Default Online banking card reader

Quite cool but awkward this.

Just got a chip and pin card reader thing (looks like a small calculator) from Nationwide. The idea is that for certain transactions online and on internet banking, you have to put you card in the reader, which generates a code. This is then used to validate the transaction.

First I've heard of this and it'll be a pain if I'm not at home and want to move money around, but at least it's extra protection.

Intelligent Finance are using a mobile phone based system, I think because they are Internet based they are confident that all their users have a mobile. Its good they offer an added layer of security though

I've got a IF account as well. I move a standing order of money out of my main current account that my wages go into an IF one that my bills get paid from.

I got screwed the other day because I wanted to change something but they had my old mobile number. Always a good excuse to listen to a girls sexy Edinbrough accent though

Having been frauded for the second time today (why on earth would I want a Medion PC) I fully support security initiatives, so long as they don't break my account consolidation (which, ironically, is done by Egg - with whom both fraud events also happened).

PS - they declined the transactions this time - dormant card, so it was obvious.

Leon's had one of these for a while with Barclays. Seems to work quite well.

Got one with Natwest, seems fine now I got setup with a card that works with it. Heard Nationwide are doing it too but not got a reader yet myself, my Grandad's had one for months.

I carry that calculator thing with me on holiday - it's a pain when I'm at work though and I need to do some urgent things. It's great for security and everything, but they won't send you a second one (well Barclays won't).

I've got one from Natwest, and I quite like it. You dont have to use it for all transactions, but things like adding/removing payee's, setting up/cancelling standing orders etc. Only once have I been inconvenienced by it and I'll live with that for the extra security it brings
