Default Windows XP Activation

Before you all throw stuff at me, I'm not a pirate. Although I do like booty, yarrr!

Anyway, my home PC has a genuine copy of XP Pro on.

My girlfriends laptop was ****ed beyond repair, it had Windows ME on, tons of spyware, hundreds of bloaty programs, kodak easyshare, hp deskjet crap etc etc. I tried saving her, but I had to resort to formatting in order to clean the laptop properly. However, she then informed me that she no longer had the ME disk to put back on. Not a bad thing actually, I hate ME.

So I installed XP off my disc and used my product code to install it.

Now obviously, it wants me to activate, but it isn't connected to the web, and I need to phone to get the ID etc. They will obviously say "this copy of xp is already in use, by a new one"

1.) We can't afford a new copy of XP.
2.) She's going to want to use the laptop for more than 30 days.

Is there a way to get around the activation? Naughty I know, but I'm sure there's a way.

If this is against BD rules, nuke the thread, I promise I won't mind.

They won't say it's in use. They will ask "Is this installed on another system?" - to which you will say "No" and they will then activate it for you

What he said, just say you've had to do a reinstall

If you want to stay legal, can you afford an OEM copy? I'm pretty sure Microsoft removed the requirement for buying it with a piece of hardware. If not, then I'm sure someone above will sort it.

In this case I don't agree with MS. You don't have to buy a printer per-pc do you? This legality really annoys me, ah well.

I think I understand where you come from Mark, being a Dev and all - but it isn't like he's building computers for people and giving them free copies of XP

What does 2 printers have to do with anything? The OS being installed isn't the same version as the one that was removed. Ergo, new license. If you want to upgrade your printer, you (usually) can't just take it apart and replace the innards.

Cant agree with you there Rob. You're licensed for one copy, and that's that. I just dont have a problem with people getting around it if they want to, if they own a legal copy regardless. Redmond can afford it
