I've never had the flu but I've been told by people who have, that all the people going "I had flu but it was just like a cold tbh" just had a cold. If you actually get the flu, swine or otherwise, you know about it.
Hopefully I'll never have to back that up with experience, I hate being bed ridden.

I've only had the flu in my memory twice... once when I was a kid and once when I was joining up the bobby. I could barely crawl to the toilet for a wee let alone anywhere else. I was completely disillusioned too, was calling out the most random things ever and had absolutely no idea what on Earth was going on. Everything... everything in my whole body hurt. Was the weirdest thing ever and horrible. Colds are skank and annoying as you end up super sleepy from bunged up nose and thus inability to sleep... but this, along with skanky general feeling to me... is not flu! Just as a comparison to what I had in my past though |

A workmate of mine had it and said the pain in his legs was unbearable, couldn't get out of bed for two days. He said it didn't last as long as a cold but was a lot more intense (and really nothing like a cold).
Since that I've avoided him carefully.

The flu is truly horrific and I hope I have nothing like it whatsoever, ever, ever again!! I was aching so badly in my arms and legs, comparable in pain to torn muscles- I was freezing cold despite sweating and being bright red, I had a genuinely horrible pain in my chest/throat every time I coughed - strong enough to wake me from deep slumber and it was generally OWWWWWW OWWWWWWWWWWWW for 5 days, and 2/3 days before I was back to normal again. A horrendous experience which you cannot mistake for anything like a cold

It's not always that clear cut, but yes it's generally much more severe than a cold.
