ubuntu gone crazy
you'll have to bare with of as I'm posting from my phone.
tried to start the laptop this morning but it's not working. it starts to boot normally but then stops at /etc/rc.local fail. the screen them flashes 3 times and I end up in a place to set up my graphics card as I'm in low graphics mode. once I set tgat it still drops back to 800 x 600 and them loads the desktop. my mouse pad doesn't york so I have to use a usb mouse. wireless network doesn't work either. not sure where to in from here. seems like I need to reconfigure all my hardware.

Hard disk problem or filesystem corruption I'd guess (in order of probability). /etc/rc.local doesn't contain anything but comments (unless you've edited it yourself).
Now would be a good time to back up anything you haven't already. |

Running off the live CD now and everything seems to be working fine. Might just backup anything I want to keep and do a fresh install again.

Nvidia or ATI graphics card, do you know? Usually when that has happened to me its because I've done one of their updates and a new kernel (core part of an OS) has been released. Once you've done that the graphics card drivers need to be re configured for it.
Boot your system up off hard disk and try: sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-glx If it's an nvidia card anyway. Can't remember what the ati graphics one is called, try "aptitude search fglrx" and looking for the package with an "i" at the start of the line, then do sudo dpkg-reconfigure packagename Another alternative: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Tried that this morning but without any joy. Main problem I've had today is that the Ubuntu forums have been down so any chance of searching for a solution has been pretty hard. Maybe loads of other people have had the same problem and it's brought their forum server to a halt. Anyhow, I ended up doing a fresh install as all my files are kept on a separate partition so it wasn't a major problem I'll look into the solution later on so next time it happens I know what to do

Good point - hadn't thought of that one. I have to do that on my Gentoo box as well.
The rc.local error is unconnected but it may well (hopefully) also be unimportant. |
