That was my thing Feek.....it's just a "what if" scenario that I could really do without at work. OK, I'd have my current iMac as backup but I'm really not sure it's worth the possible hassle.

Doesn't matter. By definition, your Leopard install can't be licensed because it's not used on an Apple-branded computer so therefore the Snow Leopard install can't be licensed either because it's not a) used to upgrade a licensed Leopard installation and b) it's not being installed on an Apple-branded computer.

I really can't remember with the original, it was around 18 months ago that I did it and I was only just learning about the system so I simply followed the steps. For my Dell Mini-9 hack, I used the Leopard retail DVD I'd bought and it was effectively a vanilla install. I know it wasn't licensed but I felt (as I'm sure you do) that it's not such a big issue because I'd paid for the operating system.

Whether we feel justified doing it or not, the software quite simply isn't being used according to the terms of the license by installing on non Apple-branded hardware. That may or may not make it illegal and as you say, there's a big cloud about that but you can't argue that the software is licensed.

I really don't have a problem with hackintoshes, I've built and run two of them and each time I've gone on to buy the nearest equivalent Apple kit afterwards. That's not down to the limitation of the systems I had, but just that I prefer the Apple kit to what I had.

This is a great guide and it looks as though it really works well

Ta

Just to clarify, I'm not saying that that what I've done is licensed anyway. I was just pointing out to Mark that it's not necessarily unlicensed. I guess the only way it'll ever get sorted out is if there is some form of legal case and a judgement is made.

I'm a Mac Fanboi anyway, so I don't mind paying for the disks rather than downloading anyway. Especially as they are so cheap.

Not to worry though. I've got an SL Upgrade DVD and an Apple-branded computer, but no Leopard (I'm on Tiger and can't justify the upgrade pack price).

I'd maybe like to give this a go on my dell mini, but i went and bought a poulsbo netbook so everything is impossiblly more difficult when it comes to fiddling around It was enough trouble getting the ubuntu 9.10 running smooth. Windows is still really finicky about video playback and they have licensed drivers technically! Hmmmm
