Firewall for X64?
Just discovered that Zonealarm doesn't work with windows x64. I gotten hold of outpost but is there anything else that I should be looking at?

I've not used a software firewall for years but instead rely on the hardware one in my router - Not an option?

Of course. I have the one on the router, I've just always used a software one on top. Just old habit really

Is this Vista x64 or XP x64?
Comodo will work on either. http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/overview.html |

I've always just used the router + Windows firewall combo, never had any problems.

Windows firewall/defender has always been good enough for me behind a decent router. I haven't bothered with a firewall for a long time. Good antivirus software is the only thing I have running. I just cannot be bothered with irritations such as software firewalls.

Same, decent anti virus, router and generic windows firewall is all you need. Save your resources tbh... (not that you probably need to, but why bother otherwise?).

Looks like I'm in the same camp as the others then. Windows firewall, NOD32 AV anda router. Seems to have worked fine so far

The market for software firewall is very niche now imo - if you need highly customisable outbound program control, then go for it.

I stopped using ZoneAlarm about 2 years ago when finally upgrading to XP SP2 and haven't looked back. The built-in firewall and/or whatever is in the router should be sufficient for most people.
The only significant reason for getting that level of firewall now is, as Daz says, for outgoing program control. |
