Default Speed limit to be reduced

Apparently, the government want to slow us down by imposing a 50mph speed limit on most of the rural roads in the country.

Your thoughts?

Great idea

Seriously, speed is lethal. It will save so many lives, it will stop kiddies being slaughtered in the streets. All those innocent 2 year olds sneaking along country lanes will now be much safer.

I suppose, it might bring in some money too, you never know. But I'm sure that's just an innocent side effect, definately not the main objective.

As far as I can gather from other forums, they intend to use average speed cameras which take your average speed over a distance of as much as 6 miles.

@ iCraig. It has been suggested elsewhere that this may be a money making scheme for the government but we all know they would never be so cynical - don't we? After all, it's not as if they have a track record for such things.

That's all Speed Cameras are, money makers. They are behind a lot of accidents where people don't see them, slam on their brakes and cause a crash. It's a nightmare.

Remember on Top Gear around 2 years ago, the area with the safest roads over a period of 12 months was the North East where no new camera's had been added?

I'm all for it, assuming that reducing the speed limit can somehow, magically improve the standard of people's driving.

Unfortunately, that's just not the case...
