Very Happy
Sure it'll probably need more memory at some point, but hey, awesome for a freebie. To be racked in the garage out of the way PowerEdge 1950 server, pair of dual core Xeons (45nm ones), 2GB of RAM, 4 10,000RPM SAS disks, redundant power, DRAC and 3 year warranty.

Holy mother of god. I don't even want to know what that would cost to buy.
Dual Dual Core Penryn-based CPU, PERC RAID, Drac card, 4Hr service. On a server for home use. Fair point on the 2GB, though I dunno what you intend to run on it. Might want to put a DVD±RW drive in there I guess. Lucky, lucky, b*****d. You should have got me a free D830. I'm now going to hide in a corner and sulk. |

I've just bought one of those as a replacement ISA box!
Amount we spend on Dell stuff it's a shame I can't blag anything like that, but it's all done through our office in Holland so I can't do it.

Sorry guys, couldn't resist penis waving
The list price was scary for sure. It's Dell's end of year though and I had a good 25k to spend, plus they owed me a couple of servers after they shafted me in december (yes, there are actually two of those for free ) - long story short - ordered two servers in december, next day I get an email saying 'buy one server get one free'. Hmm. Cue me moaning loudly at account manager and him promising to make it up to me. I'd never buy this sort of thing myself but for free who would turn it down? And already having a rack with rack mount UPS and switch is just ace for me Not bothered about the DVDRW as I have that in the workstation anyway. Even if I have to buy memory for it later it's still a steal. I'm really like the cat who got the cream at the moment, Dee doesn't quite understand why though

What are you going to use it for?

I'm impressed by the firm you work for, ours would use the freebie one, not give it away!

It'll either straight replace my current server box (Linux host doing VPN, file hosting, MDA and some other bits, Windows Server guest in vmware doing AD, exchange and media sharing to the 360), or I'll whack ESX on there and move the windows guest to it and virtualise another linux guest to replace what my current install does. In either case my current server box will become our new workstation (Dee's gonna start needing a lot more oomph for her photo stuff so this is good for her too), and my current workstation (the shuttle) will be broken down into bits and then who knows what.
[edit]Feek - to quote my gaffer 'the last thing we need is more bloody servers, you can 'av 'em'. Sometime soon we'll be looking at a pretty large blade deployment and a new SAN to back it up, so I appreciate the sentiment!

I might get my hands on a G3 DL380 which I'll populate with as many processors and as much RAM as I can but it won't compare as it's old, Compaq and cream coloured, not new, HP and black.

I, like Davey, now officially hate you.
Though I do have to reluctantly give you credit for the whole Europc thing. |
