Default External Storage

Was looking at how much space I had left on my hdd and realised that I am starting to run out, looked on my external hdd and realised that it's nearly full

So that's 2x500gb drives in the pc almost full and a 500gb external hdd almost full. Anyone got any recommendations for good external storage that isn't going to kill my bank balance?

How about one of those drive caddys which someone posted about recently. I don't think you'll find a cheaper option than HDDs these days.

I'm not sure what you find to actually store on these things? I'm assuming films and TV series? Do you actually watch them all? Or is it a case of keeping them for the sake of it?

I tend to keep mine to watch at some point, and if I've watched them, I then tend to keep them in case I ever want to watch them again. I really should start archiving them probably onto disk, as I'm probably going to have the same problem as Wossi in the future.

Ah, some of mine aren't so easy to find, so I keep those ones (Highlander the series for example). The only problem is that 50GB of episodes aren't so easy to archive properly.

I watch them and keep them for for the future. When you have 10 seasons of SG-1, 4 seasons of Atlantis and about 6 other tv series, watching them is time consuming, plus it took ages to get them all so may aswell keep them.

Tempted to make my own NAS, start off with 1x500gb drive and keep adding more to it.

Just bought another cheap server from Dell. *the bargain £117 C2D server*

Inserted 4x750gb hdd's. No raid needed for me. 2 drives will be network accessable, other 2 will be mirrors created nightly. Can't be bothered with raid on this machine.

Just going to be used as a media archive for various stuff. All in, the server has cost a whopping £380 for 3.25tb of hdd space, 2gb of ram, and a 1.8ghz c2d. Plus with the inbuilt gigabit I can also use it to take images of my OS hdd on a weekly basis nice and quickly.

It's ended now. Was only available for a few days.

Next replacement should be on Hotukdeals.com soon.
