Lord of the Rings

I know it's been around for ages, but Fellowship of the Ring was on tonight on C4.

it's always been a series of films that I never thought would capture my interest. I've heard how hard Tolkien can be to 'get into'.

But, while doing other stuff, I had it on in the background. Well, that was the plan, but I actually had it on in the foreground most of the time.

Problem is, having kind of watched it, I now want to watch it properly (I missed the first 15 minutes while recording due to a PC crash). I also want to see the other two. I suspect C4 is going to show them over the next two weeks.

How did this happen?

Not my favourite films... They're ok, but they just didn't hang together well enough for me. The books are better, as is the BBC Radio adaption.

Have to say I side with Randal on the LoTR trilogy.

Other half enjoyed them though which is why we have the extra special extended dvd's with wizzy figurines.

I didn't actually realise it was on this weekend and I've just watched all 3 extended versions this week since I hadn't seen them for ages

There are quite a few changes I would have made in favour of the books but overall I think they're very good movies

Whilst it was quite good, I don't think it's a movie I'd own on DVD. Though saying that it's been a while since I saw them it might be quite fun to see them again.

The books are FAR superior but it's still a series of films I enjoy sitting down to once a year with a few bottles of wine

Given my lack of reading interest (the last time I read a book all the way through was probably at Uni), I think dealing with the books would be beyond me. Besides, at my reading rate it'd probably take a year to get through them and do them justice. I just don't have the patience for that.

I'll just watch the films and enjoy them.

I noticed Play have the entire trilogy of films (6 DVDs) for £15.

I'd say definitely pick them up for that price Mark

I thoroughly enjoyed them and thought they were quite a good translation of the books (given how epic the books are) although they did miss a lot out and there were seven endings

I own them on DVD (not extended, which I still haven't seen

) but they've been purloined by my brother at the moment....

I love the films as much as the books, and would gladly have sat through six three-hour films - one for each of the actual books (Fellowship, Towers and King are all split into two parts). Would have been nice to have had Tom Bombadil, Barrow Wights, and the Scouring of the Shire from the end, but unfortunately it probably would have alienated moviegoers. I think they did really well to get as much in as they did. Frankly, could it have been done better, given the wealth of material and the restrictions on the length of the films? Possibly, but not by much.

I watch all three extended editions at least once a year. They really are impressive films.

I could never get into the books so I havent read any of them. The films however are simply stunning. I love them for what they are, incredible stories, amazing effects, beautiful films. I think films like this and Gladiator will be hard to better.
