Odd network cable issue
So for the past 5 years or so I've had my Xbox in the back room with a network cable plugged in. Its ran fine. It'll stream anything from my Mac Mini with its wifi connection upstairs. With our new HDTV I've decided the 360's new home is the back room. So I took the cable out the Xbox and plugged it in the 360. It struggled to play mp3's over the network. It struggled to display 4mb images as a slideshow. I must admit I find it a little odd that the older box performs better. The Xbox can stream a 1.3gb movie without issue. The 360 is struggling to even connect to Xbox Live! In fact I'm trying it now and it can't. I bet if I plugged the same cable into the old Xbox I could happily watch a dvd movie, I mean a 4gb dvd iso image without issue. Its crazy!

Viewing pictures on the Xbox can be slow sometimes if you're skipping ahead yourself - it tries to cache them and sometimes just stops for a couple of seconds. I read somewhere it was on a list to be sorted in a later dash update.
Never had a problem streaming vid's or mp3's though :/

I wasn't skipping ahead annoyingly. It took about 5 mins to load the first.

You using WMP11 or some other software? I know it sometimes takes a while to load if I choose anything higher than album (say, all songs in all albums by a particular artist).

I was using Connect 360 for OSX. I also tried using the MCE option and that was noticebly laggy. My MCE box has a network cable so it shouldn't be laggy. You could see it happen on the menu. Push up, and a few seconds later you'd see it go up. I've seen a MCE extender for testing bandwidth. I'm going to try and install that to test. I'm tempted by the wifi option but I bet that doesn't have the performance for HD content.

The MCE stuff on the 360 is very bloaty/laggy, at least it was when I've tried it, and my mate found the same. Fine on the PC, difficult to stomach on the 360. I now use TVersity, if you want an alternative on your MCE box. Can be fiddly with codecs but mostly ok.
