They can stop you driving the car if they deem it unsafe. Unfortunately that means you've got to trailer it somewhere.

Say the tow truck costs £100, maybe £200 in work (because you always get rip-off rates with welding), weigh up if it's worth it.

Hmmmm i was in no position to argue obviously, but i said can't i take it home and leave it on the drive and he flat out said no thats still breaking the law, it can only be driven to a pre booked garage appointment or something else, which leads to proper hassle. Thing is i don't have a drive in Edinburgh, but i was gonna take it down to a "free to park" road where it would be left alone whilst i get something sorted out, as it stands i told him fine. But its staying in you're carpark since i can't move it!

Hmmm,

Quote:
Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate
Form VT30 – Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate. A red form with minor details of your car, the name of tester and address of test station. This form lists the items your car failed to pass.
A Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate means one or more items have failed to meet the minimum legal requirements for a pass. The item(s) will be listed on the form. If you intend to use your car on the roads, the item(s) will need to be replaced/repaired urgently. It may be possible to arrange replacement/repair of failed item(s) at the test station premises, to enable your car to achieve an MOT test pass Certificate before you drive the car away.
However, if you intend to drive your car away from the test station with a Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate, there are some stipulations. It is illegal to drive a car of MOT-testable age that does not have a current MOT test certificate on public roads, with the exception of driving it away to a place of repair, which may include your home residence. From there you may be permitted to drive to a pre-booked place of repair, and to a pre-booked MOT test station.
It is not illegal to sell a car with a Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate, however, a buyer may be breaking the law by driving it away, unless the stipulations above are satisfied. Even then it is not guaranteed that you will not be prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy car, and your insurance may be invalidated.

Loads of other sources for this. Can't find the official vosa one though (its hidden in their website). I did find it for my mr2 just incase it failed.

As Johnny has said, if it is in a really bad way then it still can be stopped by the police. Also agree in that you need to weigh up what its worth.

edit:- actually says the above on the failure sheet.

Yeah to be fair i've got nowhere to put it, its just a piss take its miles away so getting there is annoying and i had to get home without it. I don't think its unsafe, because to be fair it wasn't even an advisory on the last MOT? Now suddenly nearside is an advisory and offside is fail. I don't want to argue because i want it fixed (i mean it's structural) but i think they're being a little over zealous... About to start phoning around for welding now, i know i've about to be financially bum raped and really cba, how do you get quotes on something they can't see? I might go grab the car and drive it to a garage near-ish-by and see what they've got quote wise... Arse.

I can haz MOT

Its only now I realise just how much I missed driving it over the winter months when it was in bits. The Focus you can throw around, but it doesn't talk back to you through the car.

Off the roundabout, 2nd gear foot to the floor. As the revs grew, so did my grin. As I dropped it into 3rd, my grin was definitely extending from one side of the car to the other. The guy in the Mondeo didn't look impressed though as he was left standing when mine came on cam.

edit:- I'll post some pics tomorrow of the work.
