Monitor Samsung or Dell 24''
Is the Samsung SM-245B 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor a S-PVA panel or a TN one ?
Also I was going to buy the Dell 24'' 2507 until I read articles complaining about ghosting issues. And at over £420 worth of momitor I do not expext any issues. Also I notice that some suppliers were selling the older 2405WFP above RRP ! Can you blame them, as it seems to be the monitor to have, and the best Dell have made to date, even though it is an out going produst. So which leads me to the Samsung SM-245B 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor. Is this a good second choice in place of the Dell 2405WFP ? many thanks

Yes.. I think for value for money, you can't go wrong with the Samsung 254B at the moment. They were under £300 a few months back so their popularity has obviously increased the price. The Samsung uses the TN Panel.
As for the Dell, I'm not familair with the 2507.. Do you mean the 2407-HC. Yes, there have been reported issues of Ghosting which has put a lot of people off, yet CPC rated this screen as one of the best TFT they had seen. The Dell uses the S-PVA panel. Review here I bought the A04 revision just before the went out of stock and although I paid £100 more than the Samsung, I'm very happy with the choice I made. That said, I don't think you'll be disappointed with any 24" model as they run with a native res of 1920p x 1200p. However, you'll need a decent graphics card to be running at those heights so if you don't intend to spend the money elsewhere, I'd settle for a decent 20".

Everyone on ocuk seems to be going bananas over the ocuk branded monitor. There were rumours that it used the panel from a popular screen, might even be the dell. Best to email Badass and check as he will know.
The TN panels do not have great viewing angles. Since most people look straight at the screen this is less of an issue. Even with these "ghosting" issues with the Dell HC, I seriously doubt that its at a level where a non-professional gamer would notice. However I am typing looking at the dell 24" next to my AG-Neovo 19" and the only immediate difference is the dell is a lot brighter. Tyson, you have to watch it with the 8800 series as they are messing around with the revisions. The 8800 series is actually getting on a bit now and the 9800's are due Feb/Mar. Granted the price will make you cry, but we have enjoyed a very long lifetime on the 8800's. Hell even my old X1900XTX isn't that bad at 1900*1200, but that is clocked to silly levels. |

I agree with Zirax, the 8800 has seen a very good innings. The fact that the GTX has remained top of the pack for almost a year now is amazing and prooves Nvidia's dominance in the graphics card market. This is by far the the longest card I've had and it still going strong. Only Crysis struggles. By comparison, the 7800GTX I bought was replaced by the 7900GTX within months.
With no competition from AMD/ATI, Nvidia obviously feel comfortable leaving this card at the top whilst they concentrate on their next gen card. The gap between Nvidia and ATI cards will widen creating more trouble for AMD. Tyson, the way you were asking was as if the purchase was imminent so I didn't want you going out buying a new 24" monitor only to be disapointed by it's performance. If I were you, I would get that system upto date first, and get a new monitor at a later date. The good thing about a new card on the way is that the price of existing top end cards will start to fall. In a few months, you'll be able to pick up an 8800GTX for under £200.

Hi,
I totally agree with Zirax as well Huddy. I think I will get the monitor last. I was just sizing up which one to get and then start shopping around for a deal. I was hopping if the 9000 range of new cards were going to be expensive then I would get a second hand 8800 GT or GTX till the 9000 came down in price. Zirax, I will e mail Badass on the OC 24'' flat panel, see what he has to say about it. many thanks guys PS. Zirax I must pop over to see that dell monitor

Another vote for the 8800GTX. I bought one last March and it's still going great guns (except for Crysis as Huddy said).
I bought a 2407WFP-HC Dell in October and it's a brilliant monitor. I've not had any issues with ghosting at all. |

I am not sure about the Dell, due to the press / PC mag articles. Though I hope the S-PAV panel should be much better than the TN !

As far as I know, all the newer models are fine.
Without a new revision, the source of the problem suggests drivers.
