times and you just need to say 'This is what you owe me, and here's why'. Then a lovely cheque finds its way to you, probably in the next 27-28 weeks. :/

You wont make it all the way up to the magic barrier without paying any tax, its a bitch I wont ask how much you got paid, but I assume you didnt pay any NI contributions either?
Can I ask what your tax code is? |

I'm not entirely sure how I prove it though, what documents will I need for that?
Well I guess I'll have to wait and see what next month brings *plans overtime to take him close to his limit* Betty - I made £64 NI contributions and my tax code is 522L I got paid £1022 before deductions (£958 after) for the 10 days of work I did this month. (I know you didn't ask, probably out of politeness but I don't mind people being rude )
