I don't want to have to buy a new soundcard but I suspect it's finally time that I have to (the old one is about 10 years old so it's had a good run).

Any ideas?
If you do end up buying a new sound card stay the hell away from creative..i spent 60 quid on a sound card last year and its now worth a **** in vista till crative sort out drivers that make all the options work

I got a base performance score of 4.5:

CPU 4.9, Memory 4.5, Graphics 5.9, Gaming 5.9, Hard disk 5.2

Surprised at the memory score, although i only have 1gig it is relatively quick stuff, Geil 6400.

Still won't let me play STALKER though .

EDIT

Well i sort of can now, was completely unplayable on XP but on Vista if i turn in game performance to low and set the ATI drivers to high performance i can just about play it. Takes an age to load and quit and jerks all over the place still though .

I'm the same as Haly. Well except this is my laptop that i was going on and on about a few months ago before i bought it.

Processor 4.9
Memory 4.5
Graphics 3.7
Gaming graphics 3.4
Primary 4.7

Graphics are Geforce GO 7400, good old vista drivers are actually completely impossible to get for this go series for some reason. Not bad for a 12" lappy though. Definately does the job!

I think i've heard the memory perfomance is only based on how much you have, not how fast it is.

That's what they say, but it isn't clear really.

That seems likely, otherwise there'd be a difference between 1GB of PC3200 and 1GB of PC6400.

(my 3-year-old system is using Corsair XMS PC3200 and it scored 4.5, same as with PC6400)

Ah k, makes sense but is a little silly.

Is it the same with H/D's then? As in speed doesn't matter just how much storage you have.

I imagine it's a small factor (a 10GB drive isnt very useful these days), but it's mostly based on memory bandwidth. My 2 drive stripe scores highly, where my laptop drive not so good (7200rpm it may be but it's still a laptop drive, suffers on seek time traditionally).

Total memory isn't the ultimate factor in the memory score, I have 3Gb fitted of what I thought was reasonably fast RAM but I don't have a stunningly good memory score, I think it's about 4.8 at stock speeds. Overclocking the PC did increase that but I'm back at defaults now.

I got mine installed the other day and tested it before and after overclocking and got exactly the same scores both times

Can't remember offhand what all the scores were but my overall was 4.6 - which was my memory (2Gb of PC8000 -thought that would do better).

CPU was predictably high - I think it was 5.3, as was my graphics at 5.9.

HDD was a bit low as well iirc - there's just a bog standard 7200 rpm SATA in there atm but will be replaced at some point by striped Raptors (might even consider an SSD drive for the O/S in the future )

Haven't had a chance to have a proper play yet due to packing and moving. Will try to tweak things and improve on my scores once I'm settled.
