Partitioning for Linux

Right so - I am currently setting up my Ubuntu install but got to the partitioning bit and basically can't remember the 'best' way to do it.

any tips??

i've started with a 70gb section of space...how would you break it down?
(i'm using Ubuntu 7.1)

There are schools of thought on this one. For a main workstation I'd pretty much just restricted it to:

1 partition for swap
1 partition for /
and then 1 partition for /home

That way should you need to re-install your OS your docs and user settings are all safe.

yeah i've currently got 9gb for the swap...

but then i can't see anything like root or home in the remaining options like i have had in other distros...
the options are -
ext2
ext3
reiserfs
jfs
xfs
fat16
fat32

Now, i've never seen reiserfs, jfs and xfs before so i'm not sure if they're other references to root and home?

Just use plain ol' ext3 unless you have a good reason to do otherwise.

9GB swap? That's rather large. 2GB should be more than enough.

My main Linux box has 2GB RAM and rarely touches the swap (the one in the DC does swap a fair bit but there's a reason for that).

its been sat on 15% - Detecting File systems for ages!! ?

any ideas on how i can check its 'ok'
