Question Analogue reception anomaly

As you may be aware, I recently bought myself a lovely big 37" widescreen LCD telly.

We don't get freeview here and because I live in a flat rented by my company, Sky isn't a viable option so I'm pretty much stuck with analogue until I move.

I get a very grainy picture with analogue so I am running through two boosters but the picture, although watchable, is annoyingly poor.

The anomaly manifested itself today when I connected the analogue connection up to the old Alba 20" CRT jobby in the corner and got a perfect picture on every channel

Is this normal? Is it a case that the LCD telly doesn't give a good picture with analogue or does it need a stronger signal? or is there something wrong with my telly?

Stan

If the signal is shoddy then boosters can just amplify the noise and make the picture worse.

Exactly, you need to increase the signal to noise ratio, by using a booster you're increasing both the signal and the noise.

Most people don't believe it, but a good strong analogue signal will give you a picture that's miles better than any digital signal. Shame it's all getting turned off in a few years

I understand what you're saying but I don't think that's the problem.

If I use no booster, I get no picture at all on the LCD and a poor picture on the CRT.
If I use 1 booster, I get an unwatchable picture on the LCD and a not bad picture on the CRT.
If I use 2 boosters, I get a watchable but noisy picture on the LCD and a perfect picture on the CRT.

Perhaps I should try a third booster.

How does the resolution of your TV compare with the analogue broadcast resolution? Could it be that you're getting the same blurring effect that you do if you run a TFT at something other than native res?
