This is a great messaging application which is cross platform. No faffing about having to search for your friends, you just install it and it searches your address book to see who's got it and is online. I just opened mine to find a friend from work on the list of buddies who I didn't even know had an iPhone!
It's like SMS/MMS with no cost/message. You just buy the app itself and that's it, the iPhone version is 59p and it's worth every penny. It's available for the iPhone and the Blackberry. More details here.

I've got it installed but rarely use it. It was useful for a brief chat with Feekles when I was in sunny Sweden a few weeks ago.
Also, Ping 2 has just been released and is currently free. |

Next time you go to Sweden, can you kidnap me and take me there too? :P

I'll see what I can do.
It's a fantastic country, one of the few places I don't mind visiting for work purposes. |

I agree. Went there last year (Kiruna) and the constant daylight was awesome. Sitting by a gorgeous waterfall at 2am and it being bright was an odd experience!

whats app pisses all over ping with it's addressbook integration though. if you're using it as an SMS replacement you want it to index people by phone number, not by a made up username you need to find out from them.
the makers of tweetie made a similar app called textie, but it had the same failing (imho) the much better thing about textie was that it sent as an SMS if you didn't have an app installed on the other end, or data transfer if they did, so effectivley replaced your SMS feature on your phone.
