I was in Newport (rough as a badgers *rse, clart) on my Boxercise course and the instructor was from central London and couldn't believe how many sirens were going off. We heard about 3 cars heading off in one direction at one point followed by another one heading in the opposite direction a few minutes later. He reckoned the 2nd car had said 'This is going to be a long one lads - I'll pop back to the station and put the kettle on.'

There's 3 sorts, every time you hit the horn it changes. It starts off WOOOWOOOWOOOWOOOWOOOOO then it's neeeenaaaaawneeeeeenaaaaaaaawneeeeenaaaaaaaaaw, then it's some foreign sounding stuff that generally gets skipped through to more WOOOWOOOWOOOOWOOOWOOOOO!
