PS2 experts needed.

Long story short. Bought a copy of GT4 for the PS2 (because I'm going to the Nurburgring later in the year and apparently GT4 is the best way to learn the track). I goto a "Game" store, hand over a tenner and take my pre-owned disc home.
It doesnt work.
I take it back the next day and exchange it for another pre-owned copy.
That doesn't work either.
So, out of curiosity I ask a friend if I can check the disc out on his PS2.....and it works???
His machine is an original PS2 whereas mine is a silver slimline model. Are there any known issues that could explain the above?
