Could be the thermostat is on the way out - if so - buy a new one.
Or...heating element has cracked - gets hot - expands - breaks connection - cools - makes connection - get hot - expands.... etc... Buy a new one.

so it looks like a new one then
the good bit is that showers seem stupid cheap, bad bit is I need to find one that won't need any retiling |

Good luck with that...
We've broken 3 showers in 5 years *seriously hard water* and even though we are buying the same make and even the same model - the connections are in different positions. I've got quite good at changing showers. Under a hour including sorting the pipework out. If you do need to drill new holes for the mounting, get some proper tile drills - so much easier.

cheers, there are loads of tiles in that bathroom
only poss saving grace is that there is an identical one in another bathroom if needed I can swap them over and fit the new one in the other bathroom, this has loads less tiles |

Just to rule out the silly things. You're not using it while the washing machine is on, are you? Ours does that if the washing machine is on - as both of us have found out (on separate occasions ).
