I quite enjoyed Shoot Em 'Up, as did Dym when we watched it.
Perfect for 'switch your brain off, have a laugh' action. Totally implausible but it never was meant to be anyway.

O Brother, Where Art Thou

Starring
  • George Clooney
  • John Turturro
  • Tim Blake Nelson
  • John Goodman
Loose adaptation of The Odyssey

8/10 It's a very very loose translation of The Odyssey but that's a good point, it's a great film. It's weird, it's clever, it's got good music and it's surreal, it must be a Coen Brothers film.

I actually quite enjoyed it though.
Giamatti was pretty appalling in Shoot 'Em Up I thought so I was figuring on 2 points for Monica Bellucci and 1 point for the carrot. It seems I can only suspend disbelief so far in films and believing the neurotic, slightly tubby bloke from Sideways is a cold blooded hitman was a step too far.

Brilliant film, nice to see a true story out there. Only one massively bad thing about it... was Daniel Craigs accent! When he wasn't shouting he was superb.

But.

It was Daniel Craig.

And he was working out in the evening after work for James Bond too.

So we'll let him off.

Go see though - top notch!

8.5/10

Would deserve a 9 but his accent... well yeh As above (oh and this is on my comparison to other war films - Schindlers List being at the top with 9.8 )
I concur whole heartedly I might be biased though

I love this film so much, so many brilliant lines in it. It's one of my favourite comedies of all time and its soundtrack is amazing.

It's not as good as the original version, Shaving Ryans Privates.

The thing about Shoot Em up is that it absolutely nails it's target audience but at the expense of everybody else. It's action film pornography - hell, I even felt a bit dirty for enjoying some of it.
Yeah, it's single layered, nonsense but at the same time I kind of admire the singlemindedness of it and there's quite a lot of invention and style in the action sequences too.

Se7en

Starring
  • Brad Pitt
  • Morgan Freeman
  • Gywneth Paltrow
  • R. Lee Ermey
Thriller

8/10 It's a really good film although like The Usual Suspects it is a film that is best on the first watch I feel, the story seems more taut although repeated viewings do reveal the small details better like the colour hues according to the mood of the film. Also rather like The Usual Suspects I believe you are legally allowed, no sorry obligated, to kill anyone who ruins the story for you because it just isn't the same once you know although the acting is great throughout.

I just watched Heat 2 nights ago, it's amazing. One of the best crime movies ever for my money.

Se7en is also outstandingly good and brilliantly acted by the best actor on the planet, Morgan Freeman. The Usual Suspects is good, but you can see the ending coming a mile off.
