Poor download speed, can I improve it?

On O2 here and sync at 17,828Kbps yet I can only download at a max of 1.2MB/s. Surely I should be hitting closer to 2MB/s? Is there anything I can do to tweak this?

Assume you have ADSL2 connection to sync at nearly 18mbit. You should be able to realise ~2MB/s with that speed but it does depend on O2 and what their network can provide, are you downloading at peak times and have you tested late at night? What are you using to test the download rate?

It'll be ADSL2+ rather than ADSL2.

With the way IP profiles work that sync rate should equate to about 15Mbit so almost 2Mb/s but not quite. About 1.8Mb/s is the most you can get. It might be worth dropping O2 an email and ask them to have a look - I was having a similar problem with my O2 connection and it turned out to be a fault that they got fixed.

I'm downloading from usenet at all different times of the day and only ever see 1.2MB/s. Even if I try all different types of interent speed test it awlays shows my connection speed at around 10Mbps, so almost half of what I'm actually syncing at. Might drop O2 a line.

I'm not a fan of those speed test sites but if yoiu're consistently seeing 10Mbit and getting 1.2Mb/s from Usenet then that does seem to imply that 10Mbit it is.

When O2 were looking into my fault they asked me to use this speed test which seems to be more accurate than others I've used.

Silly silly me. Had a problem with the wireless the other night so had to cable to the router instead. Guess what.....got full 1.8MB/s download speed. so it looks like the wireless is chewing up 600K/s? That seems and awful lot for what is a good connection to the router and WPA encryption doesn't it?

WPA is relatively CPU hungry, does WPA2 make any difference?

It could also be down to another near by wireless network being on a close channel. Grab something like netstumbler and see what other networks are broadcasting.
