Connecting the Wii to the internet....

When you are connecting the Wii to a wireless internet connection, do you need something to make it work?

I tryed to today with my brothers, put all the setting's into the wii and got to the connection test, but it came back with an error. Just wondering if there is anything else that he needs to get the internet to work on it? Or if there is something I am doing wrong.

Could be the router needs the ports opened to allow the Wii to connect to the internet, as it might use certain ports the router has blocked.

Will also depend on what wireless security options are set on the router - e.g. WEP or WPA security. I can't remember if the Wii supports WPA but even if it does that's sadly not a guarantee of success.

It does spport WPA as that is what is on our router and our Wii works fine

Thanks, How do you open the ports to allow access? Will have a look at the settings when I am there again.

I don't think it's a port thing, I didn't need to open any.

The Wii supports both, it's the DS that doesn't

Agreed - it's all over HTTP iirc (until in game anyway).

First thought would be MAC address access control, if you're sure you put the key in right (WEP ones are easy to mis-type).

Ooooppss forgot about this!

See I am not sure whether I put in the right key, as I was sure that those sorts of keys were given to you by the service provider, but they said they didn't get one, so we tried passwords they use for other things, and the one go to the next stage which was the test. Which didn't work.

Where would I go to check the MAC address access control?

The WEP or WPA key will something you probably set on the router yourself when you first set it up. You'll also need to know which of the kind of key it is too I expect.

Probably the password WEP/WPA key for the connection.

To check it double click on the wireless connection icon in the system try of a connected computer, then hit the view wireless networks button. This will tell you if the connection is secured and what type of encryption it is. Under windows it's most likely WPA.
